The next entry in our series of writers recommending their favourite comfort films is a tribute to Jonathan Demme’s zesty gangster comedy
There’s no more perfect song to open a movie than Rosemary Clooney’s Mambo Italiano in Jonathan Demme’s Married to the Mob. It’s a delightful nonsense song that mimics Cuban mambo music while spilling out lyrics that are about as authentically Italian as a suburban Olive Garden. It’s Demme’s way of announcing that his gangster comedy will be a zesty, multicultural puttanesca that may evoke The Godfather and other genre standards, but mostly indulges in the cartoon kitsch of Long Island goombahs. The film that follows isn’t quite a parody, a spoof or a satire. It’s merely an unmitigated joy from start to finish.

George Folsey Jr., the film editor and producer who collaborated with director John Landis on such films as Animal House, The Blues Brothers, Coming to America and An American Werewolf in London, has died. He was 85.
Folsey died Sunday in Los Angeles of complications from pneumonia, his son, fellow film editor Ryan Folsey (Cabin Fever, Renfield), told The Hollywood Reporter.
His father was George J. Folsey, the famed 13-time Oscar-nominated cinematographer whose credits included The Cocoanuts (1929), Animal Crackers (1930), Thousands Cheer (1944), Meet Me in St. Louis (1944), The Clock (1945), Green Dolphin Street (1947), Adam’s Rib (1949), Million Dollar Mermaid (1953), Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954) and Forbidden Planet (1956).
George Folsey Jr. also edited Shawn Levy’s Cheaper by the Dozen (2003) and The Pink Panther (2006) and Eli Roth’s Hostel (2005) and Hostel: Part II (2007).
After cutting Landis’ directorial debut, Schlock (1973), Folsey edited the Landis-helmed The Kentucky Fried Movie (1977), Animal House (1978), The Blues Brothers (1980) and Coming to America (1988), which he also produced.

These days, its pretty commonplace for directors to make cameo appearances in their own movies, but whats sometimes more interesting is when they opt to show up in other filmmakers' releases. This represents a level of respect and collaboration between different artists and highlights that even in the cutthroat world of Hollywood filmmaking, plenty of directors are on friendly enough terms with one another to pop up in each other's films. While these are often brief cameo appearances, directors have occasionally gained more significant secondary roles in their competitors' films.
Some of the greatest directors of all time have taken a break from their busy schedules on set to portray characters in other auteurs' works. This can be a thrilling change of pace, as directors normally associated with one genre have a surprise appearance in something thats the total opposite of the work theyve become known for. John Landis is one of his generation's most versatile and enduring directors, creating films ranging from broad comedies to innovative horror-comedy hybrids, producing some iconic cult classic movies, making him one of the best directors of all time. Landis has a distinctive style marked by his ability to combine irreverent humor with genre-blending storytelling. His creative partnerships with A-list stars like Eddie Murphy and John Belushi have given audiences numerous unforgettable moments, cementing his legacy and shaping '80s and '90s Hollywood.
Landis films have the rare quality of becoming almost instant cult classics in the 90s (and 80s) while also standing the test of time in terms of technical quality and narratives. His influence has spanned decades, with many of his movies continuing to be rediscovered by new generations of viewers. Jeff Goldblum, 25, has forgotten his mantra. At least, his nameless party guest character – dubbed “Man on the Phone” in the screenplay – has. And it’s the way he delivered that line in 1977’s Annie Hall that made him stand out despite only having a few seconds of screen time. Somehow – just by being himself – Jeff Goldblum turned a throwaway bit into one of the funniest lines in one of the funniest films.
As for Jeff Goldblum himself, he says his mantras are “I am grateful” and “Accept, enjoy, enthuse.” And that, across 50 years on the big screen, is as truthful as it gets when it comes to Jeff Goldblum.
Let’s find out: What Happened to…Jeff Goldblum?

Renny Harlin had pursued David Bowie to play the antagonist in Cliffhanger, but schedules did not align. Harlin's reasoning for wanting to cast the iconic musician in the role was to craft a villain who would be "something special", feeling that Bowie fit the mold perfectly. Despite Bowie's potential, John Lithgow's scenery-chewing performance made him the perfect choice for the role.
With just over three decades since the movie first hit theaters, Renny Harlin reflects on how David Bowie was almost cast as the villain of Sylvester Stallone's Cliffhanger. The 1993 movie saw Stallone starring as Gabe Walker, a former mountain climber and rescue ranger who must overcome his past trauma of losing his girlfriend during a rescue attempt when a group of thieves attempt to rob a U.S. Treasury plane flying through the Rocky Mountains. Also starring John Lithgow and Michael Rooker, the movie saw generally favorable reviews,...

When Julee Cruise died last year on June 9, David Lynch fans lost another of the essential, even inextricable collaborators who became a part of their lives as a result of being part of his art. Her ethereal singing is synonymous with both “Blue Velvet” and the many incarnations of “Twin Peaks,” the latter of whose title theme she performed. If Cruise’s absence from the physical plane runs the risk of dimming her star in our collective memories, Sacred Bones’ vinyl reissue of her 1989 album “Floating Into the Night” offers a welcome opportunity to restore it to its full luster by letting listeners experience her work anew — carrying the legacy of her and Lynch’s historic collaboration, but unencumbered by the images he paired with her music.

Martin Scorsese was at a crossroads in 1985. The King of Comedy had tanked at the box office, and Paramount had recently pulled the plug on his passion project, The Last Temptation of Christ, weeks before production was set to begin. So when the script for After Hours came across his desk via actor-producer Griffin Dunne and producer Amy Robinson, who had appeared in Mean Streets, Scorsese jumped at the chance to helm a small-scale, low-budget black comedy set in New York City’s SoHo neighborhood.
After Hours comes full circle by opening and closing at the workplace of bored data entry drone Paul Hackett (Dunne). In between, Paul’s nightmarish nightlong odyssey sees him repeatedly returning to the same handful of locations and oddball individuals, spiraling ever deeper into an infernal realm of anxiety, paranoia, and free-floating guilt. In this regard, the film shares themes and motifs with other titles...

She’s recently graduated from college and decided to shake her life up by leaving California to take a teaching job in New York City. Once she gets moved into her apartment she starts keeping a video diary for her friends and family back home. It doesn’t take long for the videos to go from her showing off her student’s drawings to her coming home buzzed which isn’t exactly shocking for a recent grad on their own for the first time. Other things like the covers on her bed moving by themselves are less explainable.

Todd Fancey’s vocals have been heard by millions, as the multi-instrumentalist for the New Pornographers and as the balladeer behind “That One Night,” the song that’s central to what is arguably the most cringe episode of “The Office,” 2008’s “Dinner Party.”
The hilarious, earnestly yearning delivery isn’t all that true to Fancey’s artistry, though his new album, “Star Dreams” (out today), nods to the year 1980, which also saw the release of Benny Mardones’ “Into the Night,” a Yacht Rock classic not dissimilar in sentiment.
The 10-track album under the banner Fancey was co-produced by Vancouver music veteran Allan Rodger and sports contributions from vocalist Micae and New Pornographers drummer Joe Seiders, who traded his sticks for the Yamaha Dx-7 electric piano/synthesizer. It took a global pandemic to get Interpol frontman Paul Banks to speak at a reasonable volume. For two decades, the singer and multi-instrumentalist has done a fairly good impression of a fire searcher, shouting through post-punk smoke at survivors. But because the band wrote its seventh full-length remotely, he mostly abandoned the known pleasures of Ian Curtis worship for a more nuanced approach. After first getting a law degree in Turkey, Karaçelik went on to study filmmaking in New York before eventually returning to Turkey to film his debut feature “Toll Booth” (2010), about a Turkish toll-station worker with a vivid imagination. The pic won best first film, actor and cinematography at the country’s Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival.

Barcelona-based Filmax has snagged international rights to “The Burning Cold” (“El frio que quema”), the directorial feature debut of Catalan filmmaker Santi Trullenque, who has established a solid reputation in advertising and television.
Filmax will be presenting the first images and a promo to buyers during this week’s American Film Market.
“The Burning Cold” explores a little-known aspect of the World War II Jewish diaspora: the escape of Jews through Andorra, a micro sovereign country in the Pyrenees mountain range of the Iberian Peninsula.
Set in the winter of 1943 in Andorra, which shares borders with France and Spain, the drama centers on Antonio and Sara, a young married couple who are expecting their first child.

Starting from the Emmy-nominated series Sacred Games, India has had quite a diverse record when it comes to releasing Netflix original series and films. With most of the releases in the Hindi language, Netflix India hasn’t exactly represented the country’s multi-lingual nature yet but still created several iconic originals to influence the Indian pop culture zeitgeist. India Netflix originals have also redefined the careers of some of the country’s finest performers like Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Radhika Apte.

Netflix's international sensation Money Heist thrives on its exciting and engaging plot, in which the main characters pull off nearly impossible heists. While the concept may seem a bit outlandish, the show actually revealed in their documentary about the show that they door their best to make the situations as realistic as possible.

While there certainly is a realistic element to the show, there are some moments that have left fans scratching their heads. These moments of confusion are sometimes a result of inconsistent character motivations or plot points. Other times, certain decisions just seem to go against common sense.

When acclaimed supernatural series Les Revenants/The Returned aired on Canal+ in 2012, it emerged into a fairly barren landscape for French-language scripted TV drama. The story of a remote mountain town whose dead are mysteriously revived, its stylish, cinematic look and philosophical, grown-up approach to genre television had little precedent. While the French ‘polar’ or detective series had long been a television staple, France had almost no tradition of sci-fi, horror and fantasy TV shows – or at least, none taken seriously by its understandably cinephile-and-proud cultural gatekeepers.
In the last five years, coinciding with the global growth of scripted TV drama, that’s all changed. Crime thrillers still wear the crown, but alongside them, France and Belgium are producing and exporting more continuing television dramas and miniseries than ever. From Black Mirror-ish future-set Osmosis and consciousness-swapping Transfers, to cool Parisian teen Vampires and creepy horror Marianne, scripted French-language genre television is exploding.

John Landis struck gold with his madcap 1980 comedy, a masterpiece of choreographed destruction with a killer soundtrack
One of the longstanding hallmarks of a John Landis production are cameos from other film directors, which explains the fun incongruity of Jonathan Demme and David Cronenberg passing through Into the Night or the highbrow/lowbrow cognitive dissonance of Atom Egoyan, Gillo Pontecorvo, and Costa-Gavras appearing in The Stupids. But when Steven Spielberg turns up as the Cook county tax accessor near the end of Landis’ blowout comedy The Blues Brothers, it feels less like a hat-tip than a statement.

Obligatory disclaimer: A show that features people dropping dead for some mysterious reason is admittedly a tough sell right now. But one of the reasons that “Into the Night” isn’t quite the derivative thriller it may seem to be on first glance is that its approach is centered around survival.
The new international drama, now streaming on Netflix, focuses on a group of passengers aboard a flight heading west from Brussels to Moscow. When an Italian soldier Terenzio (Stefano Cassetti) forces his way through the gates and onto a commercial flight, he and the handful of other people with him become some of the only individuals to escape a deadly worldwide event brought on by exposure to sunlight.

It’s the first day of May, and Netflix is already knocking it out of the park with a big content drop to keep you busy while you’re stuck inside. Tons of great new movies and shows have landed on the service today, including plenty of wonderful classics you’re going to want to check out.
Perhaps most notable is the inclusion of Back to the Future and Back to the Future Part II, which will be joining the third film to round out the trilogy. This time-traveling classic would make for excellent weekend family viewing alongside Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory and its more modern adaptation, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
While those films are suitable for families, you can rest assured that Netflix has you covered on children-specific content, too. Your little ones will be happy to see multiple Thomas & Friends titles and the animated sequel Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa,...

Belgium takes the plunge into the Netflix pool with a production belonging to one of the genres most beloved by the communities of fans of the platform: the disaster series. “What the hell?” Thus begins the trailer for Into the Night, the first Netflix series produced in Belgium, created by Jason George and directed by Inti Calfat and Dirk Verheye. On an evening like any other, at Brussels’ international airport, a crowd of strangers cross paths. Their singular destinies will soon collide due to a universal catastrophe. Passengers from the flight 21 Brussels to Moscow do not know it yet, but the sun has suddenly become deadly for human beings. And it isn’t a vulgar atomic shelter that will allow humanity to survive. Their only option? To become night owls. In any case, that is what believes Talenzio, a military man linked to Nato who, when told about the situation,...
