The names of the two protagonists (Fujino and Kyomoto) can be combined to form "Fujimoto", the surname of the original manga author, Tatsuki Fujimoto.
To complete the film in time, director Kiyotaka Oshiyama said he spent two and a half months living in the production studio and worked overtime.
Mirroring the original manga, the first and last shots of Fujino have references to the Oasis song "Don't Look Back in Anger", which partly inspired the work. On both shots, on the bottom left, words are clear enough to be read: in the first one, on a book spine the word "Don't" can be made out, on the final shot a book cover reads "In Anger" sideways. Combined with the film's title card this forms the song's title.
