The Dead Thing opens with an extended montage that gives us a look at Alex and the dead-end routine that takes up her waking hours. Her job is a dead-end position that has something to do with layouts and printing and her social life is a stream of one-nighters arraigned via a hookup app named Friktion, a name that’s meant to evoke the feeling of skin on skin, but serves as an omen of the conflict it’s about to bring her way.

Throw in some Uv light therapy and avoiding her roommate Kara and that’s her existence, I say existence, because it seems a bit of a stretch to call it living. For all intents and purposes, she could be the dead thing the title speaks of.

Marvel Studios didn't regain the rights to the X-Men and Fantastic Four until 2019. That was the year Dark Phoenix came out and, thanks to delays caused by the pandemic, The New Mutants received its theatrical release the following year.

Rather than rush straight to rebooting the X-Men in the wake of those disasters, Marvel Studios has slowly teased the idea of characters like Ms. Marvel and Namor having the mutant gene. As for the Fantastic Four, when they debut this summer, it will be in another reality rather than as part of the Sacred Timeline.

While much has been said about a post-Avengers: Secret Wars "reboot," it's clear the groundwork is being laid for mutants to feel like an organic part of this world rather than them just magically appearing on Earth-616. That's evident from the introduction of Adamantium in Captain America: Brave New World.

It's quickly become apparent that we're going to spend the next few years dealing with a lot of X-Men casting rumours. However, if Avengers: Secret Wars ends with a soft reboot of the MCU (the prevailing theory among fans), then we may meet the team for the first time in 2027.

We also wouldn't discount the idea of Marvel Studios' X-Men reboot being released two years from now to kick off the "Mutant Saga" in style. That would certainly go some way in explaining all this recent chatter about the team, anyway.

Today, scooper @MyTimeToShineH brings word that Jurassic World Dominion star DeWanda Wise is "being considered for the role of Storm in the X-Men reboot." There's been speculation about her starring in the movie for a while, though it's an interesting possibility seeing as Wise is 40.

Nearly 35 years after creating Deadpool, Rob Liefeld has reached his boiling point with Marvel.

The comic book creator, who conceived the character in a 1990 issue of New Mutants, publicly cut ties with Marvel as he recounted being snubbed at the July 2024 premiere of Deadpool & Wolverine.

“It was meant to embarrass, diminish, defeat me,” he said in the latest episode of his Robservations podcast, which was titled ‘Marvel: Access Denied!’

The description of the episode reads: “Why I left Marvel Entertainment and won’t look back.”

He recalled being ignored by Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige on the red carpet before finding out he and his family were not invited to the afterparty, the final straw for Liefeld. Meanwhile, Liefeld posed on the carpet with creatives from the movie but later learned those photos were deleted, as he believes they were only taken to appease him.

Rob Liefeld, the legendary comic book artist behind Deadpool, has officially severed ties with Marvel, citing ongoing frustrations and a lack of recognition. Liefeld co-created the Merc with a Mouth in 1990 alongside Fabian Nicieza. Since then, he has had a rocky relationship with Marvel for decades, but the final straw came during the promotion of Deadpool & Wolverine. Feeling sidelined at the New York premiere and left out of key events, he publicly announced his departure from the company.

Liefeld has long been a vocal advocate for creators receiving fair acknowledgment, particularly when their work fuels billion-dollar franchises. His issues with Marvel aren’t new, but the apparent snub at Deadpool & Wolverine solidified his decision to move on. He expressed disappointment over how Marvel Studios handled the situation, contrasting it with his positive experiences during the first two Deadpool films under 20th Century Fox.

The closest we've come to a solid update on Marvel Studios' X-Men reboot is a report from the trades revealing The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes scribe Michael Lesslie is penning the screenplay.

Who knows how much has changed since then but, as far as we're aware, no director is attached and Lesslie may not even be the current writer on the project.

Despite that, the casting rumours continue coming in thick and fast. Yesterday, we shared a breakdown of the actors who are supposedly in the running for X-Men. And today, we have possible Mister Sinister casting!

According to insider @MyTimeToShineH, Marvel Studios is eyeing Dune, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, and Skyfall star Javier Bardem to play the iconic X-Men villain in the MCU. You may recall that he was once said to be in line to play The Fantastic Four: First Steps' Galactus.

Sony Pictures' Kraven the Hunter is now available on Digital platforms, and its final box office numbers are in.

The studio's latest Ssu movie took in just $59 million worldwide over the course of its box office run. While this doesn't put it on the same level as something like 20th Century Fox's The New Mutants (just over $20 million), for example, factoring in Kraven's budget - reportedly over $150 million before P&a - and length of time in theaters marks it as one of the lowest-grossing superhero movies of all time (even the much-maligned Madame Web managed to pass $100M).

Kraven's failure may have effectively served as the final nail in the coffin for these Spider-Man-less Spider-Man spin-offs, but there may be life in the Ssu yet. Deadline recently reported that Sony is "taking this misfire very seriously," and "has a reset in store."

Stranger Things star Sadie Sink is supposedly being eyed for the role of Jean Grey and, according to scooper @MyTimeToShineH, Wicked's Cynthia Erivo is "one of the actors Marvel has been eyeing for Storm."

Sink is 22 and Erivo is 38, so that's a big age difference between the two team members. However, it's possible Marvel Studios is casting a wide net and has yet to decide whether we're getting an established team of Uncanny X-Men or a younger group of First Class-style mutants.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has done a great job with major villains from the comics and obscure foes, with some of them rising to a level of their own, striking fear into the hearts of some of the franchise's best heroes. Sadly, many of the McU's best villains have come and gone. The franchise does have a problem of killing evil characters in their first appearance, which is something Marvel has continuously received criticism for.

However, that does not mean that the MCU does not know how to handle villains well. From Thanos to Loki and more, Marvel has focused on several different types of villains, with some being fully evil while others are more complex than that. The McU's upcoming movies will introduce some exciting villains, like Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom, and they could learn a lesson from the villains in the franchise who made even heroes fear them.

After Hugh Jackman's return as Wolverine, a new Avengers: Doomsday theory suggests the X-Men character could explain Doctor Doom's arrival in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. 2024 was a slim year for Marvel Studios, which only released one film. Still, Deadpool & Wolverine broke several records, becoming the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time and joining the pantheon of the best MCU movies. The project saw the return of many stars from Fox's X-Men franchise and more, with Jackman's decision to come back as Wolverine leading to a whole new version of Logan.

While Ryan Reynolds does not want to star in another Deadpool movie, the Merc With a Mouth and Jackman's new Wolverine are still likely to appear in one or both of the next two Avengers movies. Black Cat's introduction in the Spider-Man: No Way Home follow-up makes perfect sense.

Nobody remembers who Peter Parker is and the comics have established that, early on at least, Felicia has zero interest in the man beneath the mask. Reeling from the loss of Mj, the wall-crawler heading down a dark path seems like a logical next step and Black Cat would surely facilitate that after getting her claws into him.

Spider-Man franchise producer Amy Pascal was asked directly about the Taylor-Joy/Black Cat rumours at a recent press event and responded, "She would be fantastic. She’s amazing, [but] we’re not quite at that stage yet.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga may have underperformed, but Anya Taylor-Joy has still established herself as a highly bankable and in-demand star, so it was probably only a matter of time before a major superhero franchise came calling.

According to Daniel Richtman, Taylor-Joy is being "eyed" for an undisclosed role in Spider-Man 4.

We're not sure if she's actually in talks or is simply someone Marvel/Sony is interested in, but we have previously heard that the studios were in the process of casting a new female lead.

Taylor-Joy is coming off a banner year, planting her flag in two separate tentpole franchises after appearing in Dune: Part 2 in a spoilery role and taking on leading lady duties in George Miller's Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.

I'm surprised that the last three superhero movie franchises developed by Marvel and DC, outside the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the DC Universe, have all ended in the same disappointing way. In the last few decades, there have been many attempts at adapting epic events and characters from Marvel and DC Comics into some huge and expansive live-action movie franchises. I'm not alone in favoring Marvel Studios' ever-growing MCU, while the new Dcu, under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran, is also looking promising, but not all superhero movie franchises have been so lucky.

A brilliant new Deadpool & Wolverine theory provides a strong explanation for the confusion of 20th Century Fox's X-Men franchise timeline. Despite being set firmly in Phase 5 of the MCU, 2024's Deadpool & Wolverine also advanced Fox's X-Men film series, which kicked off with 2000's X-Men and came to an end with 2020's The New Mutants. Led by Ryan Reynolds, the Deadpool franchise became the most popular corner of the X-Men universe, thanks in part to its separation from Fox's otherwise-confusing X-Men franchise timeline.

Deadpool & Wolverine paid homage to Fox's X-Men franchise, and bridged the gap between Fox's universe and the MCU itself. Many expected Fox's universe, now officially dubbed Earth-10005, to be destroyed in Deadpool & Wolverine, with Ryan Reynolds' titular Merc with a Mouth entering the McU's Earth-616 permanently, but the door has instead been left open for more adventures in Fox's X-Men universe to be explored.

The Gorge, a new high-concept sci-fi horror romance (we're ticking quite a few boxes here) movie directed by Scott Derrickson, is set to premiere on Apple TV+ on February 14, and the first trailer has now been released online.

The film stars Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy as two elite snipers who accept positions on either side of a mysterious gorge.

Teller's character (Levi) is told he's there to guard the gate to Hell (whether he means literally or metaphorically remains to be seen), and that he is to have no contact with the sniper in the opposite tower (Taylor-Joy's Drasa).

Of course, they eventually begin to communicate and strike up something of a medium-distance relationship, and when Levi falls while attempting to cross to the other side, Drasa straps on a parachute and follows him down.

Anya Taylor-Joy, the same actress who’s now a Hollywood powerhouse, once believed The Witch would be her last role. Sounds wild, right? In 2016, Taylor-Joy’s breakout as Thomasin in Robert Eggers’ eerie period horror was met with rave reviews. But while critics sang her praises, she seriously questioned her future.

“I thought I’d never work again,” she admitted on THR’s Awards Chatter podcast. Imagine that—her very first major film role, and she’s having a full-on crisis. The actress even had a meltdown when she saw the movie for the first time at Sundance. “Rob showed us the film maybe two hours before the audience screening, and I was devastated. I thought, ‘I’ve let down everyone I love.’” Yep, she was in tears. Who knew?

Rob Liefeld was one of Marvel’s biggest artists before he left with six others to form Image Comics in 1992. As such, Liefeld drew Deadpool only a handful of times before breaking off on his own. Recent years have seen the artist produce more comics starring Wade Wilson, but now that Liefeld has announced he’ll be leaving Marvel once more following the wrap-up of the current Deadpool Team-Up miniseries, it seems like the perfect time to look back on the artist’s best work for his signature character.

I think we can all agree that Lobo and Deadpool are two of the most beloved characters from their respective companies. Even when DC doesn't know what to do with him, Lobo remains one of their most entertaining characters. Meanwhile, Deadpool plays a big part in keeping the lights on over at Marvel, both onscreen and on-panel. Their bombastic personalities are why I'm such a fan of them both.

That in mind, one thing needs to be said: Lobo is just the original version of Deadpool. Before you start ripping me to shreds, I'd like you to hear me out first. There are a handful of MCU movies dated after Avengers: Secret Wars but there's been no word on exactly when the X-Men reboot will be released. While we know that Michael Lesslie (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes) is penning the screenplay, updates have otherwise been few and far between.

Some still stand out from the crowd, and I've always believed Noriko Ashida, aka Surge, to be one of them. From her early days as an Academy X student to recently joining Forge's X-Force, she's been a personal favorite, and I'm left shocked and disappointed by her recent death in X-Force.

X-Force #5 continues the teams battle against the ultra-strong Nuklo as he attempted to link Nexus Points and bring untold numbers of monsters into the world. It was a dire situation (as they always are), with Nuklo's only real weakness being electricity. As all the other heroes failed, I could see a huge heroic moment on the horizon for Nori.
