With an awards season and year-end lists that tend to favor films that have been released in the last few months, there’s many films that can go overlooked. For our yearly feature highlighting the 50 best films you might have missed––arriving before our overall top 50 films––we’ve sought to dig deep to find the gems that deserved more attention upon their initial release and have mostly been left out of year-end conversations. Hopefully, with many widely available on a variety of streaming platforms, they will begin to find an expanded audience.
While many documentaries would qualify for this list, we stuck strictly to narrative efforts; one can instead read our rundown of the top docs here. We also haven’t included 2024 films that only got awards-qualifying runs this year, including Universal Language and Armand. [This story contains spoilers from The Sex Lives of College Girls season 3, episode 2, “Lila by Lila.”]
The Og girl group in The Sex Lives of College Girls has officially lost a member.
Bela (Amrit Kaur), Kimberly (Pauline Chalamet) and Whitney (Alyah Chanelle Scott) said their goodbyes to Leighton (Reneé Rapp) in the second episode of the Max show’s third season, which aired Thursday. While fans always knew Rapp would be exiting the series this season, they just didn’t know exactly when or why — until now.
The second episode sees Leighton make the difficult decision to transfer from Essex College to MIT. While her girlfriend, Alicia (Midori Francis), is also in Boston, Leighton is ultimately transferring because of MIT’s math program, which will help her with her future career in finance.
“I don’t wanna go,” Rapp tells her friends at one point. “I can’t imagine not having you guys with me.

[This story contains spoilers from the season three premiere of Sex Lives of College Girls, “Welcome Back to Essex.”]
Sex Lives of College Girls picked up right at the start of the school year when it returned with season three, similar to how season one began. But this year, the girls are now sophomores.
Over the summer, Leighton (Reneé Rapp) and Alicia (Midori Francis) traveled across Europe with Leighton’s dad, Kimberly (Pauline Chalamet) worked, Whitney (Alyah Chanelle Scott) was in Washington D.C., with her senator mother (played by Sherri Shepherd), and Bela (Amrit Kaur) and Leighton visited Whitney and even had dinner with Kamala Harris and Doug Emhoff.
When season three picks up, Kimberly and Whitney are still at odds, not having spoken all summer because Kimberly lied to Whitney about kissing her ex, Canaan (Christopher Meyer), at the end of last year. The Sunday before Election Day, NBCUniversal had corporate synergy in full swing.
30 Rockefeller Plaza played home — for a day at least — to the longtime public affairs show Meet the Press, with moderator Kristen Welker grilling Sen. Raphael Warnock and Gov. Doug Burgum.
She was also joined by her colleagues to tee up the election: Steve Kornacki worked the interactive “Big Board,” explaining the polls, and during the panel discussion, MSNBC host Jen Psaki served as the liberal voice.
It was synergy that may never happen again, if NBCU parent company Comcast successfully splits its cable channels from the rest of its media assets.
The cable giant Wednesday said that it was planning to officially move forward with its proposed split, which will see MSNBC, CNBC, E!, Syfy, USA, Oxygen, Golf Channel, Fandango and Rotten Tomatoes spun out into their own company, which will be led by Mark Lazarus.

Executives at Comcast confirmed Wednesday morning that the company is advancing with its spin-off of cable networks and other media assets.
The spin-off will involve CNBC, MSNBC, USA Network, SyFy, E!, Golf Channel and Oxygen True Crime, executives confirmed in a memo sent to employees. The company will also divest digital assets like Fandango, Rotten Tomatoes, Sports Engine and Golf Now into the newly-formed company.
The process could take about a year to complete, Comcast President Mike Cavanagh wrote in the memo. Last month, Cavanagh told investors on a conference call that Comcast was weighing the spin-off of cable networks into a “well-capitalized company owned by our shareholders.”

Most college football observers likely won’t be surprised that the Penn State Nittany Lions are undefeated and enter Week 5 sitting at No. 9 in the rankings. However, very few likely anticipated that the Illinois Fighting Illini would be entering Happy Valley ranked 19th. But somewhat surprisingly, the night game in Beaver Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 28 is a Big Ten ranked-vs.-ranked matchup. The game is airing exclusively on NBC and we recommend that you watch it — and all of the college football and NFL seasons — on Sling TV which is offering 50% off your first month, or you can stream the four months of the football season and save $92.

This is certainly not a good start for him. There’s heavy speculation on social media that suggests Barron Trump might soon get bullied in college.
And just to think, he hasn’t even stepped foot inside a classroom yet. Keep reading below for everything you need to know.
Is Barron Trump Going To Be Bullied In College?
It has been announced that Barron, who just graduated from high school in West Palm Beach back in May, will be attending New York University’s Stern School of Business.
However, he might be less than welcomed on campus. That’s because according to some reports, there were over twenty educators who signed an open letter calling Donald Trump a “threat” to the country.
Jp Eggers, who became Stern’s interim dean on July 1, was one of them. In the open letter, he was one of many that signed the letter that...

Disney and DirecTV have ended their 13-day carriage impasse, restoring ABC, ESPN and 14 other networks in time for Saturday college football games and Sunday night’s Emmy telecast.
While the return of linear service will come as a relief to millions of subscribers, the other terms of the agreement will no doubt catch the attention of the broader media industry as it contends with the complexities of the streaming era.
The parties agreed to bring to market “multiple genre-specific options” for slimmer bundles of channels at lower price points, though no specific prices or proposed channel lineups were mentioned in this morning’s press release. Those new offerings will span sports, entertainment, kids & family, with packages including Disney’s linear networks along with Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+.

Even 13 years after its release, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is still getting new content to keep players in the land of Tamriel. The content may not be officially from Bethesda, but at this point, that’s a minor detail that doesn’t bother anyone.
The Skyrim community has been very active by way of creating new content for the last major installment of the Elder Scrolls franchise. One can hardly blame them, as we don’t have even so much as a whiff of a new game, but this new unofficial Dlc should keep players entertained during their wait!

The CW, continuing a live sports push under new majority owner Nexstar, is bringing back a storied college football tradition: the Snoop Dogg Arizona Bowl Presented By Gin & Juice By Dre and Snoop.
The game, which is entering its 10th year, will feature two bowl-eligible teams from the Mountain West Conference and Mid-American Conference. The CW will air it live from Arizona Stadium in Tucson on the afternoon of Saturday, December 28.
Last year’s edition of the game was sponsored by Barstool Sports. In college football, it is routine for bowl games to rotate through various sponsorships even if the game stays in a given location, though the new branding is certainly a mouthful.
College football’s expanded 12-team playoff goes into effect in this coming season. ESPN and Turner Sports will air those games, many of them bowl contests, which will determine the national champion.

Well, if you had tried to get us to guess the ABC 2024-25 fall season announcement, we couldn’t have predicted much of it.
There are new shows sprinkled throughout, but ABC is going almost full reality, which is a choice.
Let’s see what we’ve got to work with here.
Two new shows will interest TV Fanatics: High Potential, starring Kaitlin Olson, which was delayed due to the strikes, and Doctor Odyssey, starring Joshua Jackson as a cruise ship doctor.
High Potential gets a 10/9c slot on Tuesdays after Dancing with the Stars.
Despite the relationship disaster of The Golden Bachelor, ABC is dedicating an hour and a half weekly to The Golden Bachelorette while snuggling award-winning comedy Abbott Elementary between that and a docuseries called Scamanda.
Thursdays find Doctor Odyssey after 9-1-1 and before Grey’s Anatomy.
And TV Fanatic favorites The Rookie and Will Trent? Saved for midseason.

Mama June: Family Crisis has gotten WeTV fans raging about Alana Thompson going to college, and now June Shannon claims that her daughter might change to another one. Why change and why the fury? Well, it’s related to them requesting donations for tuition and fans think that’s unfair on viewers.
Mama June Alana Thompson Faces Money Issues – June Shannon Lies
WeTV fans were happy when they heard that June Shannon’s daughter might break the mold and get a proper career. However, their hopes faded now. Not because of college fees, but because the whole family seems to be grifting. And, that might be an easier way for Alana to earn than actually studying. June Shannon made off with the kids’ money, so there’s a shortage of cash for a private college.

Other Mama June fans wonder why Alana Thompson can’t go to a cheaper public college.

EA Sports College Football is back, and this time, players will get to see actual names on the back of jerseys — not “Qb #7”. A landmark series of name, image, and likeness (Nil) deals will revive EA’s beloved franchise, which went dormant more than a decade ago.
From 1993 to 2014, EA Sports put out annual college football video games, which eschewed the use of player names to abide by the NCAA rules at the time. The franchise became a classic and still has a strong cult following more than a decade after the release of its most recent title.
EA Sports College Football went away in the wake of a 2013 court decision, which awarded more than $40 million to a group of former college athletes. The plaintiffs, led by Nebraska and Arizona State quarterback Sam Keller, successfully argued that EA Sports had to right to profit from College Football players when the athletes themselves could not.

Three big media players — Disney/ESPN, Fox Corp. and Warner Bros. Discovery — have huddled up to create what some are already calling “Hulu for Sports.”
The joint venture, currently pegged to launch in the fall of 2024, will include ESPN+, plus streaming feeds of 14 linear TV networks: ESPN, ESPN2, Espnu, Secn, Accn, ESPNews, ABC, Fox, FS1, FS2, Big Ten Network, TNT, TBS and truTV. You’ll be able to get it directly from the (as-yet unnamed) joint venture, as well as as an add-on via services like Disney+, Hulu and Max.
One of the critical questions that will determine if the Jv moves the needle is currently unanswered: What will it cost? The monthly pricing will need to be attractive enough to lure cord-nevers and cord-cutters — who have shunned traditional cable and satellite TV — while also ensuring Disney, Fox and Wbd avoid cannibalizing their own streaming services and linear networks.

Believe it or not, "The Sopranos" just turned 25. Yes, 25 years ago, the medium of TV changed forever when David Chase's mafia series kicked off what we think of today as the "peak TV era." The impact and influence of "The Sopranos" cannot be overstated — without "The Sopranos," the TV landscape as we know it for the last 25 years would not exist. There would be no "Mad Men," no "Breaking Bad," no "Succession." Watching "The Sopranos" now, you can see the influence on the two-plus decade's worth of shows to come.
While "The Sopranos" started off strong, the common consensus is that the show really became the juggernaut that we know it as in the fifth episode of season 1, titled "College." Why? Because that was the first episode we saw Tony Soprano whack someone. While it seems commonplace now to have an unlikable protagonist leading a show, in 1999, when the episode in question first aired,...

Getting exclusive rights to the expanded Cfp would be a huge win for ESPN as it prepares to launch a new streaming platform.
ESPN isn’t done bolstering its inventory of college sports. A week after inking a new deal with the NCAA that will see 40 men’s and women’s championship events air on ESPN every year for eight years, reports have emerged that indicate the channel is nearing an agreement that will see it retain exclusive broadcast rights to the College Football Playoff (Cfp), which is set to expand from four teams to 12 in 2024.
The new proposal would see ESPN extend its exclusivity with the Cfp for six years past its current deal, which ends in 2025. The proposal would allow ESPN to sublicense games to Fox or other broadcasters. Apple, Amazon, NBCUniversal, and Warner Bros. Discovery have all reportedly expressed some level of interest in Cfp rights in the past six months.

For all the times that people have told Seth MacFarlane to go to Hell, he’s finally making the journey. MacFarlane is adapting The Shrouded College comic book series for television after Fuzzy Door and UCP acquired the rights. Created by Charles Soule and Will Sliney, The Shrouded College series is an interconnected set of seven adventure-horror stories. Image Comics will publish the overarching story over several years. The first arc of the story, Hell to Pay, was published by Image Comics in November. The second arc, The Bloody Dozen, will be published in late 2023.
Here’s the official synopsis for Hell to Pay from ImageComics.com:
The Shrouded College will give you magic… but you’ll incur a debt. Until it’s paid, you belong to them. Married couple Maia and Sebastian Stone took that deal. They have worked for the College ever since, using their new abilities to track down 666 cursed coins: qurrakh…...

In April 2020, Hank and John Green‘s Crash Course channel partnered with Arizona State University to launch Study Hall. The program offered college-level education in an at-home setting and eventually evolved into its own channel.
A new initiative led by Asu, Crash Course, and YouTube will turn Study Hall into a fully-accredited program. Visitors to the channel can now enroll in a series of “College Foundations” courses, which are taught by Asu faculty and can be taken for college credit.
Enrollment for College Foundations opens today. The seven-week courses are set to begin on March 7, 2023. Instruction is available for four subjects: English Composition, College Math, US History, and Human Communication.
Study Hall’s College Foundations begin with free-to-watch intros that resemble typical Crash Course videos. If, after watching, a learner decides they want a more thorough education, they can pay 25 to enroll in the full course. To receive credit, students...
