The series was originally supposed to be called The Lost Boys but there were copyright issues so Nowhere Boys was chosen instead.
Luke Hamill is a big fan of science fiction, and his name would seem to reference both Luke Skywalker from Star Wars and Mark Hamill, the actor who played him.
Michala Banas (Phoebe) and Dougie Baldwin (Felix) play mother and son in the comedy series Upper Middle Bogan (2013).
