The main character suffers from repressed grief and anger at his mother's addiction and his father's death, which is implied to be a possible suicide. Twice he stands by a subway and looks like he might jump or fall in the tracks, which is how his father died. More than once he has a breakdown.
The film is mostly hopeful, while dealing with very serious issues. The teens in the film are around 17 and older, and engage in very risky behavior.
