It hardly needs mentioning, but not all science fiction is created equal. Even as a term, it’s difficult to pinpoint exactly what constitutes sci-fi, especially in a medium like TV that can change so much from week to week or season to season. So when we took stock of the best TV shows from the past two decades, we tried to take a hard line separating the sci-fi from the fantasy.
That’s not to say that a few of the shows might have an odd sword or two, but most of what we tried to single out here imagines a world markedly different from our own. Some take place in reimagined futures, while others take a sharper focus on the present with some key, otherworldly changes.

During their Consumer Electronics Show (CES) presentation last night, Naughty Dog head Neil Druckmann officially announced that The Last of Us season two will debut this coming April, exclusively on HBO and streaming on Max.
The second season will consist of seven episodes, and while we don't have an exact premiere date just yet, we'd imagine the series returns sometime in mid-April, in the same release window Game of Thrones used to occupy during its run.
Season two will pick up five years after the events of season one, which concluded with Joel (Pedro Pascal) going on a rampage to rescue an unconcious Ellie (Belly Ramsey) from the Fireflies and then, in an effort to protect her, covering up the truth by telling her that making a cure was impossible and that raiders had raided the facility and forced them to flee.

Neil Druckmann, the creative mind behind The Last of Us and Uncharted, has set his sights on space with Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. According to Druckmann, the game is a new sci-fi adventure that ambitiously centers on a fictitious religion.
We’ve seen this before in many other games. | Image Credit: Naughty Dog
Touted as an “ambitious” exploration of faith and institutional belief systems, the game aims to tackle profound themes within a retro-futuristic, anime-inspired world. But the concept of using religion as a central plot device isn’t that groundbreaking. Games like Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry 5, Blasphemous, and more have already done this. So how will Intergalactic be different?

/Film has proudly declared the FX mini-series "Say Nothing" some of 2024's best TV, and I could not agree more. Based on an acclaimed non-fiction book by Patrick Radden Keefe, "Say Nothing" is (as the book is subtitled) a "True History of Memory and Murder in Northern Ireland." The story chronicles a half-century of political dissent, threaded through the disappearance and murder of single mother (and alleged British informant) Jean McConville. The two characters we most follow through that thread are Dolours and Marian Price, two sisters inspired to join the Irish Republican Army (Ira) by the failures of peaceful protest and their family's long association with the organization.
Quick history lesson: in 1921, Ireland was partitioned between the 26 free counties and the six Northern counties that remained under British rule. With a majority population of Protestant Unionists, these counties would seemingly never have a popular majority to secede. The Catholic Republicans in Northern Ireland,...

The 100 is an entertaining yet frustrating sci-fi show that includes several points throughout its seven-season run where audiences have debated quitting the show altogether. The CW show ran longer than it should have. Still, it contains a fascinating exploration of humanity and the morals of its main characters, which gets tested with each season's unique antagonist figures. However, this means many of The 100's characters are "ruined" through decisions and arcs that appear to come out of nowhere. This often leads to a complicated and unpredictable, exciting and irritating show.
The 100 takes place in a post-apocalyptic world, with its main characters being juvenile delinquents sent to Earth to determine its habitability. While on Earth, the core group of characters encounters other survivors, leading to some gripping conflict in each season. Stephen King‘s novel The Institute (which can be purchased Here) reached store shelves on September 10, 2019 – and that same day, it was announced that David Kelley and Jack Bender, the duo behind the King series adaptation Mr. Mercedes, were working on a limited series adaptation of The Institute. Five years have gone since then and Kelley has dropped off the project along the way, but The Institute is moving forward at MGM+ – and Variety reports that a trailer for the show was screened at Content London on Thursday. Michael Wright, the head of MGM+, director / executive producer Jack Bender, and creator / executive producer Benjamin Cavell were also in attendance to talk about the show, including the decision to age up the characters for the adaptation and the story’s connection to The Shining.

Sarah J. Maas' stories are brimming with content that would make for excellent television adaptations, and her A Court of Thorns and Roses was picked up by Hulu — though the adaptation's prospects look grim after it was taken out of active development and lost its showrunner earlier this year. The complex world-building and dynamic characters found throughout Maas' books provide great foundations for on-screen adaptations. Many are hoping Hulu's Court of Thorns and Roses TV show will still happen, but another forgotten Maas adaptation should have been first.
Throne of Glass is Maas' first fantasy series, and while it starts off less mature than Acotar, it's a beloved part of the author's lineup. All seven Throne of Glass books would serve as a great introduction to the various fantasy worlds Maas has built, but Hulu's initial attempt to adapt the series went nowhere. Bellamy Blake was introduced in season 1 of The 100 and went on a long and treacherous journey over seven seasons until he died right before the series finale. Bob Morley played Bellamy from the pilot until season 7, episode 13, and where he started as a character and where he ended up were two very different people. In season 1, he was selfish and arrogant, while his season 7 self was being brainwashed by a religious military group. But the final season also threw Bellamy's character development out the window, leading to some viewers disagreeing with his ending.
Taking into consideration that The 100 was a post-apocalyptic science fiction television series, characters were more likely to die in this universe than on any other show. They faced danger in every episode as they navigated environmental and human threats while also being controversial and questionable people themselves. As a result, plenty of characters died throughout The 100's seven seasons.

From 2014 to 2020, The 100 captivated audiences with its vast ensemble of brave and morally gray characters, yet some members of The 100's cast stand out far more than others. The 100 is a sci-fi adventure show that aired on The CW for seven seasons. Based on a novel of the same name by Kass Morgan, The 100 follows a group of 100 teenage criminals who are sent to Earth hundreds of years after a nuclear disaster to test how habitable the planet is. The teens soon discover the blessings and curses of the world they left behind.
A major element of The 100 is its big cast. From the start, audiences are introduced to several teenagers, each of whom has their own unique past. What do you do when the last spinoff of your favorite Canadian sci-fi show ended ages ago and you've worn out your DVD box set rewatching it? If you're as obsessive as I am about my favorite franchises, you might just want to catch up with all the show's stars in their most recent projects. Luckily, when it comes to the cast of "Stargate Sg-1," there are plenty of great post-series movies and shows to choose from.
The long-running "Stargate" saga, based on Roland Emmerich's 1994 movie, has fizzled out a bit in recent years, due in part to apparently complicated rights issues. At its height, the franchise included several TV shows and movies, plus novels, comic books, games, and a web series. None of them were quite as beloved as "Stargate Sg-1," which was nominated for nine Emmys and kick-started the careers of several of its stars. Others involved...

The appeal of sci-fi shows like Black Mirror, Dark, and Station Eleven, some of the best dystopian sci-fi TV shows, is that they explore human truths using the context of technological advancement. From body modifications to time travel, sci-fi presents the dream of breaking boundaries that physics and biology impose on us, and uses that context to confront viewers with questions about the nature of humanity. While some shows like Star Trek have such a legacy that they're not only always remembered but consistently rebooted, some equally great shows have a more unfortunate fate.
The problem of relying on viewership per season led to recent sci-fi shows getting canceled that didn't deserve it. Shows like The 100 which have aired for years provide a rich collection of compelling storylines and complex conundrums, but with rampant cancelations, shows rarely have the prospect of doing that anymore. It's a high-risk, high-reward gamble these days.

The CW Layoffs: Scripted Chief Liz Wise Lyall & Unscripted Deputy Betsy Slenzak Among Execs Impacted
The fallout around The CW’s layoffs is starting to emerge.
Deadline understands that scripted boss Liz Wise Lyall and Betsy Slenzak, who is the second in command in terms of unscripted programming, are among those affected.
Earlier today, Deadline revealed that the Nexstar-owned network cut around 35 people, a move that newly installed President Brad Schwartz called “one of the hardest decisions a company can make”.
Wise Lyall was SVP, Scripted Programming, essentially the company’s head of scripted content, overseeing current programming and development including international co-productions (such as its recent ITV co-pro Joan). She has been with The CW for over 14 years, having joined in 2010 from Lifetime. She has worked on series such as Riverdale, The Flash, Arrow and The 100.
She took over both current and development last year.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe came back in a big way in 2024, and after complaints that superhero fatigue was tanking the world’s highest-grossing franchise, it seems all we needed was a bit of camp to bring things back around. Despite the lauded legacy of Jac Schaeffer’s WandaVision, the idea of focusing an entire spinoff on Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha Harkness seemed like a gamble. Boasting a diverse cast of LGBTQ+ actors and promises from Aubrey Plaza (Aubrey Plaza) that it would be a "gay explosion" meant that fans had to deal with the usual cries that the MCU has gone ‘woke.’
Thankfully, while The Marvels felt the wrath of those unable to handle a movie led by women, Agatha All Along has defied expectations. From debuting one of the most important gay characters from Marvel Comics to giving us the MCU’s first lesbian kiss, Agatha All Along did...

One of the fun knock-on effects about setting a story in a completely invented fantasy world is that you get to create, if you want, a new map for your new geography. J.R.R. Tolkien's maps of Middle-earth from his Lord of the Rings trilogy are very well-known. The opening credits to Game of Thrones became famous for swooping over maps of Westeros and Essos to show what locations we would be visiting each episode. And it goes on and on.
Author George R.R. Martin created maps of Westeros and Essos for his Song of Ice and Fire series, but he also invented a long and complicated history involving lots of wars and power struggles, meaning that the maps looked different in ages past. House Stark didn't always control the whole of the North. At one point, King's Landing wasn't on the map, etc.

In the first season of Sherwood Schwartz's "Gilligan's Island," the opening theme song infamously left out character descriptors for Dawn Wells and Russell Johnson. It listed Gilligan, the Skipper too, the millionaire and his wife, the Movie Star, but then merely described Wells and Johnson as "And the rest." This was certainly unfair, as all seven members of the show's ensemble were equally important, each one bringing something valuable to the overall character dynamic.
As many "Gilligan's" fans know, the reason Wells and Johnson weren't described was because of a stipulation in co-star Tina Louise's contract. Louise, who played Ginger the Movie Star, required that she be named last on any opening credits roll. Title star Bob Denver, however, felt that Wells and Johnson deserved more, and pulled rank on Louise. It seemed that he, too, had a contract stipulation allowing him to be listed in the credits wherever he wanted.

Once upon a time in late night television, it was customary for talk shows to fill up their couches as the evening's episode progressed. The first guest would do their segment and then move down a spot on the adjacent couch, making room for the next guest to yap with Johnny Carson, Dick Cavett or whoever. What with the barnacle presence of sidekick Ed McMahon, Carson's couch could get especially crowded some nights. Sometimes this got tense (like the time Burt Reynolds inexplicably went after "Double Dare" host Mark Summers on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno"); sometimes it was chaotic comedy bliss (which is what happens when you ask Carson to rein in the irrepressible duo of Robin Williams and Jonathan Winters); and sometimes it was just plain surreal.
This tradition started to fade out of fashion in the 1980s when "Late Night with David Letterman" introduced its one-guest-at-a-time approach.

There was a time when Marvel Studios and its dedicated fan base were making it seem like their movies and shows should be judged within the parameters of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So, if they made a spy-thriller film like Captain America: The Winter Soldier and I compared it with, let’s say, The Bourne Identity and came to the conclusion that Tws was bad, that was considered unfair. If they made a legal sitcom like She-Hulk and I compared it with something that’s referenced in that miniseries, Ally McBeal, and said that She-Hulk seemed like a cheap copy of Ally McBeal, then I’d be called a hater. But now, Marvel’s aura has dissipated quite a bit due to the decrease in its output, thereby pushing people to watch original stuff. So, I don’t think I’ll be burned at the stake for saying that...

The best Devon Bostick movies and TV shows include an interesting mix of young adult, sci-fi, and historical epics that shows his range as an actor. Bostick got his start thanks to his parents, as his mother is a casting director and his father is an actor and fight coordinator. Science fiction is probably the trickiest genre to nail, be it literature or cinema. While it offers you endless possibilities, you also have to put in a lot of effort to properly set up a world and then dream up a story exciting enough to appeal to your audience. And it’s doubly difficult when it comes to short films. All you have is about ten or twenty minutes. You’ve got to introduce your audience to a world that’s not theirs or something that doesn’t happen in this world, and then tell a story that makes them think. This is an extremely difficult feat to achieve, and the reason I’m being this emphatic is director Nick Azzaro’s short film, Alpha 27, in under ten minutes, has managed to do everything that I’ve mentioned already.
The biggest challenge here is to draw the audience into its world.

The 100 featured heartbreaking deaths that changed the show's dynamics. Characters like Bellamy, Jasper, and Monty met tragic fates. The sacrifices and losses in The 100 shaped the characters and storyline.
The CW's post-apocalyptic sci-fi series The 100 featured a lot of loss throughout its 100 episodes, but these The 100 deaths are the saddest in the show. Because The 100 takes place during a time period when Earth is no longer fully inhabitable, the conflicts between characters were almost always a matter of survival, and death truly did lurk around every corner. The show was never one to hold back in terms of delivering emotional moments, and it certainly wasn't shy when it came to killing off pivotal characters starting in just the third episode of The 100. In fact, many of the deaths changed things about the show as a whole.
The characters in this series were a complex bunch, with many doing seemingly unforgivable things.
