Top 1980s and 1990s comedy writer-producer David W. Duclon, who created Punky Brewster and co-developed Silver Spoons, died Wednesday morning, January 15, after a long illness. He was 74.
Born Warren David Duclon in Rockford, Il, Duclon started his career as a writer on classic 1970s sitcoms such as The Odd Couple, Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley, The Jeffersons and Diff’rent Strokes.
His first writing credit was on a handful episodes of the The Odd Couple alongside Garry Marshall, who took him under his wing and taught him how to be a showrunner while Duclon worked on his hits Happy Days and spinoff Laverne & Shirley.
Over the next decade, Duclon went on to create a slew of sitcoms of his own. He developed CBS’ 1979 comedy Working Stiffs starring James Belushi and Michael Keaton; co-developed the 1982-debuting Silver Spoons, which ran on NBC for four seasons and another in first-run syndication; and...

What do you do when the last spinoff of your favorite Canadian sci-fi show ended ages ago and you've worn out your DVD box set rewatching it? If you're as obsessive as I am about my favorite franchises, you might just want to catch up with all the show's stars in their most recent projects. Luckily, when it comes to the cast of "Stargate Sg-1," there are plenty of great post-series movies and shows to choose from.
The long-running "Stargate" saga, based on Roland Emmerich's 1994 movie, has fizzled out a bit in recent years, due in part to apparently complicated rights issues. At its height, the franchise included several TV shows and movies, plus novels, comic books, games, and a web series. None of them were quite as beloved as "Stargate Sg-1," which was nominated for nine Emmys and kick-started the careers of several of its stars. Others involved...

Joe Egan, who co-founded Stealers Wheel with Gerry Rafferty and co-wrote and sang on the enduring hit “Stuck in the Middle with You,” died July 6. He was 77. The news was shared on the late Rafferty’s official Facebook page, but no details were provided.
“Very sad news that the other half of Stealers Wheel, Joe Egan, passed away peacefully yesterday afternoon with his nearest and dearest around him,” read the post on the page run by Rafferty’s daughter, Martha. “I will always remember him as a sweet and gentle soul. May he rest in peace.”
Egan — who originally dreamed of soccer stardom — and Rafferty met as teenagers at St. Mirin’s Academy in their hometown of Paisley, Scotland, and formed Stealers Wheel in the early 1970s. Their first two singles stiffed, but the third would become a rock and pop standard.

Remakes have always been and will always be a tricky proposition. You could have something as pure and wonderful as 1982’s The Thing, which is objectively better than the revered Howard Hawks and Christian Nyby version, but be trapped in purgatory for way too long before it is decided that its proper and loved. There’s a bunch that are better in different ways or at least thoroughly enjoyable in their own right like John Carpenter’s masterpiece, Philip Kaufman’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and of course David Cronenberg’s The Fly. While you can argue the horror vs sci fi merits of any of these movies, their quality can’t be disputed. When it comes down to what you can or can’t remake, I think the gloves are off at this point. There’s very few sacred cows left and sometimes a remake can help. Something...

1968's "Planet of the Apes" is one of the most legendary sci-fi movies in cinematic history. Co-written by Rod Serling of "The Twilight Zone" fame and directed by Franklin J. Schaffner, it spawned a franchise that is still going strong to this day.
It all started, however, with the story of astronauts landing on a mysterious planet filled with intelligent apes, only to discover that they were actually on Earth in the distant future. Led by Charlton Heston, the film boasted an incredible cast — not to mention some legendary practical makeup effects that helped bring the apes to life. Unfortunately, when a film is more than 50 years old, not many people from the cast are going to be around any longer. Luckily, a couple of key cast members are indeed still here to help keep the legacy alive.

Actor Danny Masterson’s wife, Bijou Phillips is fearful that, her husband may get killed in prison over his rape convictions, given their gravity. Married to Masterson for over 12 years, Philips has consistently refuted the rape claims.
Bijou Phillips has refused to accept the charges filed against her husband, calling him an “amazing father” who worked to “shield younger actors from temptation” in a letter begging a judge for leniency in his sentencing.
In the same letter, she has also expressed fear that her husband may get killed in prison, and is concerned for his safety.
In her letter obtained by the Daily Mail, the ‘Raising Hope’ actress claimed Masterson was a “life-saving” partner who dedicated himself to farming to support his family when the accusations about him started to emerge and he lost his acting career.

Joy is one of the funniest characters on My Name is Earl, and she’s played by a familiar actress with an impressive filmography. My Name is Earl revolves around Earl Hickey, a small-time crook who renounces his life of crime, writes down a list of all his wrongdoings, and sets out to make amends after he’s introduced to the concept of karma. Joy is Earl’s ex-wife who left him to marry Darnell, the busboy at the Crab Shack. In spite of Joy’s dismissive attitude towards Earl (and her tendency to call him “dummy”) they remained close friends – Earl even took the fall for Joy’s crimes.
In stark contrast with Earl’s mission to do good and Darnell’s kind nature, Joy is bad-tempered, ill-mannered, and obnoxious. Joy does have a deep capacity for love, seen in the care and affection she has for her two sons,...

Anthony Anderson is headed back to ABC.
The former Black-ish star will topline and be an executive producer of the network’s comedy pilot Public Defenders, from 20th Television and Wonderland Sound and Vision. His casting comes less than a year after Black-ish concluded its eight-season run, which netted Anderson six Emmy nominations for lead actor in a comedy series.
Additionally, Public Defenders, created by Eddie Quintana, has tapped Liz Astrof as showrunner and Randall Einhorn as director. Both will also serve as executive producers along with Quintana (Acapulco), Anderson, E. Brian Dobbins, and Wonderland Sound and Vision’s McG, Mary Viola and Corey Marsh.

Anthony Anderson is set to star in the ABC comedy pilot “Public Defenders,” Variety has learned. In addition, Liz Astrof has joined the pilot as showrunner while Randall Einhorn has signed on to direct.
The single-camera pilot, which was originally picked up at ABC in January, hails from writer Eddie Quintana.
The official logline states: “Up to their earholes in student loan debt, four inexperienced public defenders work tirelessly to keep their clients out of jail. Along the way, they have to rely on each other to navigate their first defendants, the absurd court system, and the copy machine that always jams.”
Anderson will star as Marshall, who is described as “always angry. Marshall is Catherine’s short fused boss. Unimpressed by her reluctance to take her clients to trial, the stern Marshall makes her shadow Efren, her cocky, trial-hungry office rival. Marshall has seen every kind of public defender come through his office,...

Scientology is often a sore subject in Hollywood. While it has its famous poster boy in Tom Cruise, some people are violently opposed to the church because of its allegedly shady dealings.
Several celebrities have stood with the church through it all. Others have left and spoken about their times in it. However, one popular early 2000s TV series had somewhat of a Scientology convention with multiple Scientologists starring in it.
‘My Name is Earl’ was about redemption
My Name is Earl follows a small-time thief who makes a long list of all the wrongs he has done. He seeks out anyone he has ever hurt to make amends. Earl gets the idea of turning his life around after getting hit by a car while celebrating his lottery ticket win.
He loses the ticket after the accident, but once he makes good on his promise to be a better person,...
