Flying Lotus has directed the experimental comedy Kuso and the Ozzy’s Dungeon segment of the horror anthology V/H/S/99, and next up for the rapper and filmmaker (who is a.k.a. Steven Ellison) is the sci-fi thriller Ash, starring Eiza González (Baby Driver) and Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad). When González and Paul were cast in the film, Flying Lotus released a statement saying, “We are building something fresh and unique with Ash and having Eiza and Aaron in this world just makes it flames. They are absolute magic makers, brave and equally inspiring. All that to say… We ‘bout to kill this.” We won’t have to wait much longer to see how well they did kill it, as Rlje Films will be giving Ash a nationwide theatrical release on March 21st – and in anticipation of that release, a teaser trailer and a teaser poster have been unveiled. The found footage horror anthology series V/H/S was launched in 2012, with the sequels V/H/S/2 and V/H/S: Viral following in 2013 and 2014. There was a spin-off called SiREN in 2016, then the franchise went dormant for a few years… before being revived by the Shudder streaming service, which has had great success delivering a new V/H/S movie every year. There was V/H/S/94 in 2021, V/H/S/99 in 2022, V/H/S/85 in 2023, and V/H/S/Beyond earlier this month. There will be no lack of V/H/S next year, as our friends at Bloody Disgusting has confirmed that Shudder officially announced during the New York Comic Con that V/H/S/8 is in the works and will be receiving a 2025 release. No further details have been revealed.

"What happened here?" Rlje Films has revealed a first look teaser for Ash, the next cinema project from acclaimed musician / filmmaker Flying Lotus. It's his latest feature since making the experimental Kuso film in 2017, along with a short film in the V/H/S/99 anthology. A woman wakes up on a distant planet and finds the crew of her space station viciously killed. Her investigation into what happened sets in motion a terrifying chain of events. Apparently this is less experimental and more "contained" than Kuso, with a full-on production budget. He shot it down in Nz: "People go to New Zealand to shoot sci-fi and fantasy movies, so I was [working with] all these people who worked on The Lord of the Rings and other Peter Jackson and James Cameron stuff." Ash stars Eiza González, Aaron Paul, Iko Uwais, Kate Elliott, Beulah Koale, and Flying Lotus himself. Whoa this looks rad! Hell yes!

Now streaming on Shudder is V/H/S/Beyond, which pushes the popular anthology franchise firmly into sci-fi territory with new bloodcurdling tapes that explore everything from aliens to horrific science experiments run amok. Among them is Justin Martinez’s high-octane skydiving horror segment with an alien twist, “Live and Let Dive.”
Martinez, one of the founders of the filmmaking collective known as Radio Silence, has been with the franchise since the start, having co-directed and handled VFX on the segment “10/31/98” on V/H/S. The filmmaker/VFX artist lent his VFX talents to the last three entries of the franchise and served as VFX supervisor on V/H/S/85 and V/H/S/99. For V/H/S/Beyond, Martinez conceived of his intense segment’s story with writer Ben Turner and makes his solo V/H/S directorial debut, putting his VFX and anthology experience to thrilling use.

Any horror franchise that sticks around for more than a handful of entries becomes an institution by default. And few long-running horror franchises have provided genre fans with such a rollercoaster as "V/H/S," perhaps because each movie in the series feels like an unpredictable theme park ride in its own sick, twisted, ambitious way.
The first "V/H/S" film, released in 2012, laid out the endlessly adaptable format: a horror anthology consisting of "found footage" shorts, each of them directed by a different filmmaker, with only a thin (if that) thread connecting them all. Really, each "V/H/S" segment is an excuse for a director to cut loose, to run wild, and to tell a brisk, violent, sometimes funny and sometimes disturbing tale of terror. The only real rule is that it has to be found footage, but even that is malleable. Stories in the series are told from camcorders, GoPros,...

In my opinion, the "V/H/S" franchise has been consistently worthwhile ever since the first installment dropped in 2012. A horror anthology loosely based around the idea of found footage captured and/or broadcast on analog devices, the series eventually abandoned its attempts at building a sense of mythology and lore and focused on the real appeal of the franchise, which is acting as a showcase for a mixture of up-and-coming as well as established filmmakers in the indie horror world. Sure, its nature as an anthology means that not every segment is going to be everyone's bucket o' blood, and some installments have more duds than bangers. Yet I've found at least one segment in each "V/H/S" film to adore, and in most cases have found several.

The first "V/H/S" movie was released in 2012, which was actually four full years before the last manufacturers of VCRs, Funai Electric, finally halted production on the medium.
VHS was, for those of a certain age, a seminal and ubiquitous technology. Prior to VHS, the only way to see certain cinematic classics was either to go to a repertory theater (which used to be far more common) and see it on the big screen (requiring a well-curated arthouse in your town) or to wait for something to broadcast on network TV (which was often edited for content or time). At the start of last year, former DC Films boss Walter Hamada signed a first-look deal with Paramount Pictures, the idea being that he would become, as Deadline put it, “the architect of Paramount’s mainstream horror genre pod, with the mission to release several low- to mid-budget films per year across theatrical and streaming.” Now Deadline has an update on Hamada’s horror-minded efforts at Paramount, as they’re reporting that the studio has given the greenlight to the Hamada-produced horror film Primate, which has Oscar-winner Troy Kotsur attached to star.
Kotsur won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the film Coda, becoming the first deaf male actor and only the second deaf actor overall to win an Oscar. Kotsur’s other credits include Wild Prairie Rose, No Ordinary Hero, Universal Signs, The Number 23, and episodes of Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Mandalorian, Criminal Minds,...

Be kind, rewind: the "V/H/S" franchise will return this Halloween season, with a new line-up of talent bringing six new segments to the screen. This latest film, titled "V/H/S/Beyond," will change things up a little bit by bringing sci-fi into the horror mix. Per Variety, the film "will feature six new bloodcurdling tapes, placing horror at the forefront of a sci-fi-inspired hellscape." If that wasn't enough to get you excited, maybe the folks involved will be. Perhaps most prominent among the list of names involved with this new entry is Mike Flanagan, the modern horror master whose credits include "The Haunting of Hill House," "Doctor Sleep," "Oculus," and the most recent "The Fall of the House of Usher." Flanagan isn't directing, though — instead, he wrote a segment that will be helmed by his wife Kate Siegel, who has appeared in the majority of Flanagan's films and TV shows.

Exclusive: After six years as a manager at More/Medavoy, Stephen Belden is going it alone, having launched his own management and production company, Death Wish Entertainment.
“The dream,” Belden said, “has always been to work with a core group of clients that I absolutely adore as artists and as human beings and to be able to produce projects with and for those clients. With this company I get to focus on exactly that and I couldn’t be more excited.”
Belden explained that the name Death Wish is “a tongue-in-cheek nod to the fact that it’s harder than ever to be working in the entertainment industry right now,” underscoring at the same time that he “couldn’t be more optimistic about what the future holds for the up and coming generation of actors, writers, directors, and producers that I work with.”
Additionally, he expressed his gratitude to those at his former company.

Exclusive: In the biggest acquisition to emerge so far at the nascent EFM, we understand Amazon Prime Video has sewn up a deal with XYZ for international rights to Eiza González (Baby Driver) and Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad) sci-fi thriller Ash, the sophomore feature from producer, rapper and filmmaker Flying Lotus (Kuso).
We hear this is a high-seven figure pact, nearing $10M. Talks had been underway for a little while and the deal closed up this week.
Gonzalez will play a woman who wakes up on a distant planet and finds the crew of her space station viciously killed. She must decide whether she can trust the man (Paul) sent to rescue her. Iko Uwais, Beulah Koale, and Kate Elliott also star. The movie is in post-production.
As we previously revealed, Flying Lotus is composing an original score for the movie, which is based on an original screenplay by Jonni Remmler.

The new film “It’s a Wonderful Knife,” written by Michael Kennedy (“Freaky”) and directed by Tyler MacIntyre (“Tragedy Girls;” “V/H/S/99”) falls into numerous genres: slasher, comedy, holiday and even LGBTQ+.
It’s no surprise that Kennedy and MacIntyre drew upon some obvious — and not-so-obvious — inspirations for the festive and frightening feature. TheWrap caught up with Kennedy and MacIntyre to talk all things “It’s a Wonderful Knife.”
The obvious inspiration for the film — which finds a young woman (Jane Widdop) transported to a world where she never existed on the eve of Christmas — is “It’s a Wonderful Life.” What is your connection to the classic?

The Hallmark Channel has turned the holiday season – specifically, the months-long Christmas season – into an incredibly lucrative all-year affair. Numbers-wise, Lifetime Channel isn’t too far behind. Both rely on formulaic plots, inexpensive, fungible talent on both sides of the digital camera and enough snow, real and otherwise, to blanket small countries. They’re also not-so-clever advertisements for the relentless consumerism that has defined late-stage capitalism, making them easy targets for satire or parody. Add a slasher motivated by a combination of bloodlust and unfettered greed and the result looks, sounds, and feels like writer Michael Kennedy (Freaky) and director Tyler MacIntyre’s holiday slasher, It’s a Wonderful Knife. True to the punny title, It’s a Wonderful Knife borrows plot...

The heart of the canon of Christmas horror movies is growing three sizes this year thanks to "It's a Wonderful Knife," the yuletide slasher from "Tragedy Girls" and "V/H/S/99" director Tyler MacIntyre and "Freaky" screenwriter Michael Kennedy. I've been working in this industry for quite some time, and MacIntyre and Kennedy are two people I've been privileged to get to know over the years. Both are responsible for two of my favorite horror films of the last decade, so seeing them join forces for a holiday horror flick has reignited my belief in Santa Claus, because he certainly got my letter. The new film tells the story of Winnie Carruthers (Jane Widdop), who, one year after becoming a final girl and saving the town of Angel Falls from a psychotic killer on Christmas Eve, wishes she was never born and wakes up in a parallel universe where she doesn't exist...

V/H/S/85, the latest entry in the found footage horror anthology V/H/S/ franchise, will begin streaming on Shudder service (which previously had great success with V/H/S/94 and V/H/S/99) tomorrow, October 6th. This one consists of segments that were directed by David Bruckner (Hellraiser 2022), Scott Derrickson (The Black Phone), Gigi Saul Guerrero (Bingo Hell), Natasha Kermani (Lucky), and Mike P. Nelson (the Wrong Turn reboot) – and during an interview with ComicBook.com, Derrickson revealed that his segment is set in the same universe as The Black Phone! It even includes references to some Black Phone characters…
Derrickson said, “Oh, there’s actually a universe crossover in there, which I guess I made it too subtle because nobody’s picking it up. But James Ransone tells Detective Wayne, when he’s behind the glass, he was talking about Gunther. He says, ‘He has these dreams that are prophetic.’ And he says, ‘My sister had the same gift.

Ah, 1985. A time of big hair, even bigger shoulder pads, and the rise of the Vcr. It was only inevitable that all those mullet-sporting dads that insisted on bringing the camcorder with them on every trip would eventually record something horrifying (and we’re not talking about your elementary school pageant show). V/H/S/85 brings that analog terror to life in the newest installment of the now annual horror anthology. Happy Halloween y’all. It’s Found Footage time!
Kicking this macabre mixtape of horrors off is David Bruckner’s Total Copy, serving as a loose wraparound story, and presented as a taped-off-tv documentary about a mysterious entity that is being fed an abundance of media to better understand humanity. The most exciting thing about the "V/H/S" films is that, six entries in, the found footage horror anthology series still has the capacity to truly surprise. Less of a cohesive universe and more of a sandbox for various directors to throw their wildest, silliest, gnarliest, and scariest ideas at the wall to see what sticks, the franchise has proven consistent in its inconsistency. An entry that is chock-full of bangers from filmmakers firing on all cylinders will be followed by a film where a few too many segments feels a bit half-assed -- the dip in quality from the largely stellar "V/H/S/94" to the largely undercooked "V/H/S/99" comes to mind.
But as long-suffering horror fans know, there's a joy in watching a long-running series bounce back. And "V/H/S/85" is one of the franchise's strongest bouncebacks yet: there's not a single bad segment to be found, and each story feels fueled by ambition,...

"Where did you get those tapes?!" Shudder + Bloody Disgusting have revealed the main official trailer for V/H/S/85, the next film in this found footage anthology series. It's now the fifth one - V/H/S/99 debuted just last year (also on Shudder now). As expected, V/H/S/85 (#5) is premiering at Fantastic Fest in TX this week before streaming in October. "Get ready for a found footage compilation of disembowelment, clubbing, and dismemberment, just to name a few of the grisly deaths. It’s Reaganomics and imperial disillusionment in the way that only the V/H/S movies can do them — with the fake blood hose nozzle cranked up to the soak setting." Featuring new segments made by the horror filmmakers: Mike P. Nelson, Natasha Kermani, Gigi Saul Guerrero, Scott Derrickson, David Bruckner. The Tron-themed one looks bonkers. Found footage horror fans rejoice, as another installment in the long-running "V/H/S" franchise is just around the corner, and we've got a new trailer showcasing the '80s goods coming our way this Halloween season. That's right! The franchise is taking a trip back in time with "V/H/S/85" which, as the title implies, will be set right in the heart of the 1980s, when home video was just beginning to revolutionize the movie industry and slasher films were dominating the landscape.
The latest entry in the horror anthology series, which is following in the footsteps of last year's "V/H/S/99," is set to screen at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas this week, but it's going to be debuting on Shudder early next month, making it easily accessible for your spooky season viewing needs. So, what horrors are contained within this collection of throwback '80s shorts? Let's have a look-see.

"Why don't you just tell us where you got these video tapes from?" Back for even more scary shenanigans! Shudder has revealed the first teaser trailer for V/H/S/85, Bloody Disgusting's next iteration of this found footage anthology series. This is now the fifth film in the ongoing franchise - and V/H/S/99 debuted last year (it's also on Shudder now). As expected, V/H/S/85 (#5) is premiering at the iconic Fantastic Fest in Austin, TX this fall - before it's out for streaming in October. "Get ready for a found footage compilation of disembowelment, clubbing, and dismemberment, just to name a few of the grisly deaths. It’s Reaganomics and imperial disillusionment in the way that only the V/H/S movies can do them — with the fake blood hose nozzle cranked up to the soak setting." Featuring new segments made by directors: Mike P. Nelson, Natasha Kermani, Gigi Saul Guerrero, Scott Derrickson, plus David Bruckner.

The "V/H/S" franchise is back once again with another installment this year, bringing more found footage spooky goodness to 2023's Halloween season. This time around, "V/H/S/85" will bring the long-running anthology series to the 1980s when slasher movies reigned supreme and the home video market was just beginning to explode. And the folks at Shudder have put together an absolute murderer's row of directing talent to handle the various segments, including "The Black Phone" and "Sinister" filmmaker Scott Derrickson, among others.
Dating back to 2012, the "V/H/S" films have been a bit of a mixed bag (as anthologies often are) with extremely high highs to disappointingly low lows. But after taking a pretty long break they have become something of an annual tradition again, with "V/H/S/94" arriving in 2021, and "V/H/S/99" following in 2022. Now, it's all aboard the '80s nostalgia train. Let's see what that looks like, shall we?

Anthology films in horror are nothing new. Decades ago, there were examples like “Tales From the Crypt,” “Trilogy of Terror,” and of course, “Creepshow.” However, in recent years, the most recognizable horror anthology franchise is none other than “V/H/S.” And just in time for Halloween, Shudder has a new one coming, titled “V/H/S/85.”

“The iconic found footage series returns with an array of explosive, bloody scares set in a decade obsessed with serial killers and the Satanic Panic,” writes Fantastic Fest of the film which says goodbye to the nostalgic neon lights and hello to the grit and grime of the ’80s.
V/H/S/85 joins our growing franchise that now consists of several films, including V/H/S, V/H/S/2, V/H/S: Viral, V/H/S/94, V/H/S/99, and the spinoff feature SiREN.
Here are the directors who took part in 85…
The only legacy filmmaker is David Bruckner, who will be spearheading the latest entry. Bruckner directed the “Amateur Night” segment of the first V/H/S which featured the breakout performance of Hannah Fierman as a succubus.

Flying Lotus (aka Steven Ellison) has already made a name for himself in the music business as a Grammy Award-winning rapper, producer, and composer. But the multi-hyphenate dabbles in film production, too, like his 2017 feature debut “Kuso,” which had its world premiere at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival. There’s also his installment in the “V/H/S/99” horror anthology from last year, which he wrote, directed, and scored himself.
