Ah, January. A new year, a clean slate, a fresh chance to… do what you’ve always done, maybe? Not that we at IndieWire don’t encourage personal growth, but we do support you if you decide to spend a lot of this month recovering from the holidays and melting into your couch in front of a watchlist.

It’s a fairly big month on Prime Video in March, at least compared to the other streaming service offerings! There are are two major films arriving on Amazon’s streamer. The first is a remake of the Patrick Swayze action classic Road House. Stepping into the late Swayze’s shoes? A crazy-jacked Jake Gyllenhaal, who really seemed to want to go the extra mile for this project.
The other big film coming to Prime Video is Ricky Stanicky, and the plot sounds really fun! It follows three friends who have always blamed their mistakes on an imaginary guy called Ricky Stanicky. When they have to finally introduce people to Stanicky, they decide to hire a washed-up actor (John Cena) to impersonate him. Hilarity ensues, maybe? But if neither of those make your watchlist, there’s also the return of the animated hit series Invincible.

Exclusive: Superstore alumna Lauren Ash is joining another single-camera broadcast workplace comedy as a series regular: she has been cast as a lead opposite Gina Rodriguez on ABC’s Not Dead Yet.
Written by Casey Johnson and David Windsor based on Alexandra Potter’s 2020 book Confessions of a Forty-Something F**k Up, Not Dead Yet centers on newly single and feeling-old Nell Serrano (Rodriguez), a self-described disaster who works to restart the life and career she left behind 10 years ago. A once-successful journalist, Nell put her career on hold to help her fiancé get his restaurant off the ground. Following their breakup, she takes the only job she can get – writing obituaries – which at first seems like a step backward but ultimately might be exactly what she needs to move forward.

Getting romantic dramas made in today’s cinematic landscape is becoming more and more challenging, yet veteran director Andy Fickman, who is currently in production on the buzzy indie “One True Loves,” remains cheerful and optimistic about the genre. “In general, and pretty much short of being a tentpole, it’s very hard to get things made. People aren’t making romantic dramedies that much anymore, but at the same time, there’s a real need for content because of the streaming outlets,” says Fickman, whose energy level remains high even after shooting an all-nighter. Highland Film Group is representing international rights to “One True Loves,” and is co-financing the picture alongside Blue Rider’s Walter Josten. Highland Film Group’s domestic arm, the Avenue, is distributing domestically.

Florida Georgia Line member Brian Kelley’s plan to bring a country-music musical to life as a legit stage production is now extending to a movie version that is being developed simultaneously.
Kelley and his partners announced not just a film iteration of “May We All” — whose planned staging has been put off due to the pandemic — but the director who’s been tapped for a movie version: Andy Fickman, whose credits include directing and exec-producing CBS’ TV series “Kevin Can Wait” as well as a number of feature films and stage productions.
The stage version, announced in Variety in 2019, was set for a developmental production at Memphis’ Playhouse in the Square in fall 2020, to have been followed by an official Nashville premiere in 2021. As lockdowns have pushed any of these stage debuts further back, producers decided to move up a film adaptation.

Kevin James Has a Losing Driver and a Demanding New Boss in Trailer for Netflix’s ‘The Crew’ (Video)
Kevin James seems like a pretty solid crew chief in his new NASCAR Netflix comedy series, “The Crew.” Unfortunately, everyone around him appears to be as hapless as can be.
But don’t take our word for it — watch the trailer above.
“The Crew” is set to debut on Monday, Feb. 15 on Netflix, the streaming service said on Friday. The timing follows the real-life Daytona 500 race on Sunday, Feb. 14.

Shirley Knight, who was twice Oscar nominated for best supporting actress, for “The Dark at the Top of the Stairs” (1960) and “Sweet Bird of Youth” (1962), and won a Tony and three Emmys, died on Wednesday of natural causes in San Marcos, Texas. She was 83.
Her daughter, actress Kaitlin Hopkins, paid tribute to Knight in a lengthy Facebook post.

Paramount's Sonic the Hedgehog looks to keep things rolling this weekend as it faces incoming competition from 20th Century's The Call of the Wild and Stx's Brahms: The Boy II. Sonic will have no trouble holding on to the top spot following its strong start last weekend as it looks to top $110 million after just ten days in release.
Following a massive start last weekend, accompanied by solid critical reviews and audience response, Paramount's Sonic the Hedgehog is looking at a another weekend atop the box office. We're anticipating a dip around -48% or so for a $30 millilon three-day. Should that forecast hold look for the film to top $110 million by the end of the weekend, on its way to becoming the third highest grossing video game adaptation domestically after just ten days in release.

Random Roles: D.B. Woodside on Lucifer, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, and learning harsh lessons from 24
Welcome to Random Roles, wherein we talk to actors about the characters who defined their careers. The catch: They don’t know beforehand what roles we’ll ask them to talk about.
The actor: This year not only marks the 20th anniversary of D.B. Woodside’s first TV appearance (Steven Bochco’s Murder One) but also finds him with a starring role on a prime-time series. Over the course of the past two decades, Woodside has popped up in films as diverse as Romeo Must Die and Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2, but if his face looks familiar, it’s probably due to his regular or recurring roles on Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Hellcats, Parenthood, Suits, and 24, not to mention a number of one-off appearances on other series. It’s tempting to think that Hollywood is slitting its own throat with egregiously awful films like Suicide Squad and Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2. But Evan Puschak doesn’t see it that way, as he explains in a new episode of his web series The Nerdwriter called “The Epidemic Of Passable Movies.” While blatantly terrible movies are frustrating and inevitable, Puschak admits, they’re vastly outnumbered by those adequate, forgettable movies that major studios release every month. “They’re not bad. They might even be better than okay. But they’re a far cry from great or noteworthy or something that you would like to see more than once.” Puschak says that his tolerance for these films has dropped sharply as their numbers have increased in recent years. Hollywood is now drowning in mediocrity, thanks to stuff like The Wedding Ringer or Now You See Me. Films like these...

It takes a really, really terrible movie to wind up with a score of 0% on Rotten Tomatoes – even Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 has 5%. And yet, it does happen…
Last year, Adam Sandler’s “comedy” western, The Ridiculous Six, managed the incredible feat: it’s currently sitting pretty on Rotten Tomatoes with an embarrassing score of 0%, based on 30 reviews.
The smart money is on the following films joining that incredible level of failure on every level…
10. God’s Not Dead 2 Pure Flix Entertainment

As a cinematic genre, “Christian dramas” rarely fare well on the critical review side of things. God’s Not Dead, one such film from 2014, managed a mere 15% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The plot concerned a student, played by Kevin Sorbo, who goes up against an atheist teacher who demands that his students sign a declaration that “God is dead” in order to pass his philosophy class.

Yeah, yeah, the Oscars were last night, congratulations to Leonardo DiCaprio and Spotlight and all, celebration of quality filmmaking, whatever. Let's look at the winners of what really matters: the Razzies! As is tradition, the Razzie winners were announced the night before the Oscar ceremony. No big surprises here: Fifty Shades of Grey took home most of the "prizes" though Fantastic Four took home a few big ones as well. Both movies tied for Worst Picture. And while Eddie Redmayne may have lost out on the Oscar to DiCaprio, he did get a Razzie for Worst Supporting Actor for Jupiter Ascending. Congratulations, Eddie! The full list of nominees and winners (in bold) are below: Worst Picture Fantastic Four (tie) Fifty Shades of Grey (tie) Jupiter Ascending Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 Pixels Worst Actor Johnny Depp (Mortdecai) Jamie Dornan (Fifty Shades of Grey) Kevin James (Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2...

It has come to full circle for Sylvester Stallone. The perennial Razzie awardee has just been redeemed! The Oscar frontrunner for Best Supporting Actor (see my full Oscar predictions here) won the Razzie Redeemer Award at the 2016 Golden Raspberry Award. It's all good now Mr. Stallone!
Meanwhile, both "Fantastic Four" and "Fifty Shades of Grey" took home the worst of the worst -- the Worst Picture of the year! They were both so bad that they had to share this dishonor!

The Razzie Awards have actually managed to stake their claim on a part of the film world now, with their yearly release not going unnoticed by anyone, and this despite the fact that you too can vote for them, as long as you buy in.
This year was bound to be dominated by the biggest winners, because no movie managed more universal hatred than Fifty Shades of Grey (and those who hated it weren’t always waiting for the release), unless it was Fantastic Four and it’s director outrage kurfuffle (he managed his own award as well).
Many of the other awards were largely foregone conclusions as well, mainly because Kevin James, Adam Sandler, and The Chipmunks made movies… or whatever.
Still, worst movies and performances make for tricky voting. It’s hard to pick among the nominees sometimes, which explains the dual win for overall worst picture, but...
