NEW BRUNSWICK — The municipalities that today are known as New Brunswick and Highland Park — separated by the Raritan River — were settled in the 1600s. According to Highland Park's official website, hpboro.com, a ferry service was run between the settlements by a series of private owners until a wood-plank bridge was constructed in 1795. This undated photograph was taken on the New Brunswick side. The bridge was dismantled in 1848, then reconstructed in 1853. A stone-arch bridge was built in 1892 and widened in 1925. The Albany Street Bridge has undergone many renovations, but the stone base constructed in 1892 still serves as its foundation.
