Harrison Ford was originally attached to star as Michael Peterson but dropped out and was replaced by Colin Firth.
Todd Peterson (son of Michael Peterson) spoke on Instagram on 28 May 2022 and described the HBO docudrama as inaccurate and poorly researched. In his caption, he wrote "HBO- the danger of hiring evil people to make movies for you... Their evil is reflected in their work... and that evil is absorbed by your viewing audience" and "The evil director, Antonio Campos, should be blackballed by all of Hollywood and never be allowed to work for a first rate [sic] company ever again." Saying of Michael and Kathleen Peterson in the video, "I've said it before- my dad and Kathleen never fought once. I never once ever saw my dad and Kathleen ever have a f****** argument- ever. They had the greatest relationship I've ever seen. I have no f****** idea how that's possible, but it's true... All of those scenes you're seeing on HBO [of them fighting] are complete f****** nonsense... I'll be the first to talk shit [about my dad]. They had a fantastic relationship, my dad and Kathleen." Saying of the director, "The way that this guy showed [how I got here] was a complete lie. He basically erased all that I ever did that I'm proud of- and he also did it to my mom."
The story of Michael Peterson was detailed in a popular documentary by the same name on Netflix in 2018.
The song "More Today Than Yesterday" by Spiral Starecase [sic] was ironically used in episode 1.
This is the second time Toni Collette & Rosemarie DeWitt have played sisters on TV. They previously played siblings on United States of Tara (2009).
