The King of Kings

  • Must see movie

King of Kings is an extraordinary movie. I was so caught up in it if they had said in the credits "Jesus as played by himself" I would have believed it. The scenes of the little blind boy finding his way to Jesus, and the interaction between Jesus and the little children stand out as the high points of the movie. There is a "healing" while with the little children that stands out as one of the finest movie moments ever.

It is a silent movie, but if you get caught up like me, you will swear there was talking as you look back on it.

I saw it in May of 1977 at the 50th anniversary of the Graumanns Chinese theater in Hollywood. It had opened 50 years ago that night with its first movie being King of Kings. Interesting, the next night was the premier of the first Star Wars movie.

Mr. DeMille's daughter or niece shared anecdotes about the filming after the movie. For example, there is a seen during the last supper, where, after everyone gets up and walks away a dove comes and lands on the table by the holy grail and gets lost in the lighting special effect. She informed us it was not planned.

She told us the movie played somewhere in the world every night for 46 years. And in South America, people would get on their knees in the theaters after the performance.

    Powerful movie and very moving.

  • Maybe the worst movie you will ever enjoy

Bad news: Born Losers is the most aptly titled movie of all time. Good news: It's wonderfully enjoyable. It is a movie that, if made 5 years later, would be much more violent and graphic. It was made right before Hollywood relaxed any attempts to keep bad language and graphic violence out of its movies. That makes it funny and worth watching. The acting, apart from Jeremy Slate, was well, not acting. Tom Laughlin, like David Carradine in Kung Fu, created a character committed to peace, but couldn't avoid a fight to save his life. Jane Russell was wonderfully camp and should never have shown up. What makes this so much more watchable than Billy Jack is it has few overt references to political correctness and does not try to comment on all of societies ills. It is vintage mid sixties Hollywood with no substance or redeeming social value. Isn't that the Supreme Courts definition of obscenity?. watch it.

  • Fascinating insight into the man of steel

Being 50 years old and having grown up on George Reeves and Chris Reeve as Superman, I was a little dubious of a new version of my hero. I was afraid it would be too politically correct, or too overdone for the newer generations. Thankfully, my frets were unwarranted.

This is a great show. It's fascinating to watch Clark slowly learn what his capabilities are. The actor does a great job of mixing humility with growing assurance of his abilities. It will be fun to watch him continue to develop.

Mark Rosenbaum has the best lines in the show. He has created a terrific character and it is impossible not to really like Lex. It will be hard to watch him slide.

Allison Mack is also very good as is Kristin Kreuk. Unfortunately, the supporting guys seem a bit unnecessary.

And of course, Annette O'Toole and John Schneider class up any program they're on. I just wish Jonathan Kent would cut Lex a little slack. His disdain for Lex is unwarranted...so far.

I hope it lasts. It's fun to watch.
