Exclusive: The Institute, MGM+‘s thriller series based on the 2019 Stephen King novel, has rounded out its cast. Brendan Beiser (The Boys) is set as a series regular, and Mary Walsh (Resident Alien) and Jordan Alexander (Gossip Girl) have been tapped for recurring roles in the series from director/executive producer Jack Bender, writer/executive producer Benjamin Cavell and MGM+ Studios. Production will begin in Nova Scotia later this year.

They join previously announced Mary-Louise Parker, Ben Barnes, Simone Miller and Jason Diaz, along with Joe Freeman, Fionn Laird, Hannah Galway, Julian Richings, Robert Joy, Viggo Hanvelt, Arlen So, Birva Pandya, Dan Beirne, Martin Roach and Jane Luk.

The Paramount+ Movie Nights series will return to New York this summer with over 25 free, outdoor screenings. Paramount+ will also be the official sponsor of Bryant Park Movie Nights, the longest running outdoor movie series in New York City, and Brooklyn Magazine’s Movie Nights, now at four parks across Brooklyn including Coney Island.

Canadian broadcaster Citytv has released a trailer for the international Law & Order spinoff, which is being made in partnership with NBC’s Universal Television. Exclusive: Clint Eastwood’s Juror No. 2 at Warner Bros. has rounded its cast with Amy Aquino, Adrienne C. Moore, Cedric Yarbrough, Chikako Fukuyama and Onix Serrano.

The movie follows Justin Kemp, played by Nicholas Hoult, who while serving as a juror in a high-profile murder trial, finds himself struggling with a serious moral dilemma — one he could use to sway the jury verdict and potentially convict–or free–the wrong killer. “Underage photos of me were used, and examples of me acting in character were presented as hateful. My friend Jane was falsely portrayed as a victim, and her attempts to set the record straight have been ignored. She gave me permission to include her in this message.”

The “Law & Order” universe is heading up north. Citytv has ordered the series “Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent,” Rogers Media announced on Monday. The pickup was revealed a day before Rogers Media’s virtual upfront presentation on June 6.

The Toronto iteration hails from Vancouver-based Lark Productions and Cameron Pictures Inc. in association with Citytv. The first season is planned as ten hour-long episodes, set to premiere in Spring 2024. The show is based on the “Law & Order” franchise created by Dick Wolf for Universal Television, which will distribute the series internationally.

But in this case, “Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent” also takes its cue from “Law & Order: Criminal Intent,” the third series in Wolf’s “L&o” franchise. The original “Criminal Intent,” created and produced by Wolf and René Balcer, ran for 10 seasons between 2001 and 2011, and starred Vincent D’Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe.

The drama that stars Andie MacDowell and Chyler Leigh has been a ratings winner since premiering Jan. 15, regularly topping Bravo’s Real Housewives of Potomac, TLC’s 90 Day Fiancé: The Other Way, and HGTV’s Home Town on Sunday nights. It ranks as the No. 1 most-watched program on Sundays among households, P2+, W18+ and P18+ on a L+Sd basis.

Exclusive: The New York-based Visit Films has acquired world rights excluding Canada to the video store dramedy I Like Movies, which will debut as part of the Discovery program at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival.

The film was co-written and directed by first-time filmmaker Chandler Levack who negotiated the deal with Ryan Kampe of Visit Films alongside producer Lindsay Blair Goeldner and co-producer Evan Dubinsky.

Set in Burlington, Ontario, in 2003, the film follows hyper-ambitious teenage cinephile Lawrence Kweller, who dreams of attending film school at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. In order to raise the hefty tuition fee, he gets his dream job at the local video store, Sequels. Wracked with anxiety about his future, Lawrence begins alienating the most important people in his life, including his best friend, Matt Macarchuck, and his single mother, Terri, all while developing a complicated friendship with his older female manager, Alana.

Rupert Everett is to star in AGC Television, Lionsgate Television and Night Train Media espionage drama Gray, which has entered production in Toronto, as the series rounds out key cast. Check out a first-look picture of leads Lydia West and Patricia Clarkson above.

AGC Studios’ TV arm is producing, with Lionsgate, whose involvement was previously announced, and Night Train co-financing. The show stars Clarkson as CIA spy Cornelia Gray, who comes in from the cold after 20 years in hiding and discovers a new mole within her old spy network. Lydia West (It’s a Sin) co-stars.

NBCUniversal has rebranded its international production business to better align with Universal Studio Group and sister studios UCP, Universal Television and Universal Television Alternative Studio.

Under the rebrand, NBCUniversal International Studios will now be known as Universal International Studios. Variety understands that the change is purely cosmetic and little else is changing structurally on the international side. The shift solely impacts the production operations, and distribution group NBCUniversal International Global Distribution will remain titled as such.

The U.K.-based Universal International Studios houses a number of production companies, including “Downton Abbey” and “The Last Kingdom” producer Carnival Films, “Made in Chelsea” outfit Monkey Kingdom and “We Are Lady Parts” producers Working Title Television. For seven seasons, Adrienne C. Moore played an inmate nicknamed Black Cindy on Netflix’s dark comedy “Orange Is the New Black,” set in a women’s prison Litchfield Penitentiary. With her new Canadian television series, “Pretty Hard Cases,” Moore is now on the other side of the law as Kelly Duff, a no-nonsense drug squad detective. But, she has found some important similarities between the two shows that helped make her professional transition an easy one.

“What I learned from my time at ‘Orange’ was that yes, even though prison creates its own microcosm of a world, it’s still dealing with the same dynamics that we deal with on the larger scale of the bigger world — the politics, the theme of education, with love, with rivalries.

Judy Sheindlin, after ending her 25-year run as daytime TV’s favorite judge, is taking her gavel — and other elements of “Judge Judy” — into the streaming wars.

Sheindlin’s new IMDb TV original series, officially called “Judy Justice,” is set to premiere Nov. 1 exclusively on the Amazon-owned free streaming service. New episodes of “Judy Justice,” which follows the same arbitration-based format as her previous gig, will be available each weekday.

The show sets up an interesting test for IMDb TV to see whether it can attract and retain a loyal daily audience, and it’s banking on Sheindlin’s famous no-bs personality to draw a crowd. The first season is set to run for 120 episodes.

For “Judy Justice,” Sheindlin is teaming with her longtime executive producer and director Randy Douthit and co-executive producer Amy Freisleben, both of whom worked on her popular syndicated program.

Amazon’s IMDb TV, continuing its push into third-party distribution, has set a deal with Comcast to be integrated into the company’s Xfinity broadband and pay-tv platforms.

It is the first agreement for IMDb TV and a pay-tv operator. Comcast has led its peer group in weaving streaming services into its Xfinity Flex and X1 platforms, pursuing a strategy of reducing friction for viewers as they toggle between pay-tv and streaming. In recent years, it has made Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, Peacock, YouTube and other streaming outlets available to its subscribers through the Xfinity interface.

IMDb TV, which launched as Freedive in early 2019, has ramped up quickly with a slate of original shows and appeal to advertisers in the burgeoning ad-supported streaming sector.
