Exclusive: UTA has signed BAFTA-award-winning actress and writer Daisy May Cooper for representation in all areas.

Cooper first gained widespread recognition as the co-creator, writer, and star of the critically acclaimed BBC Three comedy series This Country. She received BAFTA Awards for Best Scripted Comedy and Best Female Comedy Performance for her portrayal of ‘Kerry Mucklowe.’

The mockumentary sitcom gives an inside look at rural life in a small English village in the Cotswolds through the lives of two cousins, one played by Cooper and the other by her brother Charlie Cooper who co-created the series. This Country ran for three seasons from 2017-2020.

Following This Country, Cooper starred in the BBC One/HBO dramedy series Rain Dogs. She led the cast in the role of ‘Costello,’ a single mother raising her daughter on the fringes of society attempting to go straight in a crooked world. The 2023 series also starred Jack Farthing,...

Emilia Clarke (“Game of Thrones”), Edgar Ramirez (“Emilia Perez”) and Jack Farthing (“Spencer”) will star in “Next Life” from writer-director Drake Doremus (“Like Crazy”), L.A. and London-based production and management company 42, Mutressa and Fetisoff Illusion have announced.

“Next Life” tells the love story of Ivy (Emilia Clarke), who finds herself confronted with parallel universes in which her life unspools in very different ways set against the modern London jazz scene.

Mutressa’s Elika Portnoy, Gleb Fetisov of Fetisoff Illusion and 42’s Ben Pugh and Kate Buckley are producing alongside Doremus. John Palfery Smith will also produce. Production is currently underway in London and set to wrap in late December. CAA Media Finance is representing worldwide rights.

Clarke is best known for her role as Daenerys Targaryen in the HBO award winning series “Game of Thrones,” for which she received four Emmy nominations and three Critics Choice Award nominations.

The Max Holiday 2024 collection That Time of Year is now live on the streaming service. The collection will serve as the hub for holiday content, showcasing an extensive selection of series, films, and more, guaranteed to bring joy and cheer to viewers during the festive season.

Max is celebrating the winter holidays with the “That Time of Year” collection, a special page featuring selected holiday films and series. The streamer’s also bringing back its special Yule log collection, with the 2024 selection including “World of Westeros Dragon Egg Yule Log,” “Harry Potter: Fireplace,” and “A Very Merry Rickmas Yule Log.”

2024’s been a tough year so holiday favorites Elf, A Christmas Story, and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation will help take our minds off the world. The first-ever Raintown Film Festival was successfully held at Paragon Cinema, Taiping Mall, from September 13 to 15, 2024. This three-day event brought local filmmakers and audiences together for a celebration of creativity, storytelling, and community. Aulong State Assemblyman Yb Teh Kok Lim attended the opening ceremony and praised the return of young talent to their hometown to help develop the creative industry. CAA has signed Cash Carraway, the Irish-English writer, director and exec producer best known for creating the HBO series “Rain Dogs.”

Carraway’s first TV production, “Rain Dogs” — a bleak British dramedy about an unconventional relationship between a working-class single mother, her young daughter and a privileged gay man — was met with critical acclaim when it aired in March 2023. The eight-part series starred Daisy May Cooper, Jack Farthing, Ronkẹ Adékoluẹjo and Fleur Tashjian, and later earned a Gotham Award nomination for best breakthrough series, while Carraway was named a BAFTA Breakthrough.

Prior to working in TV, Carraway wrote “Skint Estate,” a darkly comic memoir chronicling her life as a single mother navigating impoverishment, loneliness and violence in austerity Britain, which was published by Penguin Random House in 2019. An adaptation of Agatha Christie‘s mystery novel Towards Zero starring Anjelica Huston is in production, the BBC and BritBox International unveiled on Wednesday.

Oscar-winner Anjelica Huston has been cast in Towards Zero, potentially the highest-profile actor to appear in a BBC Christie series since John Malkovich played Poirot in 2018’s The ABC Murders.

Huston will play the aunt of lead character Nevile Strange (Oliver Jackson-Cohen). Nick Offerman became a first-time Independent Spirit Awards winner during the 2024 awards ceremony Sunday, winning for best supporting performance in a new scripted series for his role in The Last of Us.

If the expectation for holiday season programming is treacle and sentiment, Hulu’s new comedy Such Brave Girls is like a scorpion in your stocking.

In a good way.

Coming in just under the wire to cement creator-star Kat Sadler as one of the year’s breakthrough talents, Such Brave Girls is a hilarious slice of family dysfunction, focusing on a trio of women whose only connection is their trauma and, you know, shared DNA.

Especially in the first half of its six-episode run, it would be possible to reject Such Brave Girls as repetitively narcissistic, when the truth is that it’s more accurately a spin on a familiar type of British comedy, one populated by characters defined exclusively by their damage. It’s a genre in which the best examples are shows like Fleabag or Feel Good and the worst are lost to the cultural scrapheap.

“American Fiction,” “May December” and “Past Lives” shared the spotlight with five nominations apiece to lead the 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards announced Tuesday. The trio all landed bids for Best Feature along with “Passages,” “All of Us Strangers” and “We Grown Now.”

“American Fiction” was also cited for its screenplay (Cord Jefferson), for Jeffrey Wright’s lead performance and for Sterling K. Brown’s and Erika Alexander’s supporting work. “May December” also landed bids for Best Director (Todd Haynes) and Best First Screenplay (Sammy Burch) as well as for Natalie Portman’s lead performance and Charles Melton’s support. Film Independent announced the 2024 Spirit Award nominees in all the film and TV categories on Tuesday, Dec 5. Only American productions with budgets of less than $30 million were eligible for consideration in the film races. Winners will be revealed on Sunday, Feb. 25, 2024, at a ceremony hosted by Aidy Bryant.

Last year, these kudos eliminated the four gendered acting awards and replaced them with just two prizes: lead and supporting performances (each has 10 nominees). It also added a new category, Best Breakthrough Performance, which has five contenders.

A galaxy of 42 emerging creative talents from across the U.S., U.K. and India have been unveiled as the 2023 BAFTA Breakthrough cohort.

The selected talents have worked on some of the most lauded projects over the last several months including “The Last of Us,” “1923,” “Blue Jean,” “Rye Lane,” “Rocket Boys” and “Joyland.”

Breakthrough is BAFTA’s flagship new talent initiative in partnership with Netflix, drawn from creatives working in film, games and television. Awarded to those in the midst of, or on the cusp of their breakthrough moment, the year-long initiative includes one-to-one meetings and career guidance, full voting membership, access to BAFTA events and screenings, as well as networking events, both in the U.K. and internationally.

This year’s cohort comprises creatives spanning craft specialisms from hair and make up, production, editing and games design, to performance, directing and cinematography and is from diverse ethnic backgrounds and abilities.

The Gotham Awards traditionally mark the unofficial beginning of Oscar season, giving the best and brightest of the independent film community the chance to descend upon New York City to celebrate the year’s best works. And while the ceremony once again kicks off the awards calendar with its Monday after Thanksgiving slot, new changes to the eligibility rules means that a wider range of films will be allowed to compete this year

In the past, only films that cost $35 million or less were eligible for the awards, which inevitably shut out some of the biggest Oscar contenders in order to highlight smaller films. But that cap was eliminated in 2023, allowing major productions such as “Barbie” and “Ferrari” to get in on the action. A total of 20 films, 11 series, and 30 performances were nominated for this year’s awards.

The best in film and television was honored tonight at the 2023 Gotham Awards, which kicked off awards season with a bang!

Some of the biggest stars in the entertainment world were in attendance on Monday night (November 27) at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City.

In the past, the Gothams only celebrated independent films, but they have removed the requirement that all projects are made for under $35 million. Now, some of the contenders this year include big budget movies like Barbie.

The awards show also took away gendered acting categories, opting for an Outstanding Lead Performance category and an Outstanding Supporting Performance category with 10 nominees in each one.

“Past Lives” was the big winner at the Gotham Awards on Monday evening, taking home the top prize for best feature. “Anatomy of a Fall” won best international feature and best screenplay — both of the categories it was nominated in. Meanwhile, acting honors were won by Charles Melton for his supporting performance in Todd Haynes’ “May December” and Lily Gladstone for her lead performance in “The Unknown Country.”

The 2023 Gotham Awards nominations are here!

The nominees for the awards, presented annually to the makers of independent films at a ceremony in New York City, were revealed on Tuesday (October 24).

All Of Us Strangers by Andrew Haigh leads the nominees, as well as Celine Song’s Past Lives and Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest.

The ceremony removed a longstanding budget cap on eligibility, allowing big-budget studio and streamers to submit for consideration.

The 33rd annual event is set for November 27 at Cipriani New York, and will be honoring Maestro by Bradley Cooper, Air by Ben Affleck and Rustin, the upcoming film by George C. Wolfe, produced by President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground with tributes for the films and the individuals they portray.

Former BBC Studios exec Caroline Stone has joined the UK-branch of French film company Pathé, Pathé Productions, in the newly created role of commercial director.

Pathé said the appointment consolidates the expansion of its business in the UK into premium scripted television.

Stone was previously at BBC Studios Productions for 15 years, where she had a variety of roles including, since 2020, Commercial Director of Scripted where she helped Studios establish critical distribution partnerships with all the leading drama producers in the UK.

Sony Music Entertainment’s smash-hit interview podcast Out To Lunch is returning with a brand-new host, Ade Edmondson. He takes over from the previous host Jay Rayner. After breaking into the comedy circuit in the 1980s, Edmondson has starred in countless films and TV shows, including The Young Ones, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Rain Dogs and several projects alongside his wife, Jennifer Saunders.

Five Tom Waits albums released by Island Records in the 1980s and 90s are being reissued with fresh remasters.

The archival campaign kicks off on September 1st with 1983’s Swordfishtrombones, 1985’s Rain Dogs, and 1987’s Franks Wild Years. Reissues of 1992’s Bone Machine and 1993’s The Black Rider will follow on October 6th.

All of the albums have been newly remastered by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering under the guidance of Waits’ longtime audio engineer, Karl Derfler. According to a press release, Swordfishtrombones was sourced from the original Eq’ed ½” production master tapes, while Rain Dogs, Franks Wild Years, Bone Machine, and The Black Rider were sourced from the original ½” flat master tapes. Bellman remastered the audio in high resolution 192 kHz/24-bit.

The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself star Nadia Parkes is leading the BBC’s upcoming drama about the terrifying kidnapping of British model Chloe Ayling.

Parkes will portray Ayling in six-parter Kidnapped [working title], which was revealed by Deadline in April, and she is joined by Adrian Edmondson (Rain Dogs, A Spy Among Friends), Nigel Lindsay (The Capture, The Salisbury Poisonings), Olive Gray (Halo, Rose), Eleanor Romandini (The White Lotus, Il Nostro Generale), Julian Swiezewski (The Passing Bells, Krucjata) and Christine Tremarco (The Responder, Casualty). Further casting will be announced in due course.

Based on Ayling’s book, the series follows her abduction in Italy and subsequent bravery and resilience in captivity, followed by a court case that put her kidnappers in jail. When TV academy voters sit down to fill out their 2023 Emmy nominations ballots, they have to consider 95 shows for Best Comedy Series; this is down by 23 contenders from last year. After six years of there being no restrictions on the amount of entrants they could vote for, each member’s selections can now not exceed the number of eventual nominations in a given category, which, in this case, will be eight.

Reigning Best Comedy Series winner “Ted Lasso” is seeking a third consecutive victory, but five of its seven 2022 rivals can put a stop to its streak. Those previously nominated shows that also aired during the eligibility period of June 1, 2022 to May 31, 2023 are “Abbott Elementary,” “Barry,” “Only Murders in the Building,” “What We Do in the Shadows,” and 2018 champ “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” The two contenders from last year missing from this ballot because they did not return in time...

Though the CW is beginning to pivot much more heavily to reality fare, with “All American” as the only original scripted series on its fall 2023 lineup, the network has added three new scripted projects to its slate for 2024: “Joan,” “The Librarians: The Next Chapter” and “The Swarm.” Additionally, 2024 will see the premieres of unscripted series “Patti Stanger: Millionaire Matchmaking,” “The Force” and “The Great American Bakeover” (all working titles).

The CW announced two new scripted series that are in the works for 2024: Joan, a six-part co-production starring Game of Thrones‘ Sophie Turner, and The Librarians: The Next Chapter, a spinoff of fantasy adventure series from writer and executive producer Dean Devlin.

Haley Bennett (Cyrano, Swallow, The Girl On The Train) is set to lead Night and Day, Justine Waddell’s adaptation of Virginia Woolf’s novel, to be directed by BAFTA nominee Tina Gharavi (I Am Nasrine, Cleopatra: African Queens). WestEnd Films has boarded the the German-Irish-u.K. co-production and is introducing the project to buyers in Cannes.

Set in an era when glass ceilings were made of concrete, Bennett will play Katharine Hilbery — one woman who insisted on reaching for the stars. Based on what has been called Woolf’s funniest novel, Night and Day is described as an “unromantic comedy” about a passionate astronomer who does everything she can to avoid romantic love and marriage. Contemporary in tone, the story of Katharine’s bold challenge to the Edwardian patriarchy is set against the backdrop of the suffragette movement and advances in science and technology, at the turn of the 20th century.

High Desert is the story of Peggy Newman of Yucca Valley, California. If you have seen BBC One’s Rain Dogs, it will be easier for you to understand this comedy-drama that revolves around a woman who is trying to get by in life. She is middle-aged and single; she has just lost her mom, and the world is very harsh. It is an exploration of life and its ups and downs, or to be more appropriate, its highs and lows. From an illegal past to a legal present, Peggy has been through a lot. High Desert celebrates the chaos we call life and proves that it is not meant to be enjoyed; it is meant to be lived. But it’s better not to do drugs.

Fancy watching a no-nonsense Yorkshire cop on the brink of retirement finally taking down her nemesis? How about an Oxford scholar pitting his wits against a decades-long conspiracy? These are the premises for just two of the exciting British TV shows about to arrive in the US but that’s not all: there’s also globe-trotting sci-fi with big ideas, a fast-paced dark comedy, a remarkable depiction of marriage by two British acting stalwarts, and more besides.

From cosy crime to original comedy, here are the UK TV highlights coming to America:

Happy Valley Series 3

BBC America, Acorn TV, AMC+ – 22nd May at 10pm Et/Pt

Sally Wainwright’s excellent Yorkshire-based crime drama Happy Valley had been off UK screens since 2016, but returned for its highly-anticipated third and final series earlier this year.

The show centres on the straight-talking police sergeant Catherine Cawood, and her ongoing feud with the dangerous criminal Tommy Lee Royce.

“Rain Dogs” gives us two wonderful characters to look at. Costello Jones and Florian Selby are poles apart, especially emotionally, but their pain is their umbrella. They are easily two great characters in the study of human behavior and, more than that, of life itself. The fact is that we do not need words to describe them. The show makes us feel for them to the point where we end up replacing them with ourselves and wondering what we would have done had we been in their position. Their pain becomes ours, and so does their catharsis. The way the show ends does bring us to rest, but it also makes us wish we knew what would happen next. But do we really know what’s next for any of us? We don’t. And that’s exactly what “Rain Dogs” shows. Here’s more of Costello and Florian.

Only Florian will be able to calm her down, if not console her. Episode 8 of “Rain Dogs” is the season finale, and we find Costello at her most vulnerable. Will Florian be able to bring her back? Costello returns to her room and tells Iris that she has lost the book. Iris, the mature woman that she is, tells her mother that she needs to stop trying to be something all the time, as it is affecting both of them. Costello promises. Iris tells her to just try. The roles of mother and daughter seem to have been interchanged.

The biopic Chevalier features an accomplished cast as they tackle notorious real-life French historical figures. Chevalier follows the important yet historically suppressed story of renowned Black violinist and composer Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-George, who rose to prominence under the rule of Marie Antoinette in France. The movie explores Joseph’s life at the height of his fame and role in French high society, including his complicated friendship with Marie Antoinette, competition with contemporary composers, forbidden love affair, racism faced in French society, and political influence in the time leading up to the French Revolution.

While the positively-reviewed Chevalier stretches the truth for some of the movie’s notable plot points, the story is based on the real lives and history of characters like Joseph Bologne and Marie Antoinette in the late 18th century. After their refuge is destroyed, Costello and Iris have nowhere to go. The others leave for Skegness, but they choose to stay back in London. Florian is still at the mental facility in Bedlam, and there’s no telling when he will see them again. “Rain Dogs” Episode 7 takes our two women to a refuge at Sunset Park in Somerset. Costello and Lenny are inside an art exhibition hall. She has completed her book and managed to sell it to a guy named Barnaby, who contacted her after the stunt she pulled at the refuge, whose video has gone viral. However, she will not rejoice until she sees her book on sale. She then discreetly hangs one of Lenny’s self-portraits on a wall alongside the other paintings, and she, Iris, and Lenny escape before anyone can spot them.

Enormous critical acclaim is nice, I’m sure. It is, after all, what television writers and actors aspire to. But there’s also a joy in being a sleeper hit; a cult show that cruises under the radar but develops an obsessed following. Less glamorous, though, is programming that achieves middling commendations, medium admiration. Prime Video’s The Marvelous Mrs Maisel is in this latter category: good reviews, a smattering of Emmys, and decent audiences on Amazon’s streaming service can’t hide the fact that Amy Sherman Palladino’s late-1950s comedy-drama has always been a touch unloved. As the curtain comes down with its fifth and final series, is it time to reappraise one of the warmest, wittiest shows of recent years?

But the refuge doesn’t allow residents to work, which is a bummer for Costello. After all, she needs to pay for Iris’s school. “Rain Dogs” Episode 6 shows how Costello and Florian are making do in their respective surroundings. In one word, tolerating.

Had Cooper been revealed on the American Masked Singer in February, Jenny McCarthy probably would have been totally flummoxed. Cooper might have been familiar from a pair of Armando Iannucci projects — The Personal History of David Copperfield and Avenue 5 — but instead of This Country, an award-winning comedy she starred in and created with brother Charlie, we got U.S. remake Welcome to Flatch; and instead of the British smash hit Taskmaster, on which Cooper contributed to the 10th season, we got the American version of Taskmaster, which bombed in its lone Comedy Central season.

Dreamland, like the Margate amusement park it’s named after, wears its brashness on its sleeve. Three minutes into the Sky Atlantic comedy, which is based on Sharon Horgan’s award-winning 2017 short, viewers have already been exposed to inflatable penises, a cannibalistic bunny, and, erm, “perineum oil”. But beneath the slapstick and cotton-candy hues, dark family secrets are lurking. There’s also commentary on class and race dynamics in British seaside towns. All of these elements play out to varying levels of success, but you can’t fault Dreamland for trying. Everything it does, it does with gusto.

It’s Trish’s (former Doctor Who companion Freema Agyeman) baby shower and the entire house, from the crystals to the TikTok-inspired chicken drumsticks, is pink. Wide-eyed and manic, Trish is desperate for a baby girl – hence the “manifestival” – and her partner Spence (the ever-excellent Kiell Smith-Bynoe) is happy to go along with it.

Viewers of Netflix’s latest No 1 film Murder Mystery 2 have claimed there is a “hilarious” error in the film’s title.

Released on the streaming service last week, Murder Mystery 2 stars Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston as a married couple who become embroiled in a madcap criminal plot.

The story follows on loosely from the events of 2019’s Murder Mystery, which saw Sandler and Aniston’s characters solve a mystery aboard a billionaire’s yacht.

In the sequel, they travel to a private island, and become suspects in a high-profile kidnapping case.

However, while the story does in fact feature a murder, viewers have pointed out that the mystery itself revolves around a kidnapping – making the title something of a misnomer.
