Last month saw streaming platforms settle into their annual cozy season with new fall TV shows and autumn film favorites. This December, Hulu and Disney+ are hunkering down with premieres for several animated TV series, a solid selection of holiday fare, and feel-good movies both old and new.

Disney+ will bring its classic characters together for “Mickey and the Very Many Christmases” as well as “Disney Parks Magical Christmas Day Parade.” It will also premiere “The Simpsons Christmas Double Episode,” “Doctor Who: Joy to the World,” and “CMA Country Christmas” to honor the season. Top non-holiday picks include the return of “Marvel Animation’s What If…?” (kicking off December 22 with new episodes premiering daily for eight days), “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew,” and “Elton John: Never Too Late.”

Over at Hulu, the divisive new horror flick “Cuckoo” starring Hunter Schafer is set to stream alongside a robust catalogue of various other movies.

April is shaping up to be a huge month at Hulu! Catch the premiere of the Hulu Original series “Under the Bridge,” starring recent Oscar nominee Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), Riley Keough, and Vritika Gupta and based on the book of the same name by Rebecca Godfrey chronicling the 1997 murder of Reena Virk. Charlie Wright’s casting as Rodrick Heffley in the fourth live-action Diary of a Wimpy Kid film sparked the #NotMyRodrick meme, which the actor claimed had “ruined my career”. In a video about the incident that was uploaded on YouTube and TikTok on Sunday, the actor addressed the harsh criticism he received after playing Rodrick Heffley in what is considered to be his first public statement.

In the nine-minute clip, Wright talked about the negative reaction that followed the initial release of David Bowers’ Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul trailer in early 2017. This revelation has sparked outrage among fans, who are now calling for a much-needed change in the entertainment industry.

If you haven’t taken the leap to bundle Disney+ and Hulu, it might be time. Streaming is only getting more expensive and competitive, and the enticing bundle (which also includes ESPN) might be a version of cable TV, but it’s also just cost efficient. Disney+ and Hulu are so intertwined that their monthly listing updates come in the same email — and as such, we decided to compile them here for you in the same list.

Whether you have Disney+ or Hulu, or both (and the IndieWire staff has weighed on our favorites), each has its benefits. Disney has the family-friendly titles, the Star Wars and Marvel (new episodes of “The Bad Batch” and “X-Men: 97” continue through April), while Hulu is the place to catch FX originals and network episodes. Both streamers have the rights to distribute National Geographic titles, which are well worth exploring along with the rest of the library.

The month of April for Hulu is jam-packed with TV and film goodies, from Adam Sandler’s 1999 comedy “Big Daddy” to Fox’s hit sitcom “New Girl.”

On top of Hulu’s rollout of a new interface, it’s also adding some major film and TV titles to its platform. Some of the highlights that set off the first day of April include “American Psycho,” “Shrek” and its sequel “Shrek 2,” plus the Tim Story-directed “Think Like a Man.”

Anime series will be all the rage on Hulu with the dubbed version of the new popular series “Chainsaw Man” arriving, along with “Spy x Family” and “Black Clover.” If you’re looking for something a little bit more kid-friendly, the family can al enjoy “Despicable Me” and “Despicable 2,” “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days” and “Nanny McPhee.” For the lovers and heartless romantics, “Dear John” and “Date Night...

Hulu’s list of new releases for April 2023 don’t feature many blockbusters, but if we dig a little, I’m sure we can find some gems.

Perhaps the most promising items are on the TV side of things. Tiny Beautiful Things premieres on April 7 and stars Kathryn Hahn as “a floundering writer who becomes a revered advice columnist while her own life is falling apart.” That will be followed by comedy Am I Being Unreasonable? on April 11 and two documentaries: high school football story Algiers, America (April 19) and Tupac Shakur piece Dear Mama (April 22).

The best TV candidate this month, however, is probably Saint X on April 26. This series, told via multiple timelines, “explores and upends the girl-gone-missing genre as it explores how a young woman’s mysterious death during an idyllic Caribbean vacation creates a traumatic ripple effect that eventually pulls her surviving sister into a dangerous pursuit of the truth.

One of the most anticipated television releases of April is coming to Hulu on April 7. “Tiny Beautiful Things” stars Kathryn Hahn as troubled writer Clare. Ironically, she becomes a great advice columnist as her life falls apart. Her marriage is in trouble and her teen daughter hates her. Plus, her writing career is going nowhere. Even if you’ve signed up for every streaming service out there, it can feel monumental when a title moves from one to another. In April, Netflix mainstay “New Girl” moves to Hulu; still streaming, but not where fans are used to finding it — like rearranging the furniture in your apartment and waking up surprised every day that the couch is over there now.

But what’s important is that “New Girl” lives on, now joining Hulu’s own TV and movie library and originals from Freeform, FX, National Geographic, and more. Later in the month, Leila Gerstein’s “Saint X” — based on the novel by Alexis Schaitkin — premieres with three episodes, recounting the story of a young girl found dead during a family vacation and the sister piecing it together years later. It’s a new year and Disney+ is ringing in 2022 the say way it ushered out 2021: with lots of Boba.

That’s right, Disney+’s list of new releases for January 2022 is highlighted by The Book of Boba Fett. Though the series starring everyone’s favorite bounty hunter in Mandalorian armor (or maybe second favorite now after Din Djarin) first premiered in 2021, January 2022 is when it will air the majority of its seven episodes.

After that, however, there aren’t many Disney+ originals to speak of, aside from a new batch of The World According to Jeff Goldblum episodes. That’s alright though as arguably the biggest blockbuster on Disney+ this month is a recent theatrical release.

Un Gallo con Muchos Huevos translates into English as A Rooster with Many Eggs. Which doesn’t make any sense: roosters don’t have eggs or lay eggs; hens do that. But of course in Spanish, huevos is slang for “balls”… that is, testicles. So a fair transliteration of the title of this flick is A Rooster with Lots of Balls, or maybe just A Rooster with Balls. Which means that this CGI cartoon — in which the word huevos gets uttered a lot, and which features anthropomorphized eggs with arms and legs and faces and names — was intended to be one long dick joke. You know, for kids.

Emory Cohen (The Place Beyond the Pines, The Gambler) has joined Tye Sheridan (Mud, Joe) and Bel Powley (The Diary of A Teenage Girl) in the cast of writer-director Chris Smith’s (Get Santa) thriller Detour, which is now underway in South Africa.

Supporting cast on the film includes True Blood’s Stephen Moyer and newcomer Jared Abrahamson (Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days).

Sheridan will star as law student and all round good guy Harper who suspects his stepdad Vincent (Moyer) of causing the car crash that landed his mother in a coma.

Drowning his sorrows in a seedy La whisky bar, Harper ends up drinking with Johnny Ray (Cohen), a tough redneck who offers to “take care” of Vincent for a cool $20,000. Powley will play Ray’s beautiful but distant girlfriend.

WWE Studios has released the first trailer for their horror movie Leprechaun: Origins, which is a reboot of the original cult franchise. I've enjoyed the Leprechaun films that have been made over the years because of how absurd they were. I was especially entertained by the cheesy humor. The reboot seems to have ditched the humor aspect of the franchise and the filmmakers seem to be going for more scares this time around. As much as I enjoy horror films, this doesn't look that good to me.

"Leprechaun: Origins concerns two young couples who, while backpacking through the Irish countryside, 'quickly discover the idyllic land is not what it appears to be be when [a] town’s residents offer the hikers an old cabin at the edge of the woods. Leprechaun: Origins is the seventh film from this horror franchise, which began in 1993. This latest film will include wrestling superstar Dylan “Hornswoggle” Postl. The Leprechaun has the ultimate luck of the Irish, but those who cross his path have some of the worst luck in the world, for they’ll be lucky to survive his wrath. The horror franchise that began in 1993 will be reborn late this summer with Leprechaun: Origins. The first full-length trailer for the film doesn’t give us a good look at the Leprechaun, but it does feature his potential victims.

This time around the Leprechaun is portrayed by WWE Superstar Dylan “Hornswoggle” Postl. The Solution Entertainment Group will handle international rights to Emmy-Award nominated writer Maya Forbes’ directorial debut Infinitely Polar Bear starring Oscar nominee Mark Ruffalo (The Kids Are Alright) and Zoe Saldana (Star Trek), it was announced today by The Solution Entertainment Group’s (“The Solution”) founders and partners, Lisa Wilson and Myles Nestel.

The film will make its world premiere at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival in the U.S. Dramatic section. ICM Partners will be handling Us rights.

The film is produced by Emmy-winning Wally Wolodarsky along with Paper Street Films’ Benji Kohn and Bingo Gubelmann (Happythankyoumoreplease) and Park Pictures’ Sam Bisbee and Galt Niederhoffer (Robot & Frank).
