Leigh Whannell‘s Wolf Man soundtrack will infect vinyl on April 25 from Mutant.
The score is composed by Benjamin Wallfisch, who previously worked with Whannell on The Invisible Man in addition to scoring such heavy hitters as It, Blade Runner 2049, Shazam, and Alien: Romulus.
Priced at $30, the album is pressed on 140-gram colored vinyl exclusive to Mutant.
“Ben’s score evokes the lush classic sounds of the original 1940s movie,” Mutant previews. “It’s a beautifully light score featuring incredible orchestration, evoking the mystery within the woods. The score is scary and brutal but also delicate and human when necessary. It’s evocative and rich and helps add grounding to this very contemporary telling of this tale.”
The new take on the classic monster is in theaters now, and Wallfisch’s score is available on digital and streaming as of today.

Annually, Rotten Tomatoes hands out Golden Tomatoes to the best-reviewed movies and TV series from the past year.
Previous winners include Oppenheimer, The Last of Us, Top Gun: Maverick, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and House of the Dragon, but Dune: Part Two has reigned supreme this time.
Shōgun largely dominated the TV side, though there were noteworthy wins for both The Penguin and X-Men '97. Unfortunately, neither Deadpool & Wolverine nor Agatha All Along have received any love, even in the newly created "Fan Favorite Movies" category.
The winners and nominees are determined by an adjusted score formula, which is a weighted ranking that compensates for the variation in the number of reviews when comparing movies or TV shows within a specified time frame.
Critics have always had something of a complicated relationship with comic book adaptations, particularly in recent years. However, between this and other televised award shows, it's clear...

At the end of the day, it wasn’t as bad as expected. That’s the overriding sentiment among international distribution executives and other industry watchers regarding how 2024’s overseas and global box office panned out. Yes, we continue to need more consistency to foster the cinema-going habit, as well as more good movies that hit their mark, and Asia was soft for Hollywood while local product becomes more resonant there. But, the outlook is brighter as 2025 and beyond take shape.
First, let’s look at some stats. Overall, the international box office landed at an estimated $21.2 billion, per Gower Street Analytics. That’s 10% down versus 2023, and does not include China in the equation. As one international distribution exec asserts, “You have to back out China because China’s got such a disproportionate influence” on the total. This is true enough as China struggled in 2024 owing to economic concerns and...

Alien: Romulus Director Fede Álvarez Says Planned Sequel Will Take Franchise Into "Uncharted Waters"
Alien: Romulus was a significant success at the box office while also proving to be a big hit with critics, so it wasn't exactly a huge surprise when 20th Century Studios boss Steve Asbell confirmed that early plans are in pace for a sequel last year.
Though director Fede Álvarez still hasn't officially signed on to return, it sounds like it's close to being a done deal. During a new interview with Empire, the filmmaker confirmed that he is in the process of working on the sequel's script, and promises that the movie will take the classic sci-fi horror franchise "into uncharted waters."
“Rodo [Sayagues, co-writer] and I are working on that right now. We’re excited about where it can go. We’ve almost checked all of the boxes of things that I want to see [in Romulus], and brought back a lot of the things I hadn’t seen in a while.

On Wednesday, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts announced its 78th annual BAFTA Awards nominees, with expected contenders Anora, The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, and Emilia Pérez nominated for Best Film.
Conclave led all films with 12 nominations, including bids for Best Film, Best British Film, Best Director for Edward Berger, Best Adapted Screenplay for Peter Straughan, Best Actor for Ralph Fiennes, and Best Supporting Actress for Isabella Rossellini. It’s the second time BAFTA voters have widely embraced a Berger feature in three years after giving All Quiet on the Western Front 14 nominations in 2023.
In second, just behind the nominations leader, was Emilia Pérez. Netflix’s top contender landed 11 BAFTA Award nominations, including Best Film, Best Film Not in English Language, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay for Jacques Audiard, Best Actress for Karla Sofia Gascón, and Best Supporting Actress for Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldaña.

Director Fede Alvarez enjoyed success with Alien: Romulus, but says his planned sequel will show us “things you’ve never seen before.”
It’s fair to say that most people who went to see last year’s Alien: Romulus had a good time. The film’s audience score stands at a generally favourable 70 on Metacritic and the lure of a new Alien movie from a filmmaker fresh to the franchise drew in plenty of people. The film earned $350m at the box office and did so from a production budget of $80m, a smaller price tag than either of the Ridley Scott prequel films that preceded it.
This meant that the film had made a healthy profit for 20th Century Studios (and its owner Disney) by the time its theatrical run had ended, and as a result, Alvarez is now working on a sequel.

Alien: Romulus arrived in theaters last August, earning glowing reviews (it's "Certified Fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes at 80%) and an impressive $350 million at the worldwide box office.
The movie was widely considered a return to form for the long-running sci-fi/horro franchise and Hot Toys is going all in on the movie with another 1/6th scale figure. They revealed a terrifying Scored Xenomorph a couple of months ago and that's been followed by an eerily realistic take on Cailee Spaeny's (Civil War) Rain.
The likeness is extremely impressive and, given what a first fan-favourite the character has already become, we're not exactly shocked to see her get the Hot Toys treatment. Will any other characters follow? If so, David Jonsson's Andy will be high up on the wishlists of many Alien fans.
After all, both he and Rain are expected to return in Fede Alvarez's sequel. "Rodo [Sayagues, co-writer] and...

Director Fede Álvarez’s contribution to the Alien franchise, Alien: Romulus (you can read our review Here), was a success – so it was no surprise to hear, just a couple of months after the film’s theatrical release, that 20th Century Studios was working with Álvarez to develop a sequel to the film. Now, Álvarez has commented on the sequel, promising that it will take the Alien series into uncharted waters.
It has been said that the story Álvarez and co-writer Rodo Sayagues crafted for Alien: Romulus is not directly connected to the other films in the Alien franchise (which isn’t exactly true), but it’s not ignoring any of the other entries, either. Álvarez has been clear about the fact that his story takes place within the established franchise continuity. In fact, it slots right in between the events of Alien and Aliens. Fede Alvarez Says ‘Alien: Romulus’ Sequel Will Discover Things You’ve Never Seen from ‘Alien’ Before
The box office success of Alien: Romulus last year has given the franchise a fresh dose of new life, and director Fede Alvarez is currently hard at work on cracking a sequel.
Speaking with Empire Online this week, Alvarez provides an update on Alien: Romulus 2. “Rodo [Sayagues] and I are working on that right now,” Alvarez tells Empire.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) will announce its nominations on Wednesday, Jan. 15, casting a spotlight on an unpredictable awards season. This year’s nods come amid a somber backdrop as the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles have left communities grappling with loss. I’m sure the BAFTA’s announcement will mention the City of Angels and the first responders, the true heroes battling the blazes.
For the approximately 13,500 international members of BAFTA — representing a diverse range of disciplines across film and television — this year’s nominations serve as a cultural barometer, often influencing the Oscar race. With ballots for the Academy Awards due on Friday, Jan. 17, following its announced voting extension, BAFTA (who voted before the wildfires broke out) may provide a clearer picture of where AMPAS’ influential international voting bloc will likely land.

Fede Alvarez Wants To Try Something New With Alien Romulus Sequel: ‘We Can Go Into Uncharted Waters’
With Alien: Romulus, director Fede Alvarez aimed to make something that neatly slotted between Alien and Aliens – returning to the original two classics, while also liberally referencing everything from Alien: Resurrection and Prometheus, to the beloved Alien: Isolation video game. As a result, his film brought new characters and variations on the Alien mythology – but was all about capturing that legendary iconography anew.
If a Romulus sequel does happen, though, it seems Alvarez plans to go in the opposite direction – taking Alien somewhere more unexpected. “Rodo [Sayagues, co-writer] and I are working on that right now,” the filmmaker tells Empire. “We’re excited about where it can go. Though Alien: Romulus received a mostly positive response from critics and fans, one aspect of the movie that was met with almost universal backlash was the likeness of a deceased actor being used for a new character via VFX.
When Rain Carradine and her crew arrive on the derelict space station, they learn that the ship's android is still functional despite clearly being in very bad shape after a Xenomorph attack. They plug him in to discover what happened, and we see that the synthetic is the same model as Ash from Ridley Scott's original movie.
The late Ian Holm was "resurrected" (with permission from the actor's estate) to achieve this, but even setting aside the controversy surrounding the practice of "digital necromancy," the effects used to portray the character were... not the best.
Some shots looked okay, but for the majority of Rook's screen-time, his face basically...

Sonic The Hedgehog 3 Worldwide Box Office: Set To Beat It Ends With Us & Alien: Romulus (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is on track to sabotage not one but the global haul of two films soon. It is awfully close to surpassing the worldwide collections of It Ends With Us and Alien: Romulus. It has also beaten the critically acclaimed and financially successful animated feature of 2024, The Wild Robot. Keep scrolling for the deets.
It Ends With Us made a lot of news owing to the feud between Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni. It is still ongoing, but keeping the scandal aside, the film is a remarkable success as it had an estimated budget of $25 million and raked in a marvelous $350.99 million globally. Meanwhile, Alien: Romulus is also a box office success, which earned over $100 million in China. The worldwide collection of Fede Alvarez’s movie is $350.86 million.

‘Alien: Romulus’ Fixes Controversial CGI for Home Release, Director Promises: ‘It’s So Much Better'”
Director Fede Alvarez recently shared with ‘Empire Magazine’ that the digital recreation of the late actor Ian Holm, who portrayed the android Rook, was improved after the film’s theatrical release.
In ‘Alien: Romulus,’ Rook is a disembodied head from the same model of android as Holm’s character, Ash, from the original 1979 ‘Alien’ film. Since Holm passed away in 2020, the filmmakers got permission from his estate to use his likeness for this new android character.
The movie received various criticisms, with one of the main complaints being about the Rook character, especially the use of CGI. Many viewers found the digital effects less than convincing. Alvarez explained that, due to time constraints during post-production, the team wasn’t able to perfect the CGI in time for the movie’s theatrical release.

“Alien: Romulus” director Fede Álvarez said in an interview with Empire magazine that he understands why some viewers reacted negatively to the appearance of late actor Ian Holm in the film. Holm played the android Ash in Ridley Scott’s original “Alien” film and died in 2020 at 88 years old. The actor’s likeness was resurrected in “Romulus” via CGI for a new android character named Rook, but many viewers complained that Rook’s appearance was mostly bad visual effects that looked like a muddled Ian Holm deepfake. Álvarez would seem to agree.
“We just ran out of time in post-production to get it right,” the director admitted to Empire. “I wasn’t 100 percent happy with some of the shots, where you could feel a bit more the CG intervention. So, for people that react negatively, I don’t blame them.”

For fans of “Alien: Romulus” looking to watch from home, the controversial Ian Holm CGI has been corrected for folks awaiting the home entertainment release, director Fede Álvarez assured. He said it looks “way better” than what fans saw in theaters.
“We fixed it,” Álvarez told Empire in a recent interview, acknowledging that a lot of fans thought the film fumbled its CGI recreation of Holm, who reappeared in the film as android Rook, the same make and model of the iconic Ash in the original “Alien.”
Holm, however, died in 2020, and “Alien: Romulus” got permission from his widow to incorporate his likeness into the film using CGI technology.
Álvarez said the initial illusion was created through a “mix of techniques.”
“We made it better for the release right now … It’s way better,” Álvarez continued. “I convinced the studio we need to spend the money and make sure we...

Director Fede Álvarez’s contribution to the Alien franchise, Alien: Romulus (you can read our review Here), had only been in theatres for a matter of hours before it stirred up a SPOILERy controversy on social media. That’s because one of the film’s cast members has been dead for several years, so Álvarez and his collaborators decided to resurrect them with CGI… and the CGI wasn’t exactly convincing. Alien: Romulus has since made its way to home video – and if you have watched it in the comfort of your own home, you may have noticed that an attempt was made to fix that unconvincing CGI.
Of course, what we’re talking about here is the fact that the android character Rook was given the face of the late, great Ian Holm (with his estate’s permission), who played the android Ash in the original Alien.

After the original "Alien" in 1979, every subsequent film seems to have featured certain elements that immediately resulted in backlash among audiences. James Cameron's sequel was criticized for stripping away the horror and replacing it with dumbed-down action, while "Alien 3" represented fan discontentment on a grand scale by killing off beloved heroes Newt and Hicks ... before doing the same with its own leading lady, Ripley. Both of Ridley Scott's prequel films rubbed many viewers the wrong way, despite gaining more and more appreciators over the years, but it's safe to say that last year's "Alien: Romulus" was meant as a much-needed return to form.
In many ways, it did exactly that -- perhaps a little too well, as /Film's Chris Evangelista wrote about in his review -- but it also continued the franchise's grand tradition of alienating (pun most definitely intended) audiences with another divisive creative choice.

Creating a film as iconic as Alien: Romulus comes with its fair share of challenges, especially when it involves reimagining beloved characters. Director Fede Alvarez faced such a challenge with the introduction of Rook, an android based on Ian Holm’s Ash from the original Alien.

While the film captivated audiences, some fans were left questioning the character’s appearance. On the same topic, the filmmaker has recently opened up about the process of refining Rook for the home release. So, what changes did he make to improve the character’s look?
What made Fede Alvarez rethink Rook’s CGI in Alien: Romulus?
In Alien: Romulus, Fede Alvarez brought new life to the Alien franchise, mixing classic sci-fi elements with fresh ideas. One of the standout features of the movie was the android character Rook, who was brought to life through CGI.

The most controversial aspect of Fede Alvarez’s Alien: Romulus last year was the use of late actor/original Alien star Ian Holm’s likeness in the film, with the digitally resurrected Holm playing an android named Rook, the same model as his character Ash from Ridley Scott’s original classic. The effects work for the uncanny cameo, well, it left much to be desired.
Turns out, even Fede Alvarez wasn’t happy with how the digital necromancy in Alien: Romulus turned out. As he explains to Empire, the effects were retooled for the home video release.
“We just ran out of time in post-production to get it right,” Alvarez tells Empire. “I wasn’t 100 per cent happy with some of the shots, where you could feel a bit more the CG intervention. So, for people that react negatively, I don’t blame them.”

When Alien: Romulus arrived last summer, it brought cinema’s greatest sci-fi-horror franchise screaming into new life, chestbursting a new Xenomorph rampage onto the big screen. And for the most part, Fede Alvarez’s film – set between the events of Alien and Aliens – revelled in played around with the established iconography of the series so far, touching on everything from Prometheus to Alien: Resurrection, while also liberally paying homage to Ridley Scott and James Cameron’s classics.
Those callbacks didn’t always come without controversy – one surprise awaiting audiences was the arrival of android character Rook, given the face of the late, great Ian Holm (with his estate’s permission), who played nefarious ‘bot Ash in Scott’s original Alien. The result on screen, though, was somewhat uncanny – which became the subject of much discussion among fans. The Art Directors Guild has announced the nominees for its 29th Annual Excellence in Production Design Awards. Production design is all about worldbuilding, and so it’s fitting that the nominees are spread out by the kinds of worlds production designers are asked to create and the demands of their setting. The feature film nominee categories are amongst period settings, contemporary settings, and fantasy settings and the television shows are divided further by format between single-camera hourlong, half-hour, multicamera series, limited series, and TV movie, among others.
But the nominees themselves align with IndieWire’s predicted frontrunners for the Oscar category. “Dune: Part Two” and “Wicked,” among others, are nominated in the fantasy feature film category, while “The Brutalist,” and “Conclave” each received nominations in period feature and contemporary feature, respectively. On the TV side, “Shōgun” continues its conquest of guild nominations with one for period single-camera series, but “Squid Game,...

“The Substance,” “Conclave” and “Wicked” are among the films nominated by the Art Directors Guild (IATSE Local 800) for its 28th Excellence in Production Design Awards in motion pictures, television, commercial and music video categories.
The Adg divides live-action features into three categories: period feature film, fantasy feature film and contemporary feature film. “A Complete Unknown,” “The Brutalist,” “Gladiator II,” “Nosferatu” and “Saturday Night” were nominated in the period feature film category. In the fantasy film category, “Alien: Romulus, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, “Dune: Part Two,” “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” and “Wicked” all landed nods. “Civil War,” Conclave,” “Emilia Pérez” and “The Substance” and “Twisters” earned contemporary film nominations.
While it’s difficult to use the Adg winners as a precursor to the Academy Awards, last year’s winner “Poor Things” (Shona Heath and James Price) went on to win the Oscar. Previously, 2023 winners “Dune” (Patrice Vermette and Zsuzsanna Sipos) also won the Oscar for production design.

It’s not hyperbole to suggest that Robert Eggers has spent decades thinking about Nosferatu. In elementary school in New Hampshire, the filmmaker saw a picture of Max Schreck as Count Orlok in F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror and “lost my mind.” After he became obsessed with the film on VHS, a teenage Eggers directed a black-and-white stage version of Nosferatu, complete with actors painted in black and white. In 2016, after Eggers’ breakout film, The Witch, immediately made him a name to watch among cineastes, Eggers said he hoped to make Nosferatu his follow-up feature.
However, almost a decade passed before Eggers made Nosferatu. The wait has been worth it for the filmmaker and fans.
“The reaction has been pretty overwhelming. Even before the movie was released, it has just been a lot bigger than anything I’ve ever been involved with in terms of marketing,...

The Cinema Audio Society (Cas) has nominated the sound teams behind A Complete Unknown, Deadpool & Wolverine, Dune: Part Two, Gladiator II and Wicked in its live-action feature category for the 2025 Cas Awards celebrating excellence in sound mixing.
All five films have been Oscar shortlisted in the sound category, which since 2021 has encompassed both sound editing and mixing. The five additional shortlisted films are Alien: Romulus, Blitz, Emilia Pérez, Joker: Folie à Deux and The Wild Robot. The Cinema Audio Society announced nominations on Tuesday, Jan. 7, honoring the best in cinematic sound mixing. Nominees for live-action motion picture sound mixing are A Complete Unknown, Deadpool & Wolverine, Dune: Part Two, Gladiator II, and Wicked. That includes four of the top five contenders in Gold Derby’s current racetrack odds for Best Sound. Deadpool & Wolverine is the outlier, ranked 10th in our odds. Missing from the Cas nominations list were the Golden Globe-leading Emilia Pérez, as well as three other films shortlisted by the Motion Picture Academy: Blitz, Alien: Romulus, and Joker: Folie à Deux.

UK and Ireland box office takings in 2024 hold steady, but sequels dominate the top ten chart for the year. More here.
The official numbers are in for UK cinema takings in 2024, and for the second time since the first lockdowns of 2020, the total number eclipsed the £1bn mark. This is still a fair way down from the £1.35bn of 2019, but a fair way up from the £597m of 2021.
According to official numbers released by Comscore in the UK, the number of new cinema releases increased over 2023, from 1015 to 1114, and the number of what are declared ‘saturation’ releases (think: shedloads of screens) was up from 176 to 200 (higher even than 2019).
The total take in cinemas was a smidge down on 2023, falling around £3m, which in the grand scheme of things is negligible when the overall number is measured in billions. Very cautious optimism might even be allowed.
Furthermore, the official top ten...

The Golden Globes were, without a doubt, brimming with celebrities, but Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively weren’t among them. The pair didn’t walk the red carpet before sitting down for the ceremony that kicked off Hollywood’s awards show season. Why? It wasn’t reportedly the It’s Ends With Us legal drama.
Ryan Reynolds’ ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ was up for an award at the Golden Globes
The Golden Globes didn’t come with a Lively-Reynolds sighting despite Deadpool & Wolverine’s nomination. The movie, which brought together Reynolds and his longtime friend and The Wolverine star Hugh Jackman, received a Cinematic and Box Office Achievement nomination. Deadpool & Wolverine premiered on July 26, 2024. It quickly became the ninth movie to open to over $200 million (via Rotten Tomatoes).
