Glenn here. Despite writing about (at least) one documentary a week since March, it feels like we've barely made a dint in covering the mammoth list of 145 titles that will be competing for the five coveted nominations in Best Documentary Feature category at the upcoming Oscars. Collectively, The Film Experience has reviewed 30 of the list, and we hope to cover a bunch more as we get closer to nominations.
There are a lot of noteworthy titles on this list so even making it to the 15-strong shortlist will be tough. And it's worth remembering that big titles are left off and smaller little-known titles get elevated every year. I have never heard of quite a few of these - and many others only have/had qualifying runs with releases planned for 2017 so it's impossible to really gauge some of them. What big titles will be left off? Will the recent scandals help or hinder Weiner,...

For this week's episode of our cinematography series Hit Me With Your Best Shot we wanted a slight curveball as a way to celebrate the release of the Costume Design documentary Women He's Undressed. It's now available to rent on iTunes or purchase on other digital platforms. (Jose's interview with the director here). The film is about the legendary Orry-Kelly, who designed a truckload of classic Hollywood features and stars, and won three Oscars in the 1950s for An American in Paris, Les Girls and Some Like It Hot. So those playing "Best Shot" this week could choose any of those three. I watched Les Girls since it gets the least attention and they even use its image for the documentary's poster (left).
Les Girls (George Cukor, 1957) is not well remembered today but curiously it reminds us yet again that mainstream Hollywood in the 50s and 60s paid a lot...

Though actors, writers, and directors often receive the lion’s share of the credit for the success of a film, there are plenty of people behind the scenes that do marvelous, unsung work. Take legendary Hollywood costume designer Orry-Kelly for instance, who put his signature on such films like “Casablanca,” “42nd Street,” “An American in Paris,” and more. The new documentary “Women He’s Undressed” explores the life and career of Orry-Kelly by mixing recreations of his life with testimonies from intimates and admirers in order to better understand one of the godfathers of glamour. Some of the interviewees include Jane Fonda, Angela Lansbury, Leonard Maltin, and more. Watch an exclusive clip from the film below featuring a discussion about Orry-Kelly’s work on Billy Wilder’s “Some Like It Hot.”

Alex Russell and Aaron Pedersen in Ivan Sen's Goldstone.
When If speaks to Sydney Film Festival director Nashen Moodley, he's at the tail-end of a whirlwind day in which Ivan Sen's.Goldstone was unveiled as the festival's opening night film, to screen at Sydney's State Theatre on June 8..
So what's the reaction been like?
"So far it's been very positive," Moodley said..
"People are very eager to see Ivan Sen's new film. He's such a special filmmaker, and such a multi-talented one. He writes, directs, edits, composes the score, and has such an incredible body of work."
Moodley saw the film almost seven weeks ago, in early March, just after Sen had finished it.
"There was an opportunity to see an early cut, but we had enough time to see it when it was finished, so we waited."
"The film looks incredible, and he shot it himself...

But with Oscar nomination voting closing today and so many interviews these past few weeks this seems as good a time as any to ask you to "consider" our official index of interviews from the film year and to take a less daily approach to the remaining one-on-ones.

Screen Australia has started a scoping study to figure out new approaches to building pride in Australian films.
The workshopping of ideas is a tacit recognition that the Australian cinema .brand. was tarnished last year by a string of films that underperformed at the B.O., reflected in the lowly market share of 2.43 per cent.
Arguably the brand wasn.t the underlying problem as audiences this year have readily embraced The Water Diviner, Paper Planes, Mad Max: Fury Road and That Sugar Film, in addition to the well-received Frackman and Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead.
Moviegoers may well feel more even confident about the entertainment value of national cinema with Brendan Cowell.s Ruben Guthrie and Gillian Armstrong's Women He's Undressed launching next week, followed by Jeremy Sims' Last Cab to Darwin, Simon Stone's The Daughter, Jocelyn Moorhouse's The Dressmaker, Neil Armfield's Holding the Man and Stuart McDonald.s Oddball.

The Australian B.O. is running hot, outpacing last year by more than 14%, and some industry mavens predict 2015 will set an all-time record.
Distributors and exhibitors are more than usually confident about the second half release line-up, including at least half a dozen Australian films.
Powered by Mad Max: Fury Road ($20.5 million in five weeks), Paper Planes and The Water Diviner,. local films have raked in $42.8 million this year, already eclipsing the paltry 2014 calendar total of $26.1 million and 2013.s $38.5 million.
The Sydney Film Festival looks like being an effective launching pad for Brendan Cowell's Ruben Guthrie (which opens on July 16 via Madman), Gillian Armstrong's Women He's Undressed (Rialto, also July 16), Jeremy Sims'. Last Cab to Darwin (Icon, August 6), Neil Armfield.s Holding the Man (Transmission, August 27) and Simon Stone.s The Daughter (Roadshow, September 10).
