Watson looks like it's going to be a fantastic mix of genres for CBS and here's what to know about it!

There have been scores of TV shows based on Sherlock Holmes, including CBS's own Elementary, starring Jonny Lee Miller as a modern version of the iconic detective. This take was interesting with Lucy Liu as Joan Watson, a very capable assistant to Sherlock and a good detective in her own right. 

Now, CBS is going back to the well with the upcoming Watson which looks like an interesting mix of the Holmes mythos and the Fox series House (which makes sense as Holmes inspired that). The first trailer hints at the great mixing of medical and crime drama that should make this a standout show!

What is Watson about?

The show takes place months after the apparent death of Sherlock Holmes as John Watson (Morris Chestnut) is still in mourning.

The world premiere of Paramount Global’s “Watson” raised the curtain on this year’s Mipcom in Cannes. The series, set to premiere on Jan 26 on the CBS Television Network, sees “Reasonable Doubt” star Morris Chestnut as the iconic Dr. John Watson in a Sherlock Holmes spin focusing on Watson’s medical career.

“Watson” follows the titular character after the death of Holmes as he resumes his medical career as the head of a clinic specialized in rare disorders. The series is described as “a medical show with a strong investigative spine, featuring a modern version of one of history’s greatest detectives as he turns his attention from solving crimes to solving medical mysteries.”

Morris Chestnut, the latest star to join Hulu-Onyx Collective’s hit legal drama “Reasonable Doubt,” says he’d love to be a permanent addition to Jax Stewart’s (Emayatzy Corinealdi) bench.

“I would love to be,” the actor told TheWrap. “Without a doubt. Working with Raamla [Mohamed] and Emayatzy, the whole cast is incredible. Raamla writes a great script. I couldn’t wait to see what was going to be in the next script after I read the previous one. I would come back in a heartbeat.”

In Season 1 of Hulu’s Reasonable Doubt, it was Michael Ealy’s infatuated, convicted character who came between defense lawyer Jax Stewart (played by Emayatzy Corinealdi) and her husband Lewis (McKinley Freeman).

In the drama’s second season — which debuted with its first two episodes on Thursday — it’s new addition Morris Chestnut as slick attorney Corey Cash who’s creating trouble for Jax after she brings him in to help defend her close friend against murder charges. In addition to shaking things up at Jax’s office with his strong opinions and charming personality, Corey also finds his way into Jax’s home.

Todd Harthan has signed a new multi-year overall deal with 20th Television, Variety has learned exclusively.

The news comes roughly a month after Harthan was named the showrunner and executive producer of the upcoming ABC procedural “High Potential” starring Kaitlin Olson, which is produced by fellow Disney-owned studio ABC Signature. Harthan took over the role from Rob Thomas, who exited the show earlier in June.

Harthan has a relationship with 20th TV going back a decade. Chicago P.D. has added a notable new character for the upcoming episode, Escape.

In addition to Officer Dante Torres (played by Benjamin Levy Aguilar) finally getting screen time, several new characters get introduced on February 7.

As advertised in the new Chicago P.D. episode promo, Intelligence aims to take down the city’s biggest drug lord.

Torres must go undercover during the new episode to get more information, allowing the writers to showcase the character again.

For the first three episodes of Chicago P.D. Season 11, Torres has been furloughed to spend time with his mother.

Now, Torres returns for a case that could take a few episodes to resolve.

CBS has handed a straight-to-series order to Watson, from writer Craig Sweeny (Elementary), Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment and CBS Studios, for the 2024-25 broadcast season. Morris Chestnut is set to play the title role and executive produce the medical drama inspired by the characters from Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes mysteries.

Last January, CBS ordered two drama pilots, Elsbeth starring Carrie Preston and Matlock starring Kathy Bates, as well as writers rooms for two medical drama projects, Watson and The Pact.

In anticipation of a series pickup, CBS and CBS Studios recently attached Chestnut as the lead and Larry Teng as director and executive producer of the first episode, paving the way to a formal greenlight.

CBS has given a straight to series order to a drama series that will see Morris Chestnut star as the iconic literary character Dr. John Watson, the companion of master detective Sherlock Holmes.

The show, titled “Watson,” is a contemporary story set one year after the death of Holmes at the hands of his archnemesis Moriarty. Per the official logline, the show will see “Dr. John Watson (Chestnut) resume his medical career as the head of a clinic dedicated to treating rare disorders. Watson’s old life isn’t done with him, though—Moriarty and Watson are set to write their own chapter of a story that has fascinated audiences for more than a century.”

Craig Sweeny created the series and will serve as showrunner and executive producer. Chestnut will executive produce in addition to starring. Shäron Moalem MD, PhD, and Aaron Kaplan and Brian Morewitz for Kapital Entertainment also executive produce.

Principal photography has already wrapped on the film, according to Deadline. He's got some drama-heavy hitters involved, including Al Pacino, but also comedy stars like the brilliant Suzy Nakamura.

Okoro Carroll created, showruns, and is an executive producer on Found, which will premiere on NBC in February. Recently, as part of her overall deal with Warner Bros., she signed on to write and executive produce the reboot of the classic ABC drama Life Goes On and launched Rock My Soul Productions with Lindsay Dunn, who serves as Head of Television.

Additionally, she is developing The Fed, which follows a group of young hopefuls as they begin an elite fellowship with the Federal Reserve, at Freevee. Okoro Carroll started her career in economics at the Federal Reserve.

Terrence O’Hara, who directed 85 episodes of the CBS dramas NCIS and NCIS: Los Angeles from 2003 until this year, died Dec. 5 at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles after a five-year battle with cancer, his family announced. He was 76.

A former actor who studied at the American Film Institute, O’Hara was a director for more than 30 years, also working on such other shows as The Blacklist, Smallville, Nikita, Lie to Me, Rosewood, Heroes, The Unit, Legends, Dollhouse, Grimm, Sons of Anarchy, The Shield, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Jag, Angel, Magic City, The X-Files, Dark Angel, Touched by an Angel and Pacific Blue.

His 56th and final NCIS episode, “Birds of a Feather” — the show’s 19th-season finale — aired May 23; the last of his 29 NCIS: Los Angeles assignments, “Bonafides,” aired in March. He also helmed four episodes of NCIS: New Orleans in 2014-16.

In an Instagram post, O’Hara’s daughter Maddie confirmed the death of her father was Monday, December 5 due to cancer.

“I never thought I’d be writing those words— it’s surreal. I’ve always imagined him walking me down the aisle, watching his grandkids grow up, and getting old at the lake with my mom. But cancers a bitch, and his life was cut too short,” she shared. “He’s been quietly battling for the past 5 years, this whole time, directing, working, fighting, and smiling through it. He was famous for his infectious laugh, his noisy ass sneeze, his wild sailor mouth on set, his incredible, thoughtful, creative, and brilliant mind…I could go on.”

Exclusive: Eddie Cibrian (Country Comfort) and Daniella Pineda (Jurassic World: Dominion) have joined the Season 3 cast of ABC’s Home Economics in recurring guest star roles. The comedy series currently airs Wednesday nights at 9:30 p.m.

Beyoncé is officially tied with her husband Jay-Z for most Grammy nominations received by a musician after the 2023 nominees were announced Tuesday. On Tuesday (15 November), the Recording Academy announced the artists who have been nominated in each category, with Adele and Beyoncé battling it out for the top award, Album of the Year.

Winners will be announced on 5 February 2023 during the ceremony, which will broadcast live from the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. US audiences can tune in on CBS and stream live and on-demand on Paramount+.

Richard Shepard, writer/director of the Netflix-released horror film The Perfection (read our review Here), and his co-writers Eric Charmelo and Nicole Snyder are teaming up again to develop a supernatural mystery called St. Donatus for the Peacock streaming service, Deadline reports. Charmelo and Snyder have written the script for the St. Donatus pilot, and Shepard will be directing it. The story is set in a small town in Iowa… a small town that, of course, hides a dark secret.

An unwitting family, relocating from Brooklyn, moved into a newly-renovated farmhouse on the outskirts of town. When the family starts experiencing unsettling occurrences, it brings them closer to the town’s secret… and the very thing trapped in their cellar.

Exclusive: Pen15 co-creator and star Anna Konkle has been tapped as the lead in Amazon Freevee’s Western, a half-hour period comedy pilot from Sony Pictures Television, Amazon Studios and Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s Sony TV-based Lord Miller.

Written by Michelle Morgan, Western is set in the 1800s. It follows Polly (Konkle), a young high-society woman from Philadelphia who travels out west on a desperate quest for a husband only to discover that she has been catfished by a teenage boy. Comedian, writer and actor Larry Wilmore has been tapped to host the 46th Annual Humanitas Prizes, which return as an in-person event on September 9, 2022 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

Tommy Morgan, a harmonica soloist who contributed to hundreds of movie and TV shows including “Roots” and “Dances With Wolves,” died June 23. He was 89.

Morgan played on film soundtracks and record dates going back to the early 1950s. His estimated 7,000 recording sessions, according to statistics on his website, suggest that more people have heard his harmonica work than that of any other player of the instrument.

That’s Morgan’s harmonica on Quincy Jones’ “Sanford and Son” theme, Mike Post’s “Rockford Files” theme and the scores for numerous shows including “Maverick,” “The Waltons,” “The Dukes of Hazzard,” “China Beach,” “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Family Guy.”

He played on the Emmy-winning score for “Roots” and its sequel, “Roots: The Next Generations.” And his bass harmonica was the signature sound of Arnold Ziffel, the pig on “Green Acres.”

Comedian and social media star Tamera “Tee” Kissen has been cast opposite Jack Harlow in the remake of 1992 Wesley Snipes/Woody Harrelson comedy “White Men Can’t Jump,” Variety can exclusively reveal.

The remake has been in the works since 2017 when it first emerged “Black-ish” creator Kenya Barris and Doug Hall were working on a script rebooting the film.

Earlier this year it was revealed Jack Harlow had been cast, marking the rapper’s feature film debut, playing the role Harrelson originated. Snipes’ part has yet to be cast. Charles Kidd II, known professionally as Calmatic, is set to direct.

The original film, which was written and directed by Ron Shelton, tells the story of two street basketballers who get off to a bad start before eventually teaming up.

Kissen, who has appeared on MTV’s “Wild N’ Out,” will play “Sheila” in the pic, a role that wasn’t in the original.

Williams joins previously announced series lead Shanola Hampton in the project along with fellow cast member Mark-Paul Gosselaar.

The show is built around the fact that, in any given year, more than 600,000 people are reported missing in the U.S. More than half that number are people of color that the country seems to forget about. Public relations specialist Gabi Mosley (Hampton) — who was once herself one of those forgotten ones — and her crisis management team now make sure there is always someone looking out for the forgotten missing people. But unbeknownst to anyone, this everyday hero is hiding a chilling secret of her own.

Williams will star in the pilot as Margaret Reed. A keen observer of human behavior, Margaret is a crisis manager at Mosley and Associates, and the mother figure to her whole team of associates.

A “feel-good” medical procedural from Michael Strahan, Constance Schwartz-Morini and “The Resident” executive producer Marc Halsey is in development at ABC, Variety has learned.

Titled “The Front Line,” the potential series is centered around Sebastian “Bass” Clark, a professional athlete-turned-doctor who left the front line of the football field to start over on the front lines of healthcare as a medical resident — a transition that a handful of real-life NFL players have actually made. The project follows Bass and an ensemble of doctors and staff at a prestigious Pittsburgh hospital as they navigate high-stakes medical cases with all the adrenaline, warmth and big-heartedness of a great sports movie.
