Funding has dried up." I asked: "How many funding platforms have you explored?" He said: "4… maybe 5." I shared a list of 50+ grant and funding platforms with him. Within 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵, he had strong signals on new funding. No magic. No connections. Just knowing 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 to look. Here's the truth most NGO leaders don't talk about: → It's not that funding doesn't exist. → It's that most organizations only search in 5% of the places it lives. So I'm sharing the full list publicly. Succession Planning (SP). Here's my cheat sheet with 9 questions to prepare successors for a targeted role. One question SP tries to answer is: "How long will it take before a successor is ready to move into a specific role? One way to evaluate this is by considering the 'number of development moves away' a successor is. This prompts a more thoughtful evaluation than simply stating "ready in X years." My cheat sheet has 9 questions to help evaluate: 1. Target Role → What primary role are we developing this person for? 2. Required Skills & Experiences → What are the critical skills and experiences required for success in this role? 3. Validating Requirements → How do we know these are the critical requirements? 4. Existing Gaps → Which skills or experiences does the candidate currently lack? What are we basing this assessment on? 5. Closing Gaps in Current Role → Can the needed development be addressed through opportunities in the successor's current role? 6. Gaining Experience Outside the Current Role → Where else could the person gain these experiences—within or outside the organization? 7. Success Criteria → What would success look like after each move? 8. Timeline → What is the realistic timeframe for completing these development moves? 9. Mapping Development Moves and Actions → Based on the above, what development moves are needed to accelerate readiness? How long will it take? The cheat sheet has additional tips. There are many ways to assess readiness—this is one. Use this resource if you believe it can help. ❓Which parts resonate most? What would you add? Drop your ideas below.  ♻️ Repost to help others develop successors 🔔 Follow Brian Heger for more insights 💾 Save this post for reference Want my cheat sheet? Looking for Grant Funding❓ I spent years at a Foundation that provided funding to dozens of nonprofit organizations. I managed their grant programs, which meant that I read every application and sat in all of the grant-making committee meetings. I saw the decision-making process up close and personal. So I can report that funders are committed to supporting impactful programs that fall within their mission, but …  grant committee members (most of whom are volunteers) may not always be familiar with your organization, projects, client needs, or impact on the community. The best advice I can give: 𝐒𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐀𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐲! 📢 To ensure your proposal stands out, here are a few tips: ➡️𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐊𝐞𝐲: Present your mission and goals in a straightforward manner. Avoid jargon and complex language.  ➡️𝐓𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐚 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲: Share real-life examples and success stories that highlight the impact of your work. ➡️𝐁𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐞: Keep your proposal succinct and to the point. Highlight the most critical information. ➡️𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐎𝐮𝐭𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬: Clearly outline the expected outcomes and how they align with the funder’s priorities. ➡️𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐝𝐞 𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐢𝐝𝐬: Use charts, graphs, and images to illustrate your points and make your proposal visually engaging. 💠By simplifying your presentation, you make it easier for grantors to understand and support your vision. Here’s to creating lasting change … 𝑳𝒆𝒕’𝒔 𝒈𝒆𝒕 𝒈𝒊𝒗𝒊𝒏𝒈! 💵💰💲

I just finished mapping open agriculture, food security, and agritech grants accessible to African organizations. 20+ active opportunities. Funders ranging from the The World Bank, AfDB, EU, Mastercard Foundation, International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), and more. Combined pool: over $500 million. Here’s the insight most organizations miss: the first question isn’t “Which grant should we apply for?” The reality is that the largest grants don’t flow directly to NGOs or startups. Global Agriculture and Food Security Program (GAFSP)’s $20M country-led track, EU Horizon €5–6M calls, AfDB TAAT-II go through governments, research institutions, and accredited implementing partners. African organizations that want access must position themselves as credible implementing partners, not just applicants. That means: - Relationships built ahead of any call - Financial systems that can withstand audits - Governance structures that satisfy compliance teams Co-financing requirements are another signal funders are sending: - Mastercard Foundation FRP → 30% - Ireland’s AADP → 50% - SADC Green Economy → 10% This isn’t stinginess but it’s a capital-readiness test. Funders now reward organizations that can aggregate funding from multiple sources. Standalone grant dependency is increasingly a liability. The structural entry point for agritech startups has never been clearer. Programs like Katapult Africa, AGRO-WELL, CFC’s 28th Call, and Grand Challenges are opening direct non-dilutive pathways for AI, precision agriculture, and digital value-chain startups. Yet many founders still think “grants = NGOs,” which is why this fastest-growing sub-sector has surprisingly little competition. Accessing these opportunities requires more than just a list of grants. Organizations need to understand Capital Pathways, how to: - Pre-position for consortium calls - Structure co-investment vehicles to meet match requirements - Assess which producer groups have the governance and systems to absorb capital In short, capital doesn’t fund problems, it funds organizations equipped to solve them. If you’re an African agricultural NGO, cooperative, or agritech startup and want the full Master Grant Discovery Report with all 20+ opportunities and actionable insights: 👉 Comment “Agric Funding” below and I’ll send it to you. #AgriculturalFinance #ImpactInvesting #GrantFunding #Agritech #CapitalArchitecture #AfricanAgribusiness #ClimateFinance #FoodSecurity

Most people think “fully funded opportunities = Master’s or PhD scholarships.” I recently spoke about the dynamics of fully funded opportunities, and my submission was dismissed mainly because it didn’t fit that narrow framing. It was viewed only through the lens of Master’s and PhD scholarships until I had to step in and educate them. Fully funded doesn’t just mean study abroad. It means learning, traveling, researching, building, and leading without paying out of pocket across many pathways. Fully funded opportunities you should know about • Fellowships – Programs focused on leadership, academic, or professional development, often with mentorship, training, and global exposure. • Exchange Programs – Short- or long-term cultural, academic, or professional exchanges with travel, accommodation, and institutional placements covered. • Leadership Programs – Bootcamps, workshops, networking, and sometimes international placements for emerging leaders. • Research Grants – Funding for research, fieldwork, innovation, or academic projects, covering travel, data collection, equipment, and stipends. • Fully Funded Conferences – Global convenings where flights, accommodation, and registration are covered. • Youth Delegations – Opportunities to represent your country or organization at global dialogues, gaining diplomatic exposure and policy experience. • Accelerator Programs – For entrepreneurs and innovators, offering seed funding, mentorship, business development, and market access. • Think Tank & Policy Programs – Immersive programs focused on governance, development, and policy, with hands-on policy experience and mentorship. • Incubators – Support for idea-stage founders through mentorship, training, workspace, and small funding or stipends. • Residencies (Artistic or Professional) – Funded time and space for creatives, writers, researchers, and innovators to work and present their work. • Study Tours & Immersion Programs – Short-term experiential learning trips with full travel coverage and institutional exposure. • Capacity-Building & Training Programs – Skill-focused programs in areas like climate, diplomacy, AI, education, or development. • Innovation Challenges & Competitions – Fully sponsored pitch events, prize money, mentorship, and exposure. • Short Courses & Executive Programs – Fully funded professional training with tuition waived, travel support, and certificates. • Volunteer & Service Programs – Opportunities to serve while receiving accommodation, stipends, and global experience. • Country-Sponsored Global Programs – Government-funded initiatives offering scholarships, leadership training, and diplomatic exposure. • Policy Labs & Innovation Labs – Spaces to test real-world policy solutions with funding, mentorship, and access to policymakers. Fully funded opportunities are everywhere and they come in more forms than most people realize. Don’t limit yourself to only “scholarships.” Explore widely.

𝐈𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐰 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠, who steps in without chaos? Not a hopeful guess or an emergency promotion. A ready successor! This question alone tells you whether you have succession planning or just optimism. Most organizations think succession planning is about replacing people. It is actually about protecting continuity, culture, and credibility. Here’s a simple but powerful funnel you can use. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐮𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐥 1️⃣ 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐜 𝐂𝐨𝐫𝐞 Start at the top. • What are our 3 to 5 long term business goals? • What capabilities will we need in the next 5 years, not just today? • Are we building leaders for the future market or the past structure? No clarity here means everything below collapses. 2️⃣ 𝐑𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐂𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 Audit Now get practical. List key positions that, if vacant for 60 days, would hurt revenue, culture, or reputation. If: • Time to fill is high • High performers are leaving faster than average employees • Managers say, we do not have promotion ready candidates You do not have a pipeline. You have exposure. 3️⃣ 𝐓𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐌𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 Matrix Divide your team into four quadrants: • High Performance + High Potential • High Performance + Low Potential • Low Performance + High Potential • Low Performance + Low Potential Then ask: Who is ready now? Who can be ready in 12 months? Who needs structured development? This reduces emotional decisions and increases objectivity. 4️⃣ 𝐂𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐀𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐜𝐤 Succession fails when skills grow but values do not. Revisit: • Purpose statement • Strategy alignment • Behavioral standards • Organizational character Future leaders must embody the culture, not just manage KPIs. 5️⃣ 𝐒𝐖𝐎𝐓 Integration Your succession plan must reflect: Strengths Customer loyalty, R and D, employee loyalty Weaknesses High turnover, poor systems, low quality output Opportunities Technology, growing markets, demographic shifts Threats Price wars, new competitors, disruptive innovation If your successors are not trained to handle tomorrow’s threats, your planning is cosmetic. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐬 • Decreased turnover because employees see growth • Higher satisfaction and commitment • Lower hiring risk • Stronger employer brand • Faster internal mobility Succession planning is not a document. It is a living talent system. If your high potential employees feel undervalued or see outsiders promoted over them repeatedly, you are not planning succession. You are planning exits! The organizations that win long term are not the ones with the best strategies on paper. They are the ones with leadership depth. So ask yourself today. If three key people leave this quarter, does your business slow down or stay steady? That 𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐝𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬 your 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 as a 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫. #SumanAgarwal #ICBI #ICBICorporateSolutions

Here's what I would do if I wanted to win my first grant... Coming from someone who's raised over $2mil in #grants for multiple projects. Securing grants isn't about luck. It's about having a repeatable, strategic process. The grant #funding system is complex and fragmented, but you can navigate it successfully. This is my playbook for winning your first grant. 1️⃣ Don't Start with the Search. Start with the Foundation. Before you look for a single dollar, get crystal clear on your project's mission, goals, and desired impact. A compelling, well-defined narrative is your most valuable asset. The clearer you are, the easier it is to find the right funder. This foundational work is critical. I highly recommend GRANTED™️’s “Projects” feature for this—our AI helps you design and refine projects 2️⃣ Create Your Own Proof of Concept. Don't wait for funding to start. Begin executing on the smallest possible scale. Gather testimonials, run a tiny pilot program, document your early results. This "proof of concept" is the single most powerful asset you can bring to a funder. It demonstrates an execution bias, de-risks their investment, and proves your commitment. 3️⃣ Target Micro-Grants to Build a Snowball. Instead of chasing a $100k grant you're not ready for, go after five $2k grants. Micro-grants ($500 - $5,000) are often less competitive and have simpler applications. I've won quite a few of these and I can tell you, they're such a gamechanger. Each "yes" builds your track record, boosts your confidence, and creates a snowball of credibility that makes you more attractive for larger funding down the road. P.S. Here's a $5000 microgrant you can apply for that’s due September 30: https://lnkd.in/gsrAsEPN 4️⃣ Leverage AI for Intelligent Search. Stop wasting hours sifting through irrelevant databases. Use a tool that leverages AI for intelligent matching. GRANTED™️’s platform analyzes your project details to match you with opportunities based on true alignment, complete with an AI-powered match percentage to show you why it’s a fit. This saves countless hours and ensures you're applying for grants you're actually eligible for. 5️⃣ Systematize Your Applications. Grant seeking is a numbers game, but quality can't be sacrificed for quantity. To manage this, create a master template for your project. Better yet, leverage GRANTED™️’s AI Grant Writing Assistant. It pulls key details from your project profile to draft context-aware answers for your applications, helping you craft high-quality proposals in a fraction of the time. If you've won grants before, what tips do you have about securing your first grant? You can create a free GRANTED™️ account at grantedtech.ca. P.S. If you're with an #organization or #accelerator that wants to scale your members' access to funding, let's talk about a #partnership.

In the midst of federal research funding cuts and grant freezes, we need alternative ways to fund science. Here are some opportunities that caught my attention: ▫️ Astera Institute - founded by Jed McCaleb and Seemay Chou, Astera incubates high-leverage science and technology projects at their earliest stages through their residency and open science programs. They back creative, high-agency scientists, engineers and entrepreneurs who are passionate about pursuing open first, high impact and future focused projects, especially innovators whose work isn’t a match for other institutions. https://lnkd.in/g45bPNgP ▫️ Schmidt Sciences - part of Eric and Wendy Schmidt's philanthropic initiatives. Their Polymaths program backs professors and interdisciplinary misfits with $2.5M+ to explore wild, risky ideas, whereas their Fellows program places the world’s best emerging scientists in new research domains. https://lnkd.in/gwNC7Fda ▫️ Simons Foundation - founded by Jim and Marilyn Simons to champion basic science through grant funding. There is currently an open call for high-risk theoretical mathematics, physics and computer science projects of exceptional promise and scientific importance. https://lnkd.in/g5CX-Gmk ▫️ Lux Capital - Lux just committed $100 million to back academic research that also has commercial potential, such as biotech and artificial intelligence. They offer both counsel and capital to pathbreaking scientists and help push their research and careers forward. https://lnkd.in/gt5vKe_m ▫️ Decentralized Science (DeSci) - science-focused decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs) are communities and platforms that use blockchain technology and decentralization to reform funding and collaboration in science. e.g. 🔹 ValleyDAO - funds and provides translational support for synthetic biology research 🔹 VitaDAO - funds aging research and democratizes ownership of intellectual property 🔹 Molecule AG - funding and tokenization platform for biopharma intellectual property What other funding models or programs are you excited about?
