Netflix just dropped its Engagement Report for the second half of 2024, revealing how people spent their time watching movies and shows. From July to December, members watched over 94 billion hours, marking a 5% increase from the previous year. This shows a solid rise in interest, and it’s clear that the more people enjoy what’s on the platform, the more they keep coming back.
One standout is Squid Game Season 2, which premiered just six days before the year ended. Despite the short time frame, it became the most-watched series, with 87 million views. But, it’s important to note that even big hits like this make up only a tiny fraction—less than 1%—of total viewing time.
Another trend we’re seeing is the growing popularity of animated films. A full 10 of the top 25 films were animated, including favorites like Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch (67M views), Trolls Band Together (61M), and...

What are the key points that Netflix has cited as being the most important for this data drop? Netflix reiterated that Engagement (time spent watching) is the best metric to gauge member satisfaction and that this data drop covers ~99% of all video watch time on Netflix and that no single title accounts for more than 1% of total Netflix viewing.

Netflix subscribers streamed more content than ever in the back half of 2024 — and the second season of Korean hit drama “Squid Game” was the biggest TV show on the service.
The streamer’s customers watched more than 94 billion hours on Netflix in the second half of last year, a 5% increase year over year, according to its latest Engagement Report sharing data on what people watched on from July-December 2024.
“Squid Game” Season 2, despite premiering on Dec. 26 with only six days left in the year, dominated the period as Netflix’s most-viewed series with nearly 87 million views. That said, no single title accounts for more than 1% of total viewing on Netflix. For example, “Squid Game 2” represented only 0.7% of global viewing for the time period. The most wonderful time for streaming officially has a date: Dec. 25, 2024. That single day accounted for 51.2 billion minutes of cumulative streaming time, according to Nielsen, making it the most-streamed day of television for the U.S. in the company’s history of measurement.
Streaming represented roughly half of total TV consumption on that day, clocking in at 49.5%.
So what were people watching on Christmas Day? Unsurprisingly, Netflix stole the show. The Baltimore Ravens vs. Houston Texans NFL game was the most-watched event of the day, securing 2.98 billion minutes streamed alone. The Ravens and Texans likely got an assist from Beyoncé, who performed during halftime. That was followed by the Kansas City Chiefs vs. Pittsburg Steelers game, which also secured 2.98 billion minutes streamed, though it saw roughly 200,000 fewer streaming minutes than the other game.

Christmas week brought a bounty of viewing to streaming platforms, with eight titles crossing the billion-minute mark in Nielsen’s streaming ratings. Netflix’s Squid Game, however, stood well apart from the pack.
The Korean hit posted the highest single-week viewing tally for any streaming title in the United States in 2024 with 4.92 billion minutes of viewing for the week of Dec. 23-29. Season two of Squid Game premiered Dec. 26.
The show’s premiere week was the best for any title in two years, in fact — since Wednesday delivered about 5.3 billion minutes of viewing for the week of Nov. 28-Dec. 4, 2022. Squid Game also smashed its own previous high of 3.26 billion minutes during season one’s run in 2021. Netflix had earlier said season two set a worldwide record for a premiere week, based on the streamer’s internal data.

The Traitors is becoming more than just a cult favorite.
The competition series opened its third season with its largest viewing numbers to date: It registered 499 million minutes of viewing on Peacock for the week of Jan. 6-12, based on preliminary Nielsen streaming figures. Season three premiered on Jan. 9. (Nielsen’s streaming figures include all episodes of a show, so some of that time came from prior seasons.)
That’s a series high for The Traitors, whose previous best showing in Nielsen’s streaming ratings was 402 million minutes the week after its season two premiere in January 2024. It’s also the best premiere week for any Peacock unscripted series to date and was the top unscripted show in the United States last week across all platforms.
Full streaming ratings for Jan. 6-12 from Nielsen will be released in a few weeks, per the ratings service’s agreement with streaming platforms.

This claim, included in Universal’s thorough and impressive list of box office achievements for 2024, is technically true: “Domestically ‘Wicked‘ is now … the highest-grossing Broadway adaptation of all-time at the domestic office ahead of ‘Grease’ ($188.62M).”
Also technically true is that “The Grinch” is bigger than “Gone with the Wind,” “Sing” is bigger than “Jaws,” and “Five Nights at Freddy’s” is bigger than “The Godfather.” Also, the 1977 first “Star Wars” is only the third biggest success of that franchise.
Presenting grosses without adjusting skews the real picture of how they compare. It is a prime case of film history erasure, an all-too common occurrence these days. The somewhat (but not impossible in most cases) effort to sort out the true success of films through history starts with adjusting box office takes to current ticket prices. Normally, that is fairly simple, since we know the costs by year and can do the math.

‘Twas the season to be thrilled with action. As people settled in and got cozy with their kith and kin this past Christmas, sometimes watching classics like Home Alone, A Christmas Story and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation just isn’t enough. Many viewers checked out some newer movies that incorporated action with their holiday theme. The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Dwayne Johnson’s Red One on Prime Video became a big hit in homes after its brief theatrical run that grossed $186 million globally. His Santa action flick would be followed by Netflix’s Carry-On, which stars Taron Edgerton as a Tsa agent working on Christmas Eve when he’s faced with a terrorist plot.
Red One faced much criticism for its content, but the newest live-action film from megastar Dwayne Johnson topped the streaming charts in December with 2.1 billion minutes of viewing. Meanwhile, while finishing in second overall, Carry-On was...

Beginning his film career in 1978, the Irish actor broke through with his portrayal of Oskar Schindler in Steven Spielberg's acclaimed Holocaust drama Schindler's List in 1993, which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. From there, Neeson took on several roles in blockbuster movies, including Qui-Gon Jinn in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, Ra's al Ghul in Batman Begins, and Aslan in The Chronicles of Narnia trilogy.
However, starting in 2009, Neeson established himself as a prominent action star with roles in the Taken movies, The A-Team, The Grey, Wrath of the Titans, and Cold Pursuit. He's collaborated multiple times with director Jaume Collet-Serra, starring in four of his action films – Unknown, Non-Stop, Run All Night, and The Commuter. Like clockwork, Christmas is on its way, and so is the Grinch. Every holiday season, his story returns to our screens. The tale first appeared in 1957 when Dr. Seuss introduced us to How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, a children’s book that quickly became a holiday staple.
The story takes place in Whoville, a lively, Christmas-obsessed town nestled in the valley. The Grinch, meanwhile, lives high above them on Mount Crumpit with his dog, Max. Grumpy and bitter, he can’t stand the Whos. One year, he decides enough is enough and devises a plan to stop Christmas entirely.

He sneaks into town, swipes the decorations, snags the presents, and even takes away their holiday feast. But his grand scheme to ruin the holiday backfires when the Whos gather to celebrate anyway, showing him that Christmas is about more than material things.

Three Dr. Seuss adaptations are dominating a major streaming chart, even though two of them are based on the same book. Dr. Seuss, which is the pen name of Theodor Seuss Geisel, is an iconic children's book author and illustrator. Some of his most well-known works are 1954's Horton Hears a Who!, 1957's The Cat in the Hat, 1960's One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish, 1960's Green Eggs and Ham, 1965's Fox in Socks, and many more. His work usually includes fantastical designs for unusual characters, creatures, and worlds.
Over the years, many Dr. Seuss movies have made it to the screen. A few of his works have been adapted into live-action blockbusters, including the Mike Myers-led The Cat in the Hat, which debuted in 2003. However, it is much more common for his work to be adapted into animated specials or features such as 2008's Horton Hears a Who,...

One of the Terminator franchise's biggest commercial disappointments has found streaming success on Netflix. Since the first movie was released in 1984, there have been six Terminator movies and two television series in the long-running franchise. The franchise's first movie, directed and written by James Cameron, set the tone and established Arnold Schwarzenegger as the Terminator, along with presenting the now iconic characters of Sarah Connor and Kyle Reese.
The first sequel, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, is widely considered to be the franchise's best movie, along with being one of the best all-time movie sequels. None of the ensuing movies, released from 2003-2019, were able to reach the same level of acclaim as the original two installments. The franchise expanded onto television with Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, which aired from 2008-2009, along with Terminator Zero, an anime series that debuted on Netflix in 2024.

Tyler Perry's new Netflix movie has become a streaming hit despite mixed reviews. Perry is best known as the creator of the Madea franchise, along with playing the titular role in the comedic film series. As a filmmaker and actor, many of Perry's movies and television series have been met with divisive reception, especially from critics. However, his work has had a great deal of mainstream success, with the Madea movies only being a portion of this.
Perry has also gained recognition for the 2005 movie Diary of a Mad Black Woman, written and adapted from his stage play. He found longevity with the Tyler Perry's House of Payne series, which aired for eight seasons on TBS. In addition to Madea, Perry starred in J.J. Carry-On, a film about traveling through the airport at Christmas, is on course to break into Netflix’s top ten films of all time.
The thriller, which stars Taron Egerton, Jason Bateman, and Sofia Carson, bested its performance last week by adding another 55M views on top of last week’s 42M number. It remains number one on Netflix’s weekly film charts, having already become Netflix’s biggest launch of a film this year.
Given that it has scored 97M views in its first ten days, Carry-On, which was directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and produced by Amblin Partners, it could well enter Netflix’s top ten films of all time. For reference, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery wrapped up 136.3M views in its first month to take the ten spot, Jennifer Lopez’s The Mother is number nine with 136.4M views, We Can Be Heroes got 137.3M for...

Streaming audiences have been all over the place with their holiday viewing this year. Instead of non-stop Christmas classics, we've seen Megan Fox sci-fi thrillers dominating Netflix's charts, and Gerard Butler-led crime thrillers taking over the Max rankings. That said, viewers have still managed to squeeze in some traditional holiday fare amid all the crime and sci-fi stuff, with Prime Video audiences propelling Arnold Schwarzenegger's 1996 Christmas comedy "Jingle All the Way" to the top of that streamer's charts. But even as the festive classics surface for the season, our collective appetite for darker offerings appears to be insatiable, as a new Netflix comedy drama series has managed to stand out amid the holiday stream-fest.
Back in 2022, "Dead to Me" creator Liz Feldman signed on to helm new Netflix series "No Good Deed," and now the show has finally arrived. It seems it was worth the wait, too,...

Jim Carrey's divisive Christmas movie has become a streaming hit 24 years after its original release. The comedic actor rose to stardom during the 1990s with a series of box office hits, starting with Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask, and Dumb and Dumber (all released in 1994), followed by Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls and Batman Forever (both in 1995). These hits made Carrey one of the highest-paid comedic actors, starting with the slightly darker comedy, The Cable Guy, in 1996 and Liar Liar in 1997.
Carrey's success as a leading comedic actor continued well into the 2000s, starting with How the Grinch Stole Christmas in 2000, which became the second highest-grossing Christmas movie of all time, and continued with Bruce Almighty, Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events, and Yes Man in the following years. In 2009, Carrey played multiple characters in the 3D animated adaptation of the classic Charles Dickens story, A Christmas Carol,...

Christmas bargain shopping usually doesn’t start until December 26. But this week’s Video on Demand top 10 lists suggest the sales started early. And once again this year, Ron Howard’s “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” (Universal) leads the way.
Overall, nine different holiday-related movies charted either at iTunes or Fandango (as VOD) or among the current top 10 movies streaming on Netflix. For the latter, that includes their original thriller “Carry-On,” with the Christmas Eve-set movie starring Tagon Egerton and Jason Bateman #1 for the second straight week.
It’s an odd year for VOD, with fewer than usual top recent films getting a pre-holiday release with potential digital gift ability. None of November’s four biggest hits, “Gladiator II” will go digital after its fifth weekend in theaters. It is likely to lead VOD activity both because of its strengths and the lack of competition during this period.

The week of Nov. 18-24 was a good one to premiere a streaming show with “man” in the title.
Netflix’s A Man on the Inside and Paramount+’s Landman both ranked among the top five original streaming series in their first week on the charts. A Man on the Inside, starring Ted Danson as a widower who goes undercover in a retirement community working for a private investigator, drew 880 million minutes of viewing for the week. That’s either the second- or third-best debut for a streaming comedy in 2024, depending on whether you classify The Bear (1.23 billion minutes for the week of its season three premiere) as one. (Nobody Wants This had just over a billion minutes for its first week.)
Landman, meanwhile, snagged 653 million minutes of viewing, largely for its first two episodes that premiered Nov. 17. The third episode, which debuted Nov. 24, had only a day to contribute...

Warning: This article contains Spoilers for The Simpsons season 36's special “O C’Mon All Ye Faithful."
While The Simpsons season 36’s holiday special features an entirely original storyline, the double-sized Christmas episode also took the opportunity to parody a trio of classic Christmas specials. The Simpsons season 36’s changes to the show’s formula have seen the series garner praise. Despite airing over 770 episodes throughout its 36 years on the air, The Simpsons has proven that it still has plenty of creative juice with episodes that play with its format, rewrite its canon, and disregard conventions in favor of invention. As Vulture noted in 2023, The Simpsons is officially good again.

Carry-On debuts on Netflix to be the resident alternative to cheery Christmas movies and rom-coms as Taron Edgerton plays a Tsa worker in a high-stakes situation. Our Tyler Nichols thought it was a pretty ok for a Die Hard clone when he said in his review, “Ultimately, Carry On feels like more of a whimper than a bang. For everything that works, there are a multitude of things that don’t. Even so, I still have a soft spot for these kinds of films and Jason Bateman’s performance is absolutely electric. If you don’t let the logic of it all ruin it for you, then this is an interesting thrill ride. But I have a very hard time recommending it as it doesn’t really bring anything new to the table.”

We’re definitely in the run-up to Christmas now. The festive season is being cranked up to almost maximum as the countdown to the big day is well underway. With all the extra tasks and stress that can bring everyone needs a chance to relax and unwind.
What better way to do so than curled up at home watching a movie? Seasonal snacks and refreshments are, of course, optional. But do you head straight for a Christmas movie to keep the mood going? Or are you searching out anything other than a film with Santa, elves, and sugary sweet themes?
Of course, there are halfway houses like the classic Die Hard and the much more recent homage to the Bruce Willis movie, Carry-On. Are they Christmas films or not? Before the Marvel Cinematic Universe and DC Extended Universe became household names, Jim Carrey made waves in the superhero genre with The Mask. Released in 1994, this quirky comic book adaptation showed Carrey’s incredible range as he brought to life a character with two wildly contrasting personalities.
That year was a career-defining one for Carrey, who also delivered two other cult classics: Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and Dumb and Dumber. With this trio of hits, Carrey became a comedy legend.

His superhero journey didn’t stop there, as he took on the role of The Riddler in 1995’s Batman Forever. However, it was The Mask that truly changed the game, combining humor, action, and groundbreaking effects. Despite its massive success at the box office, Carrey’s paycheck for the film was surprisingly modest compared to the fortune it raked in.

Pablo Larraín’s opera biopic “Maria” is the latest and last of this year’s Netflix’s Oscar top Best Picture and acting contender films to stream on the service. And like “The Piano Lesson” and “Emilia Pérez” (never listed), “Maria” had a short shelf life among top-viewed titles. It debuted at #4, placed for two more days, then dropped off before this weekend..
The streamer continues to do very well in Oscar nominations and has won top prizes. But Netflix has so far failed to win Best Picture or either lead acting prizes. The company’s top contenders always get some theatrical play. But in that absence, how they do on the site remains a gauge of how popular they are, and public interest is always a nice arrow for any awards campaign to have in its quiver.
The VOD top 10s this week at iTunes (ranking by transactions daily) and Fandango are more conventional.

Jim Carrey wants to return for How the Grinch Stole Christmas, but on one condition that could make it even better than the original. Speaking with Comicbook, Carrey commented on the advancements in technology and revealed: "Anything is possible in this world." Jim Carrey was a huge draw for How the Grinch Stole Christmas and is a large reason why the movie is still adored 24 years later. The Grinch is the exemplification of a perfect character's journey, with moments that are both touching and hilarious. Carrey is singlehandedly responsible for most of the funniest quotes in How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
The studio encountered a lot of trouble retaining the rights to Dr. Seuss' character, and it is abundantly clear that Carrey legitimized How the Grinch Stole Christmas — which makes the prospect of his return all the more exciting. Like many relatively new streaming services, Peacock doesn’t have nearly the library of holiday films as some of the larger, more established platforms. However, it is not completely bereft of quality options. While I wouldn’t recommend subscribing to the NBCUniversal streamer specifically for its Christmas offerings, if you already have a subscription there is small, but eclectically interesting, group of holiday movies you can stream to keep you merry and bright through the end of the year.
Both the original “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” and the animated remake “The Grinch” are available on Peacock; they even have a Grinch-themed Yule Log channel that you can put on in the background if you want to make sure that your holiday parties have a little tinge of mischief in the air.

Jim Carrey is best known for his comedic roles and his very peculiar style of physical comedy, and in 2000, he starred in the Christmas classic The Grinch, and his reason for doing it makes it even better and more memorable. Carrey rose to fame in the 1990s after starring in some of the most successful comedies of the decade, such as Ace Ventura, The Mask, and Dumb and Dumber, as well as in Joel Schumacher’s Batman Forever, where he famously played The Riddler. Carrey kept this successful streak throughout the 2000s, beginning with How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
Directed by Ron Howard and based on Dr. Seuss’ 1957 classic children’s book of the same name, How The Grinch Stole Christmas introduces viewers to the title character (played by Carrey), a bad-tempered and misanthropic green creature who hates Christmas. After a chance encounter with him and learning of the origin of his hatred for Christmas,...

When it comes to making live-action adaptations of video games, Hollywood hasn’t had the best time. Only rarely does a live-action manage to recreate the hype (and love) that the video game commanded from the fans.
Over the years, there have been some exceptions though. While The Witcher stands at the top of the pile, works like Uncharted have also amazed fans. Sonic The Hedgehog was no different. The movie’s success prompted Paramount Pictures to dedicate an entire trilogy to the project. And the latest entrant looks set to bring Jim Carrey the accolade he always deserved.

Nielsen Streaming Top 10: ‘Cross’ Debuts at No. 1 With 1.3 Billion Minutes Viewed in First Four Days

“Cross,” the James Patterson adaptation starring Aldis Hodge, debuted at No. 1 on Nielsen’s weekly streaming rankings, with 1.36 billion minutes watched during the week of Nov. 11 to Nov. 17. All eight episodes of the series premiered on Amazon Prime Video on Nov. 14, meaning the show was only available for four days during the viewing period.

The opening week of Cross was a big one for Prime Video.
The Amazon-owned streamer claimed the No. 1 overall spot on Nielsen’s streaming charts for Nov. 11-17 as Cross drew 1.36 billion minutes of viewing (the full eight-episode season premiered Nov. 14). The crime drama, starring Aldis Hodge and based on James Patterson’s Alex Cross novels, ranks as Prime Video’s second-best new series debut of 2024 behind Fallout. (Amazon says 40 million viewers worldwide watched at least some of Cross over its first three weeks of release.)
While Cross had a big opening, HBO’s DC Comics-based series The Penguin made its first appearance on the Nielsen charts for the week after its finale. The series had 595 million viewing minutes on Max for the week — and apparently has been landing just outside the acquired series top 10 for most of its run.
