Ah, January. A new year, a clean slate, a fresh chance to… do what you’ve always done, maybe? Not that we at IndieWire don’t encourage personal growth, but we do support you if you decide to spend a lot of this month recovering from the holidays and melting into your couch in front of a watchlist.
On Disney+, that means new episodes of “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” and the premiere of “Goosebumps: The Vanishing.” If you’re into creepy crawlies.
Hulu will keep things busy as always with next-day premieres of network shows on ABC and Fox, including the new series “Going Dutch” starring Denis Leary and “Will Trent” Season. The streamer will continue to release standup under the banner “Hularious,” this time with the special “Roy Wood Jr.: Lonely Flowers.” On the originals side, look out for “Whiskey on the Rocks” set in Sweden during the Cold War,...

Comedy actor and podcast host Zach Justice has launched his own indie production banner, Dropouts University Studios.
After the launch of Justice’s Dropouts podcast in 2020, the media venture will produce new podcast shows. That includes The Lunch Table, which teams childhood best friends Justice and Skyler Horne at an old school lunch table to chat about all things sports, comedy, and navigating life in Los Angeles.
Dropouts University Studios will also produce Stop the Bit, hosted by Ryan Leader and Ben Ball and offering audio content that blends sketch comedy and longform podcasting. Justice’s production banner also has in the works a PBS kids education show, a deal with MGM Alternative, a division of Amazon MGM Studios, and other unspecified film and TV projects.

Netflix is getting really good at making Hallmark-type films. But the streamer does it a bit differently. We know the Hallmark Channel drill: Boy moves to town, girl is trying to get out of a bad relationship, they meet and girl doesn't like boy, and then they end up falling in love and being happy forever. Netflix Originals normally add a lot more intrigue.
We also get actors we know well in most Netflix movies. This will be the case next year (we hope) when Alicia Silverstone is set to join Oliver Hudson, Jameela Jamil, Pierson Fode, and Melissa Joan Hart in a film called A Merry Little Ex-Mas. The script was written by Holly Hester who also penned The Royal Treatment.
The plot involves a recently separated couple trying to have one more Christmas as a family with their children before the mother starts her life over. The issue...

Roger Ebert was never afraid to go against the grain. While most critics loved films like A Clockwork Orange, Gladiator, The Usual Suspects and The Elephant Man, Ebert gave them a big thumbs down. It went the other way as well, though. Far Out Magazine recently noted a number of terrible movies that Ebert inexplicably loved, including three comedies that would be more at home at the Razzies than the Oscars.
Here are three terrible comedies that got kudos from arguably the greatest film critic of all time…
1 Home Alone 3
No Macaulay Culkin? No Chris Columbus? No problem for Ebert. “To my astonishment, I liked the third Home Alone movie better than the first two,” he wrote. “I’m even going so far as to recommend it.”
What was so great about it? “This movie follows the exact formula of the first two, but is funnier and gentler, has a real charmer for a hero,...

It's finally the last weekend of August, which means we're getting so close to fall. While the weather might not be totally cooperating just yet, Netflix has already announced its fall movie lineup and continued to announce which series will be back for new seasons throughout the rest of the year. But before we can get into all the good new releases to come very soon, we have to see off August.
This weekend brings not only the last day of August but the first day of September, and a new month always means a long list of new movies on Netflix! The streamer dropped two brand-new series that will have everyone talking, the Greek mythology dark comedy Kaos and the Spanish medical drama Breathless. The new anime series Terminator Zero also arrive this week along with Adam Sandler's latest comedy special, titled Adam Sandler: Love You.

Actor, producer, platinum-selling recording artist and Grammy Lifetime Achievement award-winner Ice Cube has been pushing to get a fourth chapter in his beloved comedy franchise “Friday” off the ground for years. In a recent conversation with hip-hop legend and timepiece advocate Flavor Flav on the “Flavor of the Week” SiriusXM show, he shared hopes that audiences may get a chance to revisit the storyline.
“We finally got some traction with Warner Bros,” Cube said. “They have new leadership, my man Mike DeLuca, who used to be at New Line when I first started, when I first did the first ‘Friday’ and ‘Players Club’ and ‘All About the Benjamins’. Mike DeLuca was there. So, now he’s running Warner Bros. And him and my man [agent] Michael Gruber was like, ‘Yo, what the f–k is going on with ‘Friday’? Man, let’s get this sh– back online.”

Despite a cast that includes “The Office” co-creator Stephan Merchant, potential new Bond Claes Bang, and national treasure Christopher Walken, crime comedy “The Outlaws” has largely flown under the radar since debuting on Amazon in 2022. But now “Baby Reindeer” has alerted the rest of the world to the talents of Jessica Gunning, its third season, premiering May 31, should both attract a deservedly bigger audience and continue its regular scene-stealer’s meteoric rise.
The continuation of the saga involving seven petty criminals who become embroiled in a dangerous drug money-laundering scheme while undergoing community service was filmed prior to Martha Scott, and the memeable real-life Scotswoman she was apparently based upon, dominating the cultural discourse. Yet in a timely development, Gunning’s supervisor Diane Pemberley is given much more prominence, and indeed more layers, this time around.

It’s a fairly big month on Prime Video in March, at least compared to the other streaming service offerings! There are are two major films arriving on Amazon’s streamer. The first is a remake of the Patrick Swayze action classic Road House. Stepping into the late Swayze’s shoes? A crazy-jacked Jake Gyllenhaal, who really seemed to want to go the extra mile for this project.
The other big film coming to Prime Video is Ricky Stanicky, and the plot sounds really fun! It follows three friends who have always blamed their mistakes on an imaginary guy called Ricky Stanicky. When they have to finally introduce people to Stanicky, they decide to hire a washed-up actor (John Cena) to impersonate him. Hilarity ensues, maybe? But if neither of those make your watchlist, there’s also the return of the animated hit series Invincible.

Kevin James is not exactly a name that comes to mind when one thinks of the phrase "movie star." Meeting your partner’s parents can be challenging. Regardless of your confidence in your relationship, a wrong move with the parental units can spell disaster for your future. For Adam Devine‘s Owen Browning, he never banked on his fiancee’s parents being accomplished bank robbers. This hurdle is a tricky jump for Owen, a by-the-books bank manager, and all-around goofball. Since Deadline formed more than 15 years ago, we’ve never lost sight of the human struggles felt by writers and everyone else during labor standoffs. Today, we proudly launch Strike Talk with Billy Ray and Todd Garner, a weekly podcast dedicated to dissecting the issues that caused talks to break off between the Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, this week prompting the writers to trade their pencils for picket signs.
A reckoning is upon us as writers try to keep their place at a moment when studios and streamers struggle to impose economic efficiencies to show fiscal responsibility to their shareholders, and writers struggle with things like streaming deals that have no chance for backend compensation in success, and series that have far fewer than the 22 episodes that had been the norm on the traditional networks.

Becky is back, and this time it’s… pretty much the same as last time. Three years ago, the world witnessed one of the craziest heel turns in recent history, funny guy Kevin James turned up in Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion’s uber violent Home Alone riff, Becky as vicious neo-Nazi, Dominick. As insane as that sounded to a lot of film fans at the time, it actually worked. James played his villain dead straight, and he was legitimately terrifying. Becky pitted James against the fourteen-year-old titular character, played to smarmy perfection by Lulu Wilson, as he and his gang of murderous white supremacists sought a very particular artifact that just happened to be located in the cabin...

You ever notice how HBO’s releases tend to do the heavy lifting in HBO Max’s content library? That makes plenty of sense given that HBO has a track record of producing hits well before the streaming era even began. Well, a similar concept is now playing out over on Hulu. It all starts early on with season 2 of the delightful comedy Reservation Dogs on Aug. 3. That is followed up by the docuseries Children of the Underground on Aug. 13, Little Demon on Aug. 26, and The Patient of Aug. 30. The most interesting of the bunch,...

Kevin James will portray New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton in a film for Netflix called “Home Team,” according to NBC Sports’ Peter King, who announced the news in his “Football Morning in America” column Monday.
“Home Team” follows Payton in 2012 when the coach was suspended by NFL commissioner Roger Goddell in the entire 2012 season related to the team’s role in the “Bountygate” scandal, in which the team was accused of paying out bounties or bonuses to players who successfully injured opposing team players.
The film shows how Payton began to reassess his life and took a job as the offensive coach for his son Connor’s sixth-grade football team in the Dallas area.

Warner Bros. has shuffled around release dates for three of the studio’s upcoming movies: “Mortal Kombat, “Tom and Jerry” and Hugh Jackman’s sci-fi drama “Reminiscence.”
“Mortal Kombat,” a live-action adaptation of the popular video game, was originally set for Jan. 15, 2021, and will now open on April 16, 2021. “Reminiscence,” which was initially slated for mid-April, was removed from the studio’s calendar. Every year, movie-preview pieces herald the holidays’ arrival; in 2020, the headlines are a little different. As USA Today proclaimed, “10 Must-See Movies to Stream Over the Holiday Season.” They include “Soul,” “Mank,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “Let Them All Talk,” and “Small Axe” — major awards contenders, many of which would have have been theatrical releases. However, they all belong to streamers, not VOD.
Meanwhile, on Friday Vertical Entertainment dropped an action film, “The Informer,” which stars Joel Kinnaman as an ex-con who returns to prison undercover to expose a Polish drug cartel. Shot in 2017 and released in most of the world in 2019, this title from the director of “Escobar: Paradise Lost” is unlikely to show up on anyone’s awards-season list. However, even at $19.99 to rent, it topped two major VOD charts this weekend.

Wherever Adam Sandler goes, Kevin James can usually be found following close behind, with the duo becoming virtually inseparable since the latter made his feature film debut in the pivotal role of Factory Worker in 2004’s 50 First Dates. The highlight of that day’s haul, though, has to be Blood of Zeus, the much-anticipated anime-style series that’s adapting classic Greek myths. Jason O’Mara, Jessica Henwick and Claudia Christian star.

One of Kevin James’ most beloved films is all set to hit Netflix next month. Everyone’s favorite mustached patrolman will ride his Segway straight into many people’s homes when Paul Blart: Mall Cop rolls onto the streaming service in just a couple of weeks, on November 1st.
The delightfully silly comedy centers around a goofy security guard in West Orange, New Jersey who dreams of one day becoming a real police officer. When a gang of bandits take several people hostage while they attempt to rob the shopping center that he’s stationed at, it’s all up to the titular character to save the day and rescue his cute coworker before it’s too late.
Though the flick was panned by critics upon its initial release back in 2009, it still managed to become a box office sensation and grossed an impressive $183.3 million against a $26 million budget. Those...

Adam Sandler and Kevin James seem to be joined at the hip, and you rarely see one of them without the other following close behind. Sandler gave James his first role in a live-action movie when the latter was handed the glamorous part of Factory Worker in 2004’s 50 First Dates, back when he was still best known as the star of sitcom The King of Queens, and they’ve been inseparable ever since.
Over the last fifteen years, Sandler and James have co-starred in the three entries in the Hotel Transylvania franchise, two Grown Ups movies, I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry, Zookeeper, Pixels and Sandy Wexler, while James showed up as himself for an uncredited cameo in You Don’t Mess with the Zohan.

Guillermo del Toro recently unveiled new details for his passion project based on the “Pinocchio” fable, a dark take on the boy puppet for Netflix. At the same time however, Disney is still plotting its live-action remake of “Pinocchio,” meaning there could be two very different versions of the same story on screen in the near future. Those two dueling projects wouldn’t be the first example of twin movies arriving within months or weeks of one another. Sometimes it’s because of studios racing to adapt a popular IP or moment in history, because of scripts that float all across town or because of sheer coincidence. But we’ve had years with two mall cop movies, two movies about terrorist attacks on the White House or two movies about talking bugs and fish. Here are some other notable twin movies.

Becky, the new indie thriller from directors Cary Murnion and Jonathan Milott, earned lots of attention for casting the frequently goofy Kevin James (Paul Blart: Mall Cop, Kevin Can Wait) as a straight-faced, menacing neo-Nazi villain who’s willing to murder a child to get what he wants. But that’s not the only compelling aspect of […]
