Overall domestic revenue is estimated to come in between $56 million and $57 million, the lowest by a long shot in at least a decade, according to ComScore. This excludes the year the awards show was delayed to early April because of the pandemic and as theaters were still struggling to come back online. Over Oscar weekend in 2021, combined revenue hit $57.2 million over the April 4-6 frame.

The reason for this year’s drought? A lack of new event product and the much-debatad performance of Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World. And nearly all of the top Oscar nominees are now available in the home, or long done with their theatrical runs.

After a strong opening, Marvel Studios' Captain America: Brave New World was hit with a sharp second-week drop, but the movie is holding (relatively) well as it heads into its third weekend in theaters.

Despite mostly negative reviews and a B- CinemaScore (the lowest for any MCU movie so far), the fourth Captain America movie - and first with Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) wielding the shield - has managed to pass $150 million in the U.S., and $300 million worldwide.

Brave New World had a reported production budget of $180M, but this is before marketing costs, and some believe the actual budget would be closer to $300M after extensive reshoots. Even if this is not accurate, the movie may still struggle to make much of a profit by the end of its run.

Even so, this is a positive sign that Marvel may not have an outright flop on its hands.

Captain America: Brave New World marks a significant chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, not only as Sam Wilson’s first solo outing as Captain America but also as a film that revives elements from 2008’s The Incredible Hulk. The movie features the return of Tim Blake Nelson as The Leader and introduces Harrison Ford as President Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, who undergoes a dramatic transformation into Red Hulk.

Given these strong connections to Hulk lore, many fans expected to see Bruce Banner himself play a role in the story. However, despite the heavy Hulk-related themes, Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner does not appear in the movie. Captain America: Brave New World doesn't feel like a Marvel movie.

That clearly is the intention, for the film doesn't feature the typical triumphant Marvel Studios opening fanfare. There is a "Marvel" and a "Studios" that flash up on the screen, along with the words Brave New World in a very uninteresting font. What's missing is the name of the title character.

The 35th Marvel Cinematic Universe movie masquerades as a political thriller and, for the most part, it's a convincing performance. The film doesn't feature a triumphant score (except maybe when its most necessary in the final act of the movie) and it doesn't rely on any of the McU's more light-hearted characters. What we have here is a serious movie complete with a compelling central conspiracy plot involving the President of the United States, who is now Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross (now played by Harrison Ford).

Captain America: Brave New World is the latest installment in the MCU, featuring Anthony Mackie in his first standalone film as Captain America. In this movie, he faces The Leader and, ultimately, Red Hulk, as he seeks to prove himself as more than just a worthy successor to Steve Rogers.

Without giving too much away, the film also lays the groundwork for the future of the MCU, particularly in setting up the new Avengers team and the introduction of Adamantium. During a press interview, it was confirmed that this will eventually tie into the Weapon X program and Wolverine.

Marvel Studios does not set out to court controversy, which makes "Captain America: Brave New World" such a puzzling film. Similar to previous TV series "Falcon & The Winter Soldier," the movie has a framework that seems inevitably political: Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), a Black man, has chosen to be Captain America, but finds himself at odds with his country and President Thaddeus Ross (Harrison Ford).

Then, the movie preemptively retreats from any message, saying we should trust our politicians, no matter how flawed they are, to follow their better angels in the end — an absurd theme for 2025. Compare how '70s "Captain America" comic writer Steve Englehart made then-President Richard Nixon into a super-villain at the height of the Watergate scandal. That took real conviction, the kind you'll never find in a four-quadrant blockbuster.

The biggest unforced error in "Brave New World...

Captain America: Brave New World is not only the fourth installment in Cap's big screen saga, but it also has the peculiar task of following up on a few loose ends from the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe.

As a result, Sam's first stand-alone adventure acts as a bit of an indirect sequel to The Incredible Hulk while simultaneously following up on the story set up in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Captain America: Brave New World landed $12 million in Thursday previews at the domestic box office as Marvel Studios attempts to reboot the franchise with an entirely new cast — and deliver a solid swing for Marvel Studios.

That puts the year’s first tentpole to open to $90 million-plus over the four-day Valentine’s Day/Presidents Day weekend, one of the top showings ever for the holiday and in line with pre-release tracking. What’s Good: The character work is quite nice and overall, the acting is superb, showing that actors taking these roles seriously really elevates the material.

What’s Bad: The action sequences and the overall CGI quality are subpar and don’t measure up to what the franchise has done before.

Loo Break: Brave New World doesn’t overstay its welcome, but sadly, many of the action sequences feel very TV-like, so it’s no problem if you miss one or two of them.

Disney’s association with controversies is nothing new. These often stem from accusations of pandering to specific groups or using social issues as marketing tools. However, it’s not every day that one of its stars ignites a firestorm.

Yet, Anthony Mackie, who officially takes on the mantle of Captain America in MCU’s Captain America: Brave New World next month, found himself at the receiving end of reprehension. Mackie commented about the iconic superhero, which seemed to be critiquing America’s values and causing a backlash reminiscent of Rachel Zegler’s divisive remarks on Snow White. Unlike Zegler, though, Mackie was smart enough to clarify his position at the earliest.
