Ah, January. A new year, a clean slate, a fresh chance to… do what you’ve always done, maybe? Not that we at IndieWire don’t encourage personal growth, but we do support you if you decide to spend a lot of this month recovering from the holidays and melting into your couch in front of a watchlist.

Hulu will keep things busy as always with next-day premieres of network shows on ABC and Fox, including the new series “Going Dutch” starring Denis Leary and “Will Trent” Season. Comedy actor and podcast host Zach Justice has launched his own indie production banner, Dropouts University Studios.

After the launch of Justice’s Dropouts podcast in 2020, the media venture will produce new podcast shows. That includes The Lunch Table, which teams childhood best friends Justice and Skyler Horne at an old school lunch table to chat about all things sports, comedy, and navigating life in Los Angeles.

Dropouts University Studios will also produce Stop the Bit, hosted by Ryan Leader and Ben Ball and offering audio content that blends sketch comedy and longform podcasting. Justice’s production banner also has in the works a PBS kids education show, a deal with MGM Alternative, a division of Amazon MGM Studios, and other unspecified film and TV projects.

Netflix is getting really good at making Hallmark-type films. But the streamer does it a bit differently. We know the Hallmark Channel drill: Boy moves to town, girl is trying to get out of a bad relationship, they meet and girl doesn't like boy, and then they end up falling in love and being happy forever. Netflix Originals normally add a lot more intrigue.

We also get actors we know well in most Netflix movies. This will be the case next year (we hope) when Alicia Silverstone is set to join Oliver Hudson, Jameela Jamil, Pierson Fode, and Melissa Joan Hart in a film called A Merry Little Ex-Mas. The script was written by Holly Hester who also penned The Royal Treatment.

Roger Ebert was never afraid to go against the grain. While most critics loved films like A Clockwork Orange, Gladiator, The Usual Suspects and The Elephant Man, Ebert gave them a big thumbs down. It went the other way as well, though. Far Out Magazine recently noted a number of terrible movies that Ebert inexplicably loved, including three comedies that would be more at home at the Razzies than the Oscars.

It's finally the last weekend of August, which means we're getting so close to fall. While the weather might not be totally cooperating just yet, Netflix has already announced its fall movie lineup and continued to announce which series will be back for new seasons throughout the rest of the year. But before we can get into all the good new releases to come very soon, we have to see off August.

This weekend brings not only the last day of August but the first day of September, and a new month always means a long list of new movies on Netflix! The streamer dropped two brand-new series that will have everyone talking, the Greek mythology dark comedy Kaos and the Spanish medical drama Breathless. The logline: when new couple Liam and Jamie discover their parents—who both work at their school—are dating, they freak out at the idea of becoming an “incest family” and launch a plan to break them up before their social lives are ruined. What could go wrong?

Despite a cast that includes “The Office” co-creator Stephan Merchant, potential new Bond Claes Bang, and national treasure Christopher Walken, crime comedy “The Outlaws” has largely flown under the radar since debuting on Amazon in 2022. It’s a fairly big month on Prime Video in March, at least compared to the other streaming service offerings! There are are two major films arriving on Amazon’s streamer. The first is a remake of the Patrick Swayze action classic Road House. Stepping into the late Swayze’s shoes? A crazy-jacked Jake Gyllenhaal, who really seemed to want to go the extra mile for this project.

Paramount Pictures has renewed its first-look deal with Todd Garner’s Broken Road Productions.

The deal, first signed in 2018, has seen veteran film producer Garner make Playing with Fire for Paramount Players, which starred John Cena. Currently, he is developing the Rebel Wilson-starring pic Double Fault at Paramount.

“Todd has done it all in this business and really understands how to make crowd pleasing commercial films. He is a great partner to have at Paramount and we can’t wait to see where this next chapter takes us,” Paramount Pictures Motion Picture Group co-presidents Daria Cercek and Michael Ireland said in a statement on Wednesday.

Garner’s upcoming projects currently in post production include Vacation Friends 2 for 20th Century Studios and Hulu; Reunion for Paramount+; Incoming for Spyglass Media Group’s Artist Road; and Xtr’s untitled Diane Warren documentary.

Kevin James will portray New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton in a film for Netflix called “Home Team,” according to NBC Sports’ Peter King, who announced the news in his “Football Morning in America” column Monday.

“Home Team” follows Payton in 2012 when the coach was suspended by NFL commissioner Roger Goddell in the entire 2012 season related to the team’s role in the “Bountygate” scandal, in which the team was accused of paying out bounties or bonuses to players who successfully injured opposing team players.

The film shows how Payton began to reassess his life and took a job as the offensive coach for his son Connor’s sixth-grade football team in the Dallas area.

Jack Giarraputo, the veteran Hollywood executive who co-founded Happy Madison with Adam Sandler, is launching advertising agency Slice Collective at the upcoming European Film Market in Berlin.

The company, co-founded with former Lazard private equity executive Abhishek Som, is a full-service creative advertising agency aiming to produce Hollywood-level campaigns for clients around the world.

Films that Giarraputo has produced have collectively grossed more than $4 billion at the global box office. His credits include films “Anger Management,” “Paul Blart: Mall Cop,” “Happy Gilmore,” “The Wedding Singer,” and series “Rules of Engagement.”

Leading the Slice team is Leo Draper, former VP creative advertising, Sony Pictures, who has had previous stints with StudioCanal and Warner Bros. While at Sony, Draper led the international campaigns for films including “Peter Rabbit,” “Little Women” and “Men in Black: International.”

Warner Bros. has shuffled around release dates for three of the studio’s upcoming movies: “Mortal Kombat, “Tom and Jerry” and Hugh Jackman’s sci-fi drama “Reminiscence.”

“Mortal Kombat,” a live-action adaptation of the popular video game, was originally set for Jan. 15, 2021, and will now open on April 16, 2021. “Reminiscence,” which was initially slated for mid-April, was removed from the studio’s calendar. The animated “Tom and Jerry” remake was moved up a week and will debut on Feb. 26, 2021, instead of March 5.

All three films, along with the rest of Warner Bros. 2021 slate, will premiere on HBO Max on the same day as their theatrical premieres. In total, 18 of the studio’s films — including “Wonder Woman 1984,” “The Matrix 4,” “Dune” and “In the Heights” — will launch day-and-date over the next 12 months. Every year, movie-preview pieces herald the holidays’ arrival; in 2020, the headlines are a little different. As USA Today proclaimed, “10 Must-See Movies to Stream Over the Holiday Season.” They include “Soul,” “Mank,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “Let Them All Talk,” and “Small Axe” — major awards contenders, many of which would have have been theatrical releases. After a stellar October full of spooky flicks and other great releases, Netflix has already come out swinging in November, too. Spyglass Media Group is teaming with Propagate Content, Artists First and Off-Road Productions to form the new comedy film joint venture Artists Road, which will focus on the financing and production of moderate-budgeted commercial comedy movies with marquee talent.

Artists Road has appointed Lakeshore Entertainment alum Mark Korshak as CEO and he’ll report to the joint venture’s co-founders Gary Barber, chairman and CEO, Spyglass; Ben Silverman, chairman and Co-CEO, Propagate Content; Peter Principato, CEO of Artists First; and Off-Road Productions’ Todd Garner.

Spyglass Media Group has joined with Propagate Content, Artists First, and Off-Road Productions to form Artists Road as a new comedy film joint venture.

The companies unveiled the alliance Wednesday, announcing that Artists Road will focus on developing, financing and producing moderately budgeted, commercial comedy films with the genre’s biggest names. Spyglass Media will handle worldwide distribution.

The announcement was made by Gary Barber, Spyglass chairman and CEO; Ben Silverman, Propagate Chairman and co-ceo; Peter Principato, CEO of Artists First; and Todd Garner for Off-Road Productions. It’s true that Netflix is losing some great movies soon, and it goes without saying that no one is particularly happy when that happens. But for everything the service gets rid of at the beginning of the month, it typically makes up for in amazing new content to watch. And as usual, the first drop of November brings along with it a heap of fresh stuff you’ll want to check out, such as comedies like Paul Blart: Mall Cop and Yes Man, popular heist flick Ocean’s Eleven, emotional coming-of-age drama Boyz in the Hood and lots more.

Netflix is adding a ton of great titles over the next seven days. From Monday to Sunday, the streaming giant is unleashing some new Halloween-related originals for you to dig into as we approach October 31st, while it’s an usually busy weekend for the site, too, as Sunday marks November 1st, meaning a load of newly licensed movies and shows are being added to Netflix’s library.

Unfortunately, they aren’t bringing us anything fresh on Monday or Thursday, but the rest of the week is well-stocked. As you can see below, Tuesday the 27th delivers three new originals. The highlight of that day’s haul, though, has to be Blood of Zeus, the much-anticipated anime-style series that’s adapting classic Greek myths. Jason O’Mara, Jessica Henwick and Claudia Christian star.

One of Kevin James’ most beloved films is all set to hit Netflix next month. Everyone’s favorite mustached patrolman will ride his Segway straight into many people’s homes when Paul Blart: Mall Cop rolls onto the streaming service in just a couple of weeks, on November 1st.

The delightfully silly comedy centers around a goofy security guard in West Orange, New Jersey who dreams of one day becoming a real police officer. When a gang of bandits take several people hostage while they attempt to rob the shopping center that he’s stationed at, it’s all up to the titular character to save the day and rescue his cute coworker before it’s too late.

Though the flick was panned by critics upon its initial release back in 2009, it still managed to become a box office sensation and grossed an impressive $183.3 million against a $26 million budget. Those...

Adam Sandler and Kevin James seem to be joined at the hip, and you rarely see one of them without the other following close behind. Sandler gave James his first role in a live-action movie when the latter was handed the glamorous part of Factory Worker in 2004’s 50 First Dates, back when he was still best known as the star of sitcom The King of Queens, and they’ve been inseparable ever since.

Over the last fifteen years, Sandler and James have co-starred in the three entries in the Hotel Transylvania franchise, two Grown Ups movies, I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry, Zookeeper, Pixels and Sandy Wexler, while James showed up as himself for an uncredited cameo in You Don’t Mess with the Zohan.
