Janet McTeer In Negotiations To Star As Professor Minerva McGonagall In HBO's Harry Potter TV Series

HBO's "Harry Potter" TV series may have just found its Professor Minerva McGonagall, and in the tradition of the late, great Dame Maggie Smith, the character will be played by another decorated actress of stage and screen. Deadline reports that Janet McTeer, the two-time Oscar nominee and Tony Winner who was recently seen in FX's "The Old Man," is "in negotiations" to take on the role.
McTeer has been acting on screen since the 1980s, earning accolades for turns in movies like "Albert Nobbs" and "Tumbleweed" and taking memorable roles in Netflix's "Ozark," "Jessica Jones," and more. Most recently, she appeared opposite Jeff Bridges in the aforementioned FX drama, and played the goddess Hera in the Greek pantheon series "Kaos." McTeer also had a memorable part in 2022's comedic horror hit "The Menu," and earned an Emmy nod for playing the wife of Winston Churchill in the 2009 miniseries "Into the Storm.

Whether it was Zoe Saldaña calling out her husband’s beautiful hair during her acceptance speech or June Squibb claiming that she’s really Bill Skarsgård in drag, the 97th Oscars on Sunday were chock-full of good, bag and fugly moments.
Here are all the moments that made us go hmmm.
So Good: Oscar gave a collective hug to fire victims by opening the show with a chill-inducing ode to our beloved L.A. with iconic moments from Rocky III, La La Land, Grand Canyon, La Bamba and The Big Lebowski, followed with gorgeous performances by Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande.
So bad it was good: It felt a little strange to transition out of such a sentimental opener to the image of “four-time Oscar viewer” Conan O’Brien crawling out of Demi Moore’s corpse.

February 24 marked the first anniversary of Star Trek: Discovery actor Kenneth Mitchell’s death following five years of living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Als), commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Mitchell, post-diagnosis, made the most of every moment as a husband, father, friend, and actor, and it’s well worth taking a look back at what he accomplished during his 49 years on Earth.
Hailing from Toronto, Canada, Mitchell initially gained traction as a model before shifting to acting. He amassed nearly 50 film and television credits before his death. Among those credits were the movies Miracle and Captain Marvel, recurring or series regular roles on Odyssey 5, Jericho, Ghost Whisperer, Switched at Birth, The Astronaut Wives Club, Frequency, Nancy Drew, and The Old Man, as well as numerous guest shots. He was, of course, best known for portraying the Klingon characters Kol, Kol-Sha, and Tenavik, as well as Aurellio,...

John Lithgow, 79, recently confirmed to ScreenRant that he said “yes” to playing Albus Dumbledore in HBO’s upcoming small screen adaptation of J. K. Rowling’s hit books. The Hollywood Reporter reported earlier this month that Lithgow was in talks for the role.
“Well, it came as a total surprise to me,” the veteran actor said. “I just got the phone call up at the Sundance Film Festival for yet another film, and it was not an easy decision because it’s going to define me for the last chapter of my life, I’m afraid. But I’m very excited. Some wonderful people are turning their attention back to Harry Potter. That’s why it’s been such a hard decision. I’ll be about 87 years old at the wrap party,...

It’s always fitting that the Screen Actors Guild Awards take place at Los Angeles’s Shrine Auditorium, because this awards show is a kind of shrine itself: An occasion for Hollywood’s best and brightest to come and pay tribute, with devotional flourishes, to the art of acting. Now, the 2025 SAG Awards winners list has been fully revealed, and indeed you heard the word “craft” a few times: Actors love to pepper that word into their acceptance speeches as if they’re back at the Actors Studio.

Following recent reports claiming that both Mark Strong and Mark Rylance could be in contention to play Albus Dumbledore in HBO's Harry Potter series, we're now hearing that John Lithgow is officially in talks for the role.
Lithgow has appeared in a multitude of film and TV projects over the years, including Dexter, Footloose, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and Interstellar. More recently, he played key roles in Conclave and FX's prematurely cancelled The Old Man.
Jeff Sneider believes Rylance was offered the part, but declined after his wife passed away.

HBO is zeroing in on a key castmember for its Harry Potter series.
The premium cabler is in talks with John Lithgow to play Albus Dumbledore, the headmaster of the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. News of Lithgow’s potential involvement follows THR’s reporting that British actor Paapa Essiedu (I May Destroy You) is in discussions to play Professor Severus Snape.
HBO declined comment.
The Harry Potter show is described as a “faithful” adaptation of author J.K. Rowling’s seven-book series chronicling the young wizards years at Hogwarts and his eventual face-off with the evil Lord Voldemort. Warner Bros. Television Group chairman and CEO said in November that “as somebody who is a huge fan of books, the opportunity to get to explore them in maybe a little bit more in-depth than you can in just a two-hour film, that’s the whole reason we’re on this journey.

HBO’s series adaptation of “Harry Potter” may have found its Dumbledore. John Lithgow is close to closing a deal to portray the iconic character, according to multiple media reports.
The series is expected to begin filming this summer in Leavesden. Previously, all eight of the Warner Bros. “Harry Potter” movies were filmed in the English commercial area.
“We appreciate that such a high-profile series will draw a lot of rumor and speculation. As we make our way through pre-production, we will only confirm details as we finalize deals,” HBO said in a statement to TheWrap.
The headmaster of Hogwarts was previously portrayed by Richard Harris in the film adaptations of “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” and “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.” Michael Gambon then took over the role in the six other “Harry Potter” films, and Jude Law portrayed the character in the “Fantastic Beasts” franchise.

Are the 2025 Critics Choice Awards about to be a repeat of the recent Emmys and Golden Globes?
Television awards faves Hacks, Shōgun, and Baby Reindeer are expected to dominate Friday’s ceremony, which was delayed twice in the wake of the devastating Los Angeles wildfires.
Season 3 of Max’s laugh riot Hacks is predicted to walk away with four trophies: comedy series, comedy actress (Jean Smart), comedy supporting actress (Hannah Einbinder), and comedy supporting actor (Paul W. Downs). In fact, the only category Hacks is expected to lose is Best Comedy Actor … because it doesn’t compete there. Instead, our odds-makers believe Adam Brody (Nobody Wants This) had better start preparing a speech.
Likewise, Season 1 of FX’s historical epic Shōgun has four races locked up, per our rankings: drama series, drama actress (Anna Sawai), drama actor (Hiroyuki Sanada), and drama supporting actor (Tadanobu Asano). The remaining statuette is Best Drama Supporting Actress,...

Spoiler Warning: This story includes major plot developments for the entire first season of “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew,” currently streaming on Disney+.
In 2017, when filmmaker Jon Watts and his writing partner Christopher Ford first approached Lucasfilm with their idea for a new standalone “Star Wars” movie, all they really had was the bare essentials.
“The only thing that I pitched was, ‘It’s about a group of kids that get lost in the “Star Wars” galaxy that have to get home again,’” he says. “That was as much as we had worked out.”
Watts’ career exploded that year with the release of “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” and by the time he was able to untangle himself from Spidey’s web following the release of 2021’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” Lucasfilm’s focus had pivoted to making TV series for Disney+.

Actor Faran Tahir is set to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the upcoming Disney+ series ‘Vision Quest,’ a spinoff from WandaVision. Tahir will reprise his role as Raza, the leader of the Ten Rings terrorist organization, a character he first played in 2008’s Iron Man. This marks Tahir’s first MCU appearance in nearly two decades, making his return a noteworthy moment for fans of the franchise.
Raza’s story was last seen in Iron Man, where he orchestrated Tony Stark’s kidnapping to force the creation of a Jericho missile. Although the character appeared to meet his end in the film, the MCU has shown time and again that death isn’t always permanent.
The series will follow Vision, played by Paul Bettany, as he attempts to regain his memories and redefine his purpose after the events of Avengers: Infinity War and WandaVision.

Marvel Studios’ upcoming Vision series with Paul Bettany is going back to the source code: Faran Tahir is joining the show as Raza, the role he originated in the studio’s first feature film, 2008’s “Iron Man.”
Bettany is returning as the ghostly white version of the synthezoid he first played in the 2015 film “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” and James Spader is reprising his role from “Age of Ultron” as the titular villainous AI. Todd Stashwick (“Star Trek: Picard”) is also playing an unspecified character.
Resurrecting Tahir’s character nearly 20 years after he first appeared will mark the longest gap between appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to date. That’s an even more impressive feat considering that Raza — best known for kidnapping Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark, the inciting incident that leads Start to become Iron Man — was seemingly killed halfway through “Iron Man” by the film’s main villain,...

Disney+’s Vision series is bringing back another familiar face from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Faran Tahir will reprise his role as villain Raza in the upcoming Marvel TV show, a role he played in the original 2008 Iron Man movie, our sister site Deadline reports. In that film, Raza was the leader of the terrorist group known as Ten Rings who imprisoned Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark. Raza was betrayed and seemingly killed by Jeff Bridges’ Obadiah Stane — but we all know death is merely a state of mind when it comes to comic books.

Exclusive: Faran Tahir will appear in the Paul Bettany-led series Vision Quest, a WandaVision spinoff series for Disney+, sources confirm to Deadline.
Tahir will reprise the role of the villainous Raza, leader of the terrorist organization the 10 Rings who tried to kill Tony Stark in Iron Man.
Details are scarce on the new project, but as we previously reported, the Marvel Vision spinoff has been in development at Disney+ since 2022 and was picked up to series in May. It is believed to be centered on Vision (Bettany) as he tries to regain his memory and humanity. After Thanos killed him in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War, Vision returned in 2021’s WandaVision.
In addition to Bettany returning to the role he has played in three Marvel films and in WandaVision, James Spader will reprise his MCU role of Ultron. Todd Stashwick will also appear in an undisclosed role.

Jeff Bridges has tragically lost his family home in Malibu due to the raging wildfires continuing to sweep across Los Angeles.
The Oscar-winning actor’s rep confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter on Thursday that the house his late parents bought decades ago, which he now shares with his family, was burned down in the Palisades Fire. The home was inherited by Bridges, his brother Beau Bridges and their sister, TMZ reported.
The actor, most known for his roles in The Big Lebowski, True Grit and, more recently, The Old Man, primarily lives at his home in Santa Barbara, California, which he shares with his wife, Susan Geston. He has also had some personal battles in recent years, revealing he was diagnosed with lymphoma in October 2020. He later shared in September 2021 that his cancer was in remission.

As someone whose career revolves around watching far too much television, even I had to stop and think after reading what Kathy Bates’ SAG Awards nomination came for this morning. No, not “Matlock,” the hit CBS revival I’ve already reviewed, but Bates’ other SAG nomination — the one for “The Great Lillian Hall.” Premiering on the last day of Emmy eligibility, the HBO film stars Jessica Lange, Lily Rabe, and Pierce Brosnan in a story about an actress battling her fading memory as she prepares for a new, juicy role on Broadway. It’s the kind of production that should be catnip for awards voters — a drama about actors, starring legends, and hinging on an immensely personal obstacle — yet “The Great Lillian Hall” wasn’t treated with much respect, earning zero recognition from the Emmys and garnering only a few Critics Choice nominations and a CSA nod… until today.

Now that 2024 has come to a close, it’s official, Netflix once again handed out the most cancellations in the calendar year – though at this point, I don’t think anyone will find this surprising. While the streaming platform has gotten better as the years have gone by in giving shows final seasons and the chances to establish themselves with audiences, the streaming platform continues to have some of the biggest cancellation rates in the business and 2024 was no different.
In total, Netflix canceled 16 shows in 2024 while also handing six additional shows their walking papers with final season orders which are about as close to cancellations as you can get the only difference being that those lucky six shows will get to actually wrap up their runs with proper sendoffs. So when you combine the two groups, Netflix decided to end a whopping 22 shows in 2024 be it by canceling them directly or ordering final seasons.

When Netflix’s The Diplomat returned for a second season in October, a year and a half after the release of its breakout first season, fans’ excitement was mixed with some disappointment as Season 2 consisted of just 6 episodes, down from 8 in Season 1 and a season length typically associated with British series and rarely seen in American ones.
The Diplomat is not alone. A number of popular series which released their second season over the past few months — or are set to do so in January — are coming back with fewer episodes. Like The Diplomat, fellow Netflix drama The Recruit‘s upcoming second season includes just 6 episodes, down from 8 in season 1. The upcoming second season of Netflix’s comedy Xo, Kitty has 8 episodes, down from 10 in Season 1.
The trend is not limited to Netflix. Hulu’s thriller Tell Me Lies‘ recent second season consisted of 8 episodes, down from 10 in Season 1.

A one-season sci-fi series has been cancelled by Apple TV+ despite its promising cliffhanger ending. For the past couple of months, there have been relatively few major renewals and cancellations. But with the year rushing to a close, streamers have also been in a sprint to announce some last-minute decisions.
Just this week, FX cancelled the Jeff Bridges action thriller series The Old Man, which did not quite capture the same attention as its buzzy first season after an extended break between episodes. Although it had long been presumed dead, after failing to make a splash with subscribers, Netflix made it official and axed Girls5eva after three seasons. It's not all bad news, with Hulu picking up Tell Me Lies for another run after the young adult adaption grew its audience. However, for one sci-fi standout, it's the end of the road.

FX's thrilling action series The Old Man returned for an explosive second season in late 2024, but FX canceled the show before season 3. Based on the eponymous novel by Thomas Perry, the series concerns retired CIA operative Dan Chase (Jeff Bridges) who comes out of hiding after thwarting an attempt against his life. The series only grew and expanded across its first season, with drama between Dan and his estranged daughter (Alia Shawkat) as well as his complicated relationship with FBI Agent Harold Harper (played by John Lithgow).
Season 2 saw Dan and Harold travel to Afghanistan to rescue Emily from Hamzad, but it's never that simple in the world of the ex-cia operative. With Emily learning her true parentage, Dan's mission wasn't as easy as he once thought. Though the first season earned decent marks from critics, season 2 of The Old Man was not met as favorably, and even scored...

We've got a sad update for those of you who are fans of The Old Man on FX. I know that after the first season and when FX renewed the show, so many of you were excited to see more and couldn't wait for The Old Man season 2 to come out. It finally did premiere in September 2024. However, the season 2 finale now serves as the series finale.
FX has chosen to cancel The Old Man after two seasons, per TVLine. According to the news outlet, part of the reason was the long two-year gap between the first and second seasons. And really, that was out of production's hands. The writers strike and actors strike that began in the summer of 2023 paused all filming and work on the show, just like basically almost everything else in Hollywood.
And it looks like even though most productions, especially the bigger ones, have been...

FX has canceled its drama series The Old Man after two seasons.
The series, starring Jeff Bridges as a retired CIA operative pressed back into action, performed well in its first season in 2022 and earned two Emmy nominations, for Bridges’ lead performance and cinematography.
Production on season two stopped during last year’s dual labor strikes, leading to a gap of more than two years between seasons – not unusual for a streaming series but hard to overcome for a show that originates on a linear channel, as The Old Man did on FX. The cancellation comes about eight weeks after season two aired its finale in late October.
FX declined comment.
The second — and now final — season is up for three Critics Choice Awards in January: best drama series, best actor in a drama for Bridges and best supporting actor in a drama for John Lithgow.

2024 has been a brutal year for streaming series being cancelled, with everything from The Acolyte to Kaos to Dead Boy Detectives feeling the steel of the axe over the past twelve months. It's been so brutal, we wrote a whole piece about it — which you can find here. But while we might've hoped we'd seen the last of the year's cancellations as 2025 rapidly approaches, it simply wasn't to be. Per Deadline's reporting, FX and Disney+'s Jeff Bridges led series The Old Man is the latest victim of the content cull and has been dropped after just two seasons.
Created by Robert Levine and Jonathan E. Steinberg, and based on Thomas Perry’s 2017 bestseller of the same name, the show — which co-starred John Lithgow, Amy Brenneman and Alia Shawkat — followed Dan Chase (Bridges), a former CIA man whose off-grid existence is disrupted when his past life catches up with him.

FX is not moving forward with a season three for the acclaimed series The Old Man.
Jeff Bridges and John Lithgow led the cast of the drama series, which achieved major success after its season one premiere, but suffered from a long gap between its two seasons.
The show was unfortunately hit with several shutdowns along the way. The series originally started production on season one in 2019, but was shut down because of the pandemic. When Bridges was diagnosed with cancer, the show was delayed again.
Season one premiere in June 2022 and was the most-watched FX series debut on Hulu at the time, but season two didn’t premiere until September 2024.
The 2+ year wait for season two was caused by a shut down due to the WGA strike. By the time season two arrived, anticipation had died down and ratings couldn’t reach the season one peaks, according to Deadline.

“The Old Man” finished his last mission on FX.
The spy thriller series, starring Jeff Bridges, John Lithgow, Amy Brenneman and Alia Shawkat, has been canceled at the cable network after two seasons. Though it held its critical acclaim, the show failed to keep the momentum from its celebrated first season following an extended production hiatus credited to the Hollywood strikes.
“The Old Man” premiered in June 2022 on FX and became the network’s most-watched series premiere since January 2021, as well as FX’s most-watched series premiere on Hulu at the time.
