As the Thessaloniki Intl. Documentary Festival prepares to host its 27th edition, which runs March 6 – 16, festival director Orestis Andreadakis sees no shortage of threats to truth, freedom and the values on which the democratic order is based. “Four months have passed since the [Thessaloniki Intl. Film Festival], but it seems like we’re already living in a completely different world — unfortunately, not a better one,” Andreadakis tells Variety.
Likening the times to “a historical documentary about the 1930s, screened backwards,” he describes world events as “an educational documentary that taught us nothing. It is a testimony for the horror of fascism and totalitarianism that it seems we have forgotten,” he continues. “It is a film record of a horrific historical reality that some are trying to repeat in the worst possible way.”
This year’s festival begins hardly a fortnight after Russia’s war in Ukraine marked its three-year anniversary, and as a tenuous...

For some, family is everything. If you cross them in any way, there will be hell to pay. It is the nature of things, especially when your family wields power like a sword waiting to slice dissenters in twain. Today, Paramount+ is ready to give Guy Ritchie fans a taste of the filmmaker’s next star-studded series, Mobland, starring Tom Hardy, Pierce Brosman, and Helen Mirren. Paramount’s MobLand trailer is an explosive look at what happens when the wrong people think they can change the pecking order of a well-oiled criminal empire. Good luck with that, friend.
MobLand debuts on Paramount+ on March 30. It centers around two warring families based in London whose enterprises stretch across the globe and the fiercely loyal “fixer” charged with protecting one of them at all costs.

“1923” has returned.
Taylor Sheridan’s “Yellowstone” prequel series, which followed “1883,” first premiered back in December 2022. By comparison, that was around when “Avatar: The Way of Water” hit theaters. That feels like an eon ago, right? But the point is: it’s back and we are very excited.
But if you have never watched “1923” or if it’s been a while, let us help refresh things with a recap of the cast and characters from the series. Ready to head back to the ranch?

Since the fall of the Berlin Wall in November of 1989, James Bond has struggled with his own relevance. "Licence to Kill" was released that same year, but it proved to be the last James Bond movie for six years. Eon Productions scrambled to came out with "GoldenEye" in 1995, starring Pierce Brosnan, the best James Bond. "GoldenEye" featured a scene wherein M (Judi Dench) told 007 right to his face that he was a remnant of an earlier time, and the bad guys were merely ex-Soviets who tried to keep the Cold War going as best they could. Energy for the war, "GoldenEye" pointed out, had waned.
Brosnan starred in four films as James Bond, but he ran into another relevancy problem after the events of September 11, 2001. During the George W. Bush administration, wars began anew, and Bond's slick, lighthearted spy shenanigans no longer seemed relevant. Eon Productions attempt to adapt with...

The title of this movie is the two-word answer to a most unexpected question. Namely: “What do you get if you cross American Sniper, The Last Of Us, Stranger Things, Aliens and Love Actually?” Writer Zach Dean appears unashamed of his influences on this former Black List spec script, and director Scott Derrickson has much fun with them, serving up a frothy B-pic stew. By the time we reach the wink-at-the-audience montage that depicts Miles ‘Whiplash’ Teller and The Queen’s Gambit’s Anya Taylor-Joy bonding over drumming and chess, there is no doubt left that The Gorge can’t, and shouldn’t, be taken too seriously.
The set-up is a doozy. Teller and Taylor-Joy are sexy-but-damaged elite operatives whisked to a super-remote top-secret location by Sigourney Weaver, guest-starring as the token untrustworthy boss-person. Their year-long mission? To stand sentinel over an eerie chasm which may or may not be “the door to Hell”. Only,...

Back in 1976, Rosemary’s Baby and The Stepford Wives author Ira Levin brought the world a conspiracy novel called The Boys from Brazil – and since Levin’s works had previously proven to be the makings of successful film adaptations, it’s no surprise that The Boys from Brazil was quickly turned into a movie. Released in 1978, that feature adaptation of the novel was directed by Franklin J. Schaffner from a screenplay by Heywood Gould and starred Gregory Peck, Laurence Olivier (who received an Oscar nomination for his performance), Steve Guttenberg, and James Mason. That film isn’t quite as popular as Rosemary’s Baby or The Stepford Wives, but it has a strong following – and now Deadline reports that the Netflix streaming service is set to build on that following with a series adaptation of Levin’s novel.

Jeremy Strong is set to lead a series adaptation of the Ira Levin novel “The Boys From Brazil” at Netflix, Variety has confirmed.
The project hails from Peter Morgan, the creator of the critically-acclaimed Netflix series “The Crown.” Morgan is writing the adaptation and will executive produce along with Suzanne Mackie of Orchid Pictures.
Reps for Netflix declined to comment.
Morgan revealed he was working on a series take on “The Boys From Brazil” in an interview with Variety in 2024. The novel was originally published in 1976 and was subsequently turned into a film starring Gregory Peck and Laurence Olivier in 1978.
In the novel, Nazi hunter Yakov Liebermann receives a tip that the notorious Dr. Josef Mengele is alive and living under an assumed name in Brazil. Liebermann travels to the South American country to track down the so called “Angel of Death,” only to discover a sinister conspiracy at work.

While the vampire Selene is often Underworlds main protagonist, Michael Sheens Lucian is a compelling and formidable character who is severely underrated. In the dark urban fantasy franchise, which pits vampires against werewolves, Sheen appeared in Underworld (2003) and Underworld: Rise of the Lycans (2009). Despite their thrilling high-octane fight sequences and impressive special effects, neither movie was a hit with critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, Underworld holds a score of 31%, with Rise of the Lycans at 30%. Even so, Sheen has never been accused of phoning in a performance, and his portrayal of Lucian is no exception.
Sheens TV and film career has given him an eclectic variety of roles to work with. His performances in acclaimed films such as The Queen and Frost/Nixon were lauded by critics, as was his role as Dr. William Masters in the TV series Masters of Sex. In recent years, many know him as the angel Aziraphale from Good Omens,...

At 86, Ridley Scott is on the cusp of releasing one of the biggest films of his career — “Gladiator II” — and already has at least two additional projects lined up for 2025, a reteam with Paul Mescal and a Bee Gees biopic. With no signs of slowing down.
He’s not the only Hollywood veteran who’s still making movies: Martin Scorsese, who turned 82 this year, made one of the best films of his career with “Killers of the Flower Moon” while Clint Eastwood (94) has what might be his final film, “Juror #2” in theaters now.

Prince Harry had yet another appearance without his wife, Meghan Markle, or his children, Prince Archie or Princess Lilibet, in attendance.
He has recently traveled the world solo, while Meghan has stayed home doing her own thing closer to her kids. It seems that Prince Harry is continuing alone.
Prince Harry and Meghan spent Valentine’s Day together while working for their Invictus Games charity, but Prince Harry worked alone at a new event for the same charity.
Meghan has tried several ways to launch her lifestyle brand, American Riviera Orchard, but to no avail. The royal couple needs to generate income somehow, and this new solo traveling may be it.
Prince Harry and Meghan may be trying to rebrand themselves as single entities rather than as a couple since their “couple” brand of Harry and Meghan isn’t working well for them.

White Bird, a follow-up to 2017's Wonder, has set a digital release date. Directed by Marc Forster, the film expands the Wonder universe, which grossed $315 million globally. While Wonder focused on Auggie Pullman's challenges with Treacher Collins syndrome in a middle school setting, White Bird shifts to a historical narrative centered on Auggie's bully, Julian (played by Bryce Gheisar), who visits his grandmother (Helen Mirren) in France following his expulsion from school and learns of her survival story during the Nazi occupation of France in World War II.
After a limited theatrical run earlier this month, the digital release on VOD offers White Bird a renewed opportunity to connect with home audiences. According to Collider, the movie will be available at home starting on November 1. Viewers will be able to either rent or buy the movie, which is based on the novel by Wonder author R.J. Palacio.

Nick Cutter writes some of the scariest, goriest horror novels around, yet the Canadian author is very mild-mannered. While firing up our Zoom conversation to discuss his new book, “The Queen,” I told Cutter I was riveted by the story, but my wife could only make it halfway through the galley, as the vivid descriptions of body horror and insects made her stomach churn.
“Oh, she wouldn’t be the first one and she won’t be the last,” he says with a gentle laugh. “Not only with that one but probably some of the other Cutter books.”
Cutter is the pen name of Craig Davidson, who also writes under his government name and as Patrick Lestewka. He notes that the Cutter persona speaks to “the horror that I grew up on”: Stephen King, Clive Barker and Dean Koontz, of course, but more specifically “men and women in the drugstore spinning rack.

Image Source: Amazon Academy Award winner Dame Helen Mirren is renowned for her dramatic roles, particularly her Oscar-winning performance in 2006’s The Queen. However, her action-packed turn in 2010’s Red marked a turning point in her career, paving the way for future action films like Hobbs & Shaw. In Red, Mirren plays Victoria Winslow, a retired MI6 assassin with a secret life. The film’s success has endured, finding a new following over a decade later. Many admire Mirren’s performance, and upon the film’s release, she shared her inspiration behind the character’s style and look – none other than Martha Stewart. Mikey Madison is the current Best Actress Oscar frontrunner for her heartbreaking performance in the title role of Sean Baker‘s “Anora.” Her likeliest competitors are two past Oscar winners — Nicole Kidman, 57, for “Babygirl” and Angelina Jolie, 49, for “Maria” — plus six-time nominee Amy Adams, 50, for “Nightbitch” and Karla Sofia Gascon, 52, for “Emilia Pérez.”
At age 25, Madison has one advantage over her main rivals for the award: her youth. Of the 97 winners of this race, almost one-third (32) were in their 20s.
Among those ingenues to take to the stage to collect this coveted prize was Emma Stone, who was 28 when she won for “La La Land” in 2017. Stone was 35 when she picked up a bookend Oscar earlier this year for “Poor Things,” which made her the 35th Best Actress winner in her thirties.

Andy Muschietti's mega-blockbuster adaptation of "It" kicked off a new boom of Stephen King adaptations when it hit theaters in 2017, but if we were in a boom, is it safe to say we've now hit a bust? There are still tons of new King adaptations coming (I'm excited to see Osgood Perkins' take on "The Monkey" and Bryan Fuller's horned-up "Christine" update), but the massive hits have slowed down (remember "Firestarter?"), and one major adaptation, Warner Bros' "'Salem's Lot," is only now coming out after years of sitting on the shelf.
The works of Stephen King will always continue to be rich and entertaining, whether they're dominating the pop cultural zeitgeist or not. But if one title exemplifies the fickleness of the recent King adaptation boom, it's "Castle Rock," a wonderfully complicated, delightfully mysterious King-adjacent series that unceremoniously died on the vine at Hulu despite delivering two great seasons of television.

Robert Downey Jr. could be about to join an exclusive actors club by becoming just the fourth person to win both an Oscar and an Emmy for acting in the same calendar year.
Downey Jr. won Best Supporting Actor at this year’s Oscars for his portrayal of Lewis Strauss in “Oppenheimer.” That Christopher Nolan biopic, which also won Best Picture, followed Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer and depicted the scientist’s creation, and later guilt, of the atomic bomb. Downey Jr’s Strauss was a politician who was once an ally of Oppenheimer only to become his rival. Downey Jr’s portrayal of Strauss, the film’s villain, made him the obvious choice for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar and that remained throughout awards season. He won the BAFTA, Critics Choice, Golden Globe, and SAG awards before he eventually won the Academy Award, beating fellow Oscar nominees Sterling K. Brown...

The Crown, which wrapped up its six-season run on Netflix at the end of last year, has been subject of a slew of royal rumors regarding spinoffs.
Andy Harries, exec producer of the series and founder of Left Bank Pictures, the Sony-backed company that produced the show, has weighed in on the possibility of more stories to emerge out of its royal triumph.
Harries said that his company was “lucky” with The Crown because it did a deal “at the beginning of Netflix’s life” and was able to retain the rights to the show.
“I can assure you [that deal] feels very, very good and it gives us the opportunity to think about what we can do further with The Crown at some point. It’s obviously an endless subject. We could go back or we could go on. We did six seasons, a very defined period of six decades,...

Peter Morgan is a playwright, screenwriter and TV series creator and showrunner who has been described by The Guardian as “Britain’s leading contemporary screen dramatist,” and about whom the publication wrote, “There is no one who works quite like him. Actually, there might be nobody who has worked quite like him in British drama since Shakespeare. He specializes in taking the lives of public figures, mingling the events and words of their lives with his own imaginings, and recasting it as drama that is as close to documentary as possible without actually being a docudrama.”
Morgan wrote the theatrical productions Frost/Nixon, which was on the West End in 2006 and Broadway in 2007; The Audience, which was on the West End in 2013 and Broadway in 2015; and Patriots, which was on the West End in 2023 and Broadway in 2024. This article contains major spoilers for House of the Dragon season 2 episode 8 “The Queen Who Ever Was.”
As surely as the seasons change and winter comes, the fortunes of our lives remain forever in flux. But few, including Rhaenyra and Alicent, would dream they’d turn this fast. Aye, not even a full season ago, House of the Dragon featured a surprising detente between Queen Rhaenyra, the ruler who was chosen by King Viserys I to be his heir, and Queen Alicent, the wife of Viserys who played a pivotal role in usurping Rhaenyra’s claim.
The moment was shocking partially because no such event occurred in George R.R. Martin’s book on which the show is based. As far as the Westerosi historians know, Rhaenyra never sneaked into King’s Landing, the belly of the beast for her enemies, nor did she once attempt to entreat with a girlhood friend named Alicent.

It’s not uncommon for a prominent British actor to be labeled British acting royalty. All types, from Laurence Olivier to Maggie Smith, have worn the label but nobody perhaps has literally worn that title recently to the extent as Helen Mirren. She has had a long varied career and has earned her place as one of the holders of acting’s triple crowns by playing a variety of British monarchs.
Her Oscar came for playing the British Queen Elizabeth II in “The Queen,” which dealt with her reaction to the unexpected death of Princess Diana. She would revisit the role nine years later for a Tony on Broadway in the play “The Audience,” which dealt with Elizabeth’s relationships with the various prime ministers who have served under her. It was a different Queen, Elizabeth I, that would bring Mirren one of her four Emmys, when she starred in...

The nominations for the 76th annual Emmys have dropped. There were some records broken, a lot of surprises including 36 first-time nominees and some major snubs. And a lot of fun facts and trivia about this year’s nominees. FX’s period drama series “Shogun” earning 25 Emmy nominations this year, the most of any dramatic series this year. The original NBC miniseries adaptation of the James Clavell best-seller which starred Richard Chamberlain and the legendary Toshiro Mifune received 14 nominations and won for limited series, costume design, graphic design and title sequences. Hulu’s “The Bear” broke the record for most nominations for a comedy series earning 23 nominations. NBC’s “30 Rock” had held the record with 22 nominations since 2009. Native Americans finally have some representation in this year’s nomination with Lily Gladstone and Kali Reis earning outstanding supporting actress nominations for Hulu’s “Under the Bridge” and HBO’s “True Detective: Night Country.

Looks like cerulean is coming back in style.
Producer Wendy Finerman and screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna are said to be back at work developing a sequel to the dishy 2006 hit “The Devil Wears Prada.” A deal has not been formally announced, but a recent reuniting of the three main stars, Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, and Emily Blunt at the SAG Awards earlier this year showed that the troika seemed eager to fan the flames of buzz for a long-rumored second film. (Puck first reported this wisp of news.)
Supposedly the new film checks in with Streep’s Miranda Priestly, who still runs the fashion magazine “Runway,” but now has to navigate a brave new world of online publishing, and, no doubt, social media influencers. Blunt’s Emily Charlton is now the head of a fashion brand that advertises with “Runway.” Whether Hathaway’s character winds up back in the mix is unclear,...

Warning! Spoilers ahead for House of the Dragon season 2, episode 1, and Fire & Blood.
Fire & Blood author George R. R. Martin comments on House of the Dragon season 2's Blood and Cheese storyline and the audience backlash to it. After getting off to a strong start in 2022, the hit Game of Thrones spinoff returned last month with the premiere of season 2. House of the Dragon season 2 reviews have been overwhelmingly positive from critics, but episode 1's adaptation of the Blood and Cheese plot proved controversial on social media after the episode's release.
In a recent blog post, Martin comments on House of the Dragon's handling of Blood and Cheese in episode 1, acknowledging its divisiveness. The author calls the episode 1 ending "powerful," but largely saves his thoughts on the matter for a future blog post. Check out his comments below:

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms spinoff will likely reveal the conclusion of House of the Dragon's Targaryen war of succession. The new spinoff focuses on Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire, Egg a.k.a. Aegon V Targaryen. Despite a different premise, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms features several Targaryen characters, so it would be hard to avoid House of the Dragon's ending.
The newly announced Game of Thrones spinoff, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, threatens to spoil House of the Dragon's ending well before the HBO series concludes. While production on A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has only just begun, House of the Dragon season 2 is currently airing on Max, picking up where the hugely successful first outing left off. Also a prequel to Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon is set roughly two centuries before HBO's...
