For many years, Hollywood didn't really know what to do with Ryan Reynolds. He was tried as a romantic lead, but few of his romance films were enormous hits. He also stumbled as an intense horror icon; the remake of "The Amityville Horror" didn't do him any favors. Reynolds was celebrated as a comedic lead in films like "Waiting..." and "Van Wilder," but he could only play an immature buffoon for so long. Many know of his missteps as an action star, as films like "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" and "Green Lantern" have been wildly lambasted by fans and even Reynolds himself. It wouldn't be until performances in films like "The Voices," "Pokémon Detective Pikachu," and of course, "Deadpool" that the destined-for-stardom star would finally become a force to be reckoned with. His 2024 film "Deadpool & Wolverine" (which he also produced and co-wrote) made over $1.3 billion.

With the latest billion-dollar hit Deadpool & Wolverine, Ryan Reynolds has established himself as a brand in Hollywood. A decade ago, the actor had a very different career graph. He was starring in flops back-to-back and interestingly he noticed a pattern in these types of films. After starring in a 2013 supernatural action film that bombed at the box office, he decided to take a step back.

Reynolds decided to reevaluate his movie selection process and started appearing in projects that he felt more comfortable in. He wanted more creative control in his films, a dream that came true when he entered the Deadpool franchise in 2016.

When it was first released in 2013, R.I.P.D. earned a reputation as a “so bad, it’s bad” movie, and the film’s poor box office performance reflected that. However, in the streaming era, it’s gotten a bit of a re-evaluation, and its cult following has been inching the film toward “so bad, it’s good” territory. The original film starred Ryan Reynolds, Jeff Bridges, Kevin Bacon, and Mary–Louise Parker. At the time of the movie’s opening, Reynolds told us it was an amazing cast to work with. Keanu Reeves has been at the forefront of some of cinema's most important franchises, including "The Matrix" and "John Wick." Even one of his biggest bombs has, against all odds, also become a franchise. Reeves starred in Universal's tremendously expensive blockbuster "47 Ronin" back in 2013. It was a major flop at the time and actually hurt the actor's career a bit. But nearly a full decade later, everything came full circle, and a sequel to that flop was released. Yes, was! As in, it already came out ... last year.
"Blade of the 47 Ronin" is a sequel to the movie in question, and debuted in 2022. One would be forgiven for not realizing it, as it wasn't quite as big as the original, to put it mildly. Unfortunately, Reeves didn't return for the follow-up, but for those who enjoyed that film, there is a sequel out there you can watch right now.

In 2012, Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington teamed up for a commercially successful action/thriller in the form of "Safe House." While the film was met with mixed reviews from critics in its day, it was a sizable financial hit, taking in $208 million at the global box office, including more than $126 million domestically. The film has also remained a staple on cable TV and streaming in the years since its release. Perhaps not surprisingly, Universal Pictures was, at one point, developing a sequel.
The follow-up was originally announced in late 2012 shortly after the film's successful theatrical run. At the time, it was reported that writer David Guggenheim would return to pen the screenplay. Now, here we are more than a decade later and next to nothing has been said officially regarding "Safe House 2." So, is the movie still happening? Would Washington or Reynolds return? We're here to break down everything we know.

A notoriously huge bomb from one of cinema's biggest stars has curiously found new life on Netflix a full decade after the film initially failed in theaters. The movie in question is 2013's "After Earth," which starred Will Smith and, his son Jaden Smith, and was directed by M. Night Shyamalan, of "The Sixth Sense" and "Split" fame, The results were nothing shy of disastrous for Sony Pictures at the time. And yet, the world of streaming has curiously given the movie new life.
The expensive sci-fi flick recently dropped on Netflix and rapidly made its way into the streamer's top ten daily charts. Stacked amongst all of the pricey, flashy, Netflix original films, a critically-panned flop is being watched more than almost anything else available on the service right now. It's a movie that even Smith, who's had far more successes than failures in his career, acknowledges as a critical misstep.

It's been five years since "Sicario: Day of the Soldado" came out, meaning that the franchise about the brutal world of fighting drug cartels has been dormant for half a decade. Josh Brolin still wants a third entry to see the light of day, although the actor seems to strongly doubt whether or not it will happen, given the way the movie business currently operates.
The "Goonies" and "Dune" actor recently spoke with Variety in an interview that covered quite a bit of his career. At one point, he was asked about how he manages to find a lot of the filmmakers he works with, such as Denis Villeneuve on the first "Sicario" back in 2015. Brolin explained that they have been trying to get "Sicario 3" off the ground for some time, but the clock is ticking and times have changed:

Read on for the Netflix Top 10 (Week of February 27).

“A Man Called Otto” (Sony/$14.99) was a flop as an adult-appeal awards contender, but it came out on top of VOD charts the week before the Oscars. Challenging its dominance is a strong performance by “Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero” (Crunchyroll/$9.99), which took #1 at Google Play while “Otto” led at Vudu and iTunes.
Netflix has an eye-popping nine theatrical releases on its top 10, including six studio sequels. Among those are four separate “Hunger Games” franchise entries, despite those films spending years in constant basic-cable rotation.
Neither “Otto” nor “Dragon” spent much time at a premium price. Sony quickly dropped the price of “Otto” from its initial $19.99. “Dragon,” from the Sony-owned Japanese anime label Crunchyroll, was introduced as a $9.99 purchase. It opened in U.S. theaters last August, the same week that “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba – To the Swordsmith Village” opened to over $10 million.

The Pogues ruled the Netflix English-language TV charts once again. Outer Banks Season 3 reigned over the Top 10 for the second week in a row from February 27 to March 5.
The third installment racked up another 99M hours viewed, in addition 154.97M that it tallied last week. Seasons 1 and 2 also remained in the Top 10 with 34M hours viewed and 27.7M hours viewed, respectively.
While it didn’t make it into the global Top 10, Chris Rock‘s latest comedy special, Selective Outrage, ranked No. 7 in the U.S. among TV shows for the week, according to Netflix. Since the special debuted on Saturday evening, it was only available for about one day of the measurement window. So it’s not entirely unsurprising that it wouldn’t make it into the overall Top 10 shows.
The special was only available in English over the weekend and recently began rolling out in different languages.

Few directors have had as eclectic a career as Robert Schwentke. His 2002 German-language debut Tattoo — a slick Se7en-style serial-killer thriller — got the attention of Hollywood, and he initially appeared to be on the classic studio-director track, helming the Jodie Foster-starrer Flightplan, the all-star action hit Red and its sequel, and, most recently, the G.I. Joe movie Snake Eyes with Henry Golding and Andrew Koji.
But even from the start, Schwentke was a difficult director to pigeonhole. Best known for his action thrillers, he also took time to direct the romantic sci-fi drama The Time Traveler’s Wife with Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams, the supernatural comic-book adaptation R.I.P.D. with Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges, and two films in the Divergent YA sci-fi franchise with Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort.

When asked about R.I.P.D., Jeff Bridges said he was “a little underwhelmed” after finally watching the 2013 movie. “The studio made some, uh, choices that I wouldn’t have made,” he added. Bridges’ colorful performance was praised, but that was as much positivity critics could muster about this misfire of a comic-book adaptation. Adding insult to injury was the box-office report; Robert Schwentke’s action-comedy cost Universal 130 million and failed to break even. Despite the first movie’s failings, Universal went ahead with a sequel. Nine years later. It’s standard to dust off, kick around and spruce up old IPs these days, but surely no one was expecting another go at the Dark Horse comic book, much less one worse than the first attempt.

R.I.P.D. 2: Rise of the Damned is a Western directed by Paul Leyden, starring Jeffrey Donovan and Penelope Mitchell.
A blend of the wild west with a more mystical supernatural dimension.
Premise
When Sheriff Roy Pulsipher finds himself in the afterlife, he joins a special police force and returns to Earth to save humanity from the undead.
R.I.P.D. 2: Rise of the Damned About the Movie
A rather banal production that might have an audience. It is difficult to foresee.
Bordering the B movie category, this is a feature that will neither be remembered nor leave a mark. The characters are unconvincing, the gimmicks are bad, but at the same time it is harmless entertainment.
Enjoy.

"That was unexpected." Universal All-Access has revealed a short trailer for a direct-to-video sequel titled R.I.P.D. 2: Rise of the Damned. Yes, they decided to make a sequel to R.I.P.D., the wacky supernatural action movie from 2013 that ended up bombing when it opened. Considering it took them almost 9 years to make this sequel, it seems to be a cash grab move for the studio, bringing back an existing IP for more "content" instead of making anything new. Like Back to the Future Part III, this sequel is set in the Old West in 1876. The Wild West has gone to Hell, literally, and the world's best hope of being saved lies in the gun-slinging hands of Sheriff Roy Pulsipher as he becomes the newest officer for the Rest In Peace Department enforcing the afterlife's laws. Jeffrey Donovan stars with Penelope Mitchell, Jake Choi, Richard Brake, and Kerry Knuppe. At least the trailer is free to watch,...

Why do some movies get sequels and others do not? Under normal circumstances, it’s because one makes money and the other doesn’t. But then how do you explain something like the upcoming R.I.P.D. 2: Rise of the Damned? The belated—as in nine years later—follow-up to Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges’ 2013 misfire follows on a path created by one of the worst movies of either previous star’s careers. It was also one of their least successful endeavors.
Released about a decade late in its attempt to jump on the Men in Black bandwagon from the late ‘90s, R.I.P.D. was a poor attempt at duplicating that high-concept buddy film about a young gun and wisened cowboy that was previously perfected by Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones in 1997. Like a department store that pulls out its winter holiday items weeks before All Hallows' Eve, Netflix isn't going to let a little thing like the calendar stop it from bombarding its subscribers with Christmas movies in November. That's not to say the streamer's exclusive yuletide rom-coms are all bad — quite the opposite, in fact (consider this your friendly reminder to finally watch "Single All the Way" this year).
Fortunately, if films like "Falling for Christmas" (aka the long-awaited Lindsay Lohan Netflix Christmas movie) aren't your bag, there are plenty of other options on the service to choose from that month. Perhaps you'd be more inclined to watch "Slumberland," Francis Lawrence's fantasy film adaptation of Winsor McCay's classic "Little Nemo in Slumberland" comic strips starring Jason Momoa as a shaggy-furred half-man, half-animal with mountain goat horns and an impeccably flamboyant fashion sense? One of the biggest box office bombs of the 2010s is getting a sequel in the form of "R.I.P.D. 2: Rise of the Damned." Yes, really, and we even have a trailer to prove that nobody is having their leg pulled. The folks at Universal Pictures thought there might be enough of an audience for this, nearly a decade after the original Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges two-hander lost a boatload of money (to the point where Reynolds re-thought his entire career). And they even got an actual known actor to take on the lead role in the form of Jeffrey Donovan ("Burn Notice").
Now, it is really important to point out that this is a direct-to-video sequel, meaning they presumably spent a whole lot less money on it. That is just about the only way in which a sequel to a bomb this big makes any sense.

Nine years ago, Universal released a supernatural action comedy called R.I.P.D.: Rest in Peace Department, which didn’t do much at the box office despite starring Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges. Made on a budget somewhere in the 150 million range, R.I.P.D. only earned 78.3 million worldwide. It was considered a bomb… but that hasn’t stopped Universal from making a direct-to-video sequel. Made completely under the radar, the sequel is called R.I.P.D. 2: Rise of the Damned – and it has already been screened for the ratings board at the Motion Picture Association, earning a PG-13 rating for “sequences of violence, language, disturbing images and some crude/sexual references“.

For many years, Hollywood didn't know what to do with Ryan Reynolds. Possessed of an infectious, smartass sense of humor, a swimmer's physique, and matinee idol good looks, he couldn't manage to find a project that was ideally suited to his talents. He was the romantic lead in several lightweight Hollywood comedies like "The Proposal," starred in intense indie/horror acting showcases like "The Nines" and "Buried," and tried out effects-driven blockbusters like "R.I.P.D." and "Green Lantern" before finally hitting the big time with films like "Deadpool," "Free Guy," and the memorable, memorable "Red Notice." Reynolds currently remains wealthy as the part-owner of Mint Mobile, Aviation Gin, and...

Spoilers for "The Adam Project" follow. For a non-spoiler review of "The Adam Project," head over here.
Ryan Reynolds occupies a strange place in stardom. Reynolds is handsome, talented, incredibly funny, and possessed of that ineffable "it" star quality so important to being a movie star, and yet — with notable exceptions — his individual films aren't particularly beloved. Reynolds himself even seems to be aware of this, as he took several opportunities in "Deadpool" to riff on his roles in the ill-received superhero films "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" and "Green Lantern." Few talk about "R.I.P.D.," and...

Wake up, Neo.
It’s December 2021 and to celebrate HBO Max is bringing back a classic sci-fi franchise for one last ride. The list of new releases on HBO Max this month is highlighted by The Matrix Resurrections on Dec. 22. This is the long-awaited return to the reality-bending saga from The Wachowskis. Writer/director Lana Wachowski returns as do stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss as Neo and Trinity, respectively. This time around it’s 20 years after The Matrix Revolutions and “Neo lives a seemingly ordinary life as Thomas A. Anderson in San Francisco where his therapist prescribes him blue pills. Neither he nor Trinity recognize each other. However, Morpheus offers him the red pill and reopens his mind to the world of the Matrix.”

Japan: Where undead Hollywood franchises go to get a new lease on life. It worked for “The Fast and the Furious” with “Tokyo Drift.” It worked for “X-Men” with “The Wolverine.” It even worked for “3 Ninjas” with “3 Ninjas: Kick Back,” at least so far as that movie paved the way for Hulk Hogan to star in “3 Ninjas: High Noon at Mega Mountain” a few years later. And now — to a surprising degree even despite that precedent — it works for “G.I. Joe” with “Snake Eyes,” a back-to-basics origin story which that was right on the brink of being forgotten.
Arriving in theaters more than eight years after the mild success of Jon M. Chu’s “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” and requiring exactly zero knowledge of either the previous movies or the Hasbro toys that inspired them, “Snake Eyes” is such a generic “cage-fighting orphan gets recruited into the Yakuza and...

Karen Robinson (Schitt’s Creek), Joe Regalbuto (Murphy Brown), Kathleen Chalfant (The Affair), Maxwell Whittington-Cooper (Human Capital) and Abubakr Ali (Power Book II: Ghost) are set as series regulars opposite Caitlin Kinnunen and Bella Ortiz in the CW’s untitled drama pilot executive produced by Jennie Snyder Urman.
Written by Claire Rothrock and Ryann Weir and directed by Tessa Blake, the Untitled Urman/Rothrock/Weir Project centers on two millennial nuns – a devout true believer (Kinnunen), and a new arrival (Ortiz) who has yet to take her final vows – who start as strangers and become sisters on a funny, spiritual journey to understand their own faith and place in the Catholic church.
Robinson will play Sister Mary Annette Shiloh (“Smash”), the loving, defacto head-nun-in-charge, slyly trying to slingshot the Church into the 21st Century by mentoring the next generation.

You’d be forgiven for forgetting that the G.I. Joe franchise was once set to continue this year, with awkwardly-titled prequel/reboot hybrid Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins flying under most people’s radars anyway, even without the recent announcement that it had become the latest movie to fall victim to the Coronavirus pandemic. Now, it’s been delayed from October of this year to an unspecified date in 2021.
The two previous installments in the series didn’t receive much love from either critics or audiences, with The Rise of Cobra earning a 34% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a box office total of $302 million, while sequel Retaliation suffered from worse reviews but improved commercially. Although, a global tally of $375 million isn’t exactly a great return for a $130 million action movie with Dwayne Johnson in the lead.

Ryan Reynolds has spent the better part of a decade bashing Green Lantern to anyone who will listen, and even actively discourages people from watching the infamous disaster. Before Deadpool came along and became the highest-grossing R-rated movie in history, the actor had something of an unwanted reputation for starring in terrible comic book films having previously appeared in Blade: Trinity, X-Men Origins: Wolverine and R.I.P.D. along with his ill-fated outing as Hal Jordan.
Even though he’s now got a successful superhero franchise under his belt, with Deadpool 3 making a slow crawl through development at Marvel Studios, there’s still been rumors that the 6 Underground star could show up for a surprise cameo in Zack Snyder’s Justice League. While this would have sounded ridiculous as recently as a couple of months ago, the fact that the Snyder Cut even exists and Michael Keaton will be playing Bruce...

Ryan Reynolds may be firmly entrenched at the top of the Hollywood A-list, but it took him a while to get there. The massive success of Deadpool might have taken his career to a whole new level, but before that the actor was coming dangerously close to getting a reputation as someone who only starred in terrible comic book movies, having previously appeared in Blade: Trinity, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Green Lantern and R.I.P.D.

Paramount’s in desperate need of a reliable franchise. They had one in Transformers, but fans eventually got tired of the endless Michael Bay sequels. Bumblebee was a step in the right direction, but even that film earned less than the studio was hoping for. Nevertheless, they’re banking on Snake Eyes jumpstarting the world of G.I. Joe later this year (hopefully). But the studio has loftier ideas than just that.
According to our sources – the same ones who told us that a Captain Pike Star Trek spinoff is in the works and that Karen Gillan is being eyed for Pirates of the Caribbean 6, both of which we know to be true now – Paramount is planning a crossover between G.I. Joe and Transformers and a post-credits scene in the eventual Joe reboot will plant the seeds for it.

“Seberg” screenwriters Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse are in talks to write a new “G.I. Joe” movie for Paramount and Hasbro, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
The new film is a follow-up to “Snake Eyes: GI Joe Origins” and will be the third live-action film based on the “G.I. Joe” toy line. The new sequel will focus on the origins of the fan-favorite character known for his masked face, black commando uniform and ninja training.
“Snake Eyes,” which wrapped production before the pandemic, centers on the early days of Snake Eyes, when he tries to become a member of the Arashikage Clan, a ninja kinship-based in Japan. According to “G.I. Joe vs. Cobra: The Essential Guide,” the Arashikage worked as shadowy assassins for generations, using deception to earn their keep as ninjas, as well as developing a reputation for being able to perform impossible tasks.

You’d be forgiven for forgetting that the G.I. Joe franchise even existed despite it being around for over a decade, with the series having little in the way of forward momentum following 2013 sequel Retaliation. Both installments suffered from tepid reviews and underwhelming box office totals, not even coming close to matching the numbers posted by Transformers, Hasbro’s marquee property when it comes to making blockbuster movies.
That being said, any brand with even the slightest hint of name recognition isn’t going to go to waste in modern day Hollywood, and a spinoff for fan-favorite character Snake Eyes was officially announced in May 2018, with Red and R.I.P.D. director Robert Schwentke behind the camera and Crazy Rich Asians star Henry Golding cast in the title role.

According to HollywoodNorth.buzz, G.I. Joe: Snake Eyes is supposed to start shooting this fall in Vancouver. They say that that the movie will shoot from October 15th to December 9th. Apparently the crew members already set up at the location are going around wearing G.I. Joe production shirts.
Evan Spiliotopoulos (Beauty and the Beast and The Huntsman: Winter's War) was previously hired to write the script. We have no idea what the story for the film will tell, but I do like the fact that Snake Eyes is getting his own movie. He’s a fan favorite G.I. Joe character and has been the best part of the two previous G.I. Joe films.

Netflix and Dark Horse Entertainment have inked a deal for the streamer to get first rights for Dark Horse's IP.
Netflix's journey into the comic book realm just hit warp speed.
Netflix and Dark Horse Entertainment have announced that they've entered into an agreement in which Netflix will get a first look at TV and film rights for all of Dark Horse's intellectual property.
Netflix and Dark Horse had already established a relationship with Netflix producing Dark Horse content; including the successful The Umbrella Academy TV series and the decidedly less successful film Polar. This deal formalizes the two company's burgeoning relationship and both sides are already exploring future joint projects. In addition to The Umbrella Academy partnership, Dark Horse Comics is also home to the comic book version of Netflix's super hit Stranger Things.

Joe Stapleton, a longtime New England broadcaster and actor in several Oscar-winning films, died on Tuesday, Boston radio news station Wbz announced.
Stapleton was known throughout Massachusetts for over 25 years for his work in local radio and television, most recently as Wbz’s traffic reporter. But Stapleton, who was an avid movie fan, also built a career as a bit-role actor in movies and TV shows set in the Northeast, including several major recent Oscar contenders.
Among those credits include a role as a police officer in the 2016 Best Picture winner “Spotlight.” He also played a fire marshall in a crucial scene in “Manchester by the Sea,” in which he speaks with Casey Affleck’s character after the fire that sends him spiraling into depression. He also had bit roles in “Mystic River,” “R.I.P.D.” and “The Invention of Lying.”
