Last week I extolled the pleasures of a new documentary feature focused on a very talented singer, Ms. Linda Ronstadt. And this weekend sees the release of another “entertainment personality” doc. Now, it’s not another singer or musician this time. No, it’s not an actress or actor. And it’s not a painter or a comedian (even her detractors would have to admit that she was very witty). As you’ve no doubt concluded, this film is all about a writer, not of plays or books, rather she toiled away in the “fourth estate”, newspapers. Yes twenty-somethings, just decade or two ago, folks got their news on folded paper, not this monitor screen or on an app. Some of the writers of columns (usually in the editorial section) became stars, with papers fighting over their services (this happened with comic strip creators in their heyday) and promoting them...

“There’s anger and frustration within the company,” said Google CEO Sundar Pichai today as thousands of employees of the tech giant around the globe walked off the job Thursday in protest over the way sexual harassment claims have been dealt with at the company. “We all feel it, I feel it.”
“We are grappling with it, as are many places,” he said of the #metoo era and more and more women from all walks of life and industry coming forward with claims of sexual harassment, workplace discrimination and sexual assault.
Perhaps, but the digital kingpin offered scant specifics beyond promises of more transparency and change as he tried to assure critics that “the past couple of years shows” – Aka since he took over in 2015

Exclusive: Annapurna and Plan B have partnered to acquire the rights to give Spotlight-like treatment to the story of how New York Times reporters Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey worked with editor Rebecca Corbett to break the biggest scandal story Hollywood has seen in decades, the one that took down Harvey Weinstein. The stories landed the reporters a Pulitzer earlier this month.
The bombshell first story ran last October 5, when Kantor and Twohey revealed an array of alleged sexual harassment and assaults against women by The Weinstein Company co-chairman and indie film mogul Weinstein that dated back decades. The article included details of hush money paid to cover up the sexual indiscretions and first-person accounts by actresses while Weinstein denied — and continues to deny — an charges of non-consensual sexual indiscretions, and the article hit Hollywood like a bombshell.
Weinstein was immediately fired by the TWC Board of Directors, and a...

I was going to get political again this week, but it’s too goddamn depressing. Here are some headlines just from yesterday, courtesy of that #FakeNews Enemy of the People publication, that “old Grey Lady,” the New York Times:
E.P.A. Chief Voids Obama-Era Rules In Blazing Start Medicaid Plan Risks Changing Life For Millions ‘I’m President And They’re Not’: Trump Attack Brings Crowd To Its Feet Trump Administration Targets Parents In New Immigration Crackdown
And then there are the tweets. After Il Tweetci the Mad – formerly known as “Il Trumpci the Mad” – went on a rampage against Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough this past Thursday – what the fuck is with his obsession over women and blood? How the hell did Ivanka, Marla, and Melania ever get pregnant, much less get near enough to a “man” who is so phobic over natural functions to allow it to happen?...

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
Even Emma Watson and Tom Hanks May Not Be Enough to Make a Mark As April Ends
The last weekend of April, and the “slower” spring movie season is ending this weekend, leading directly into the start of the lucrative summer box office next week. As has been the case in past years, the last couple weekends in April see a couple movies hoping to bring in any amount of money before the first big summer blockbuster, and other movies that will steal away their theaters. Last weekend was pretty sad, but hopefully a few of this weekend’s movies will fare better.
The movie that stands the best chance at finding an audience this weekend is the tech industry thriller The Circle...

"It all ends here! No more lies!" Beacon Pictures and Broadvision Entertainment have released an official trailer for an indie thriller titled Grey Lady, from director/actor John Shea. The movie stars Eric Dane (seen in Marley & Me, Valentine's Day, "Grey's Anatomy", "The Last Ship") as a Boston police officer who goes to Nantucket to investigate the murder of his partner, but discovers more than he bargained for. The cast includes Natalie Zea as a woman he befriends who helps him around the town, plus Amy Madigan, Adrian Lester, Carolyn Stotesbery, Chris Meyer, and Rebecca Gayheart; as well as director John Shea in a small role. This looks pretty much straight-to-tv quality, but it is surprisingly going to theaters. Here's the official Us trailer (+ poster) for John Shea's Grey Lady, direct from YouTube: When Boston homicide detective James Doyle's partner is killed in an ambush, their dying words...

On Aug. 16, one of cinema's best babysitting adventures, Uncle Buck, will celebrate its 25th anniversary.
The John Hughes comedy tells the story of the Russell family; mom and dad need someone to look after their three kids Asap. Short on options, Uncle Buck – a sloppy and crass city dweller – is recruited at the last minute. Expertly played by the late John Candy, Buck tackles giant pancakes, power drills and a game of endless questions with Macaulay Culkin, proving crazy uncles have some serious skills.
A quarter of a century later, Uncle Buck still brings the laughs and warm, fuzzy feelings.
