REFLECTION 2: WEEK 2

Voice has a great impact on effective teaching. Using your voice appropriately makes
students learn better. So, the teacher should exercise his\ her voice like actors. Voice can be
really effective in ELT. Using appropriately pitch, rate, volume and quality determine whether
we use ineffective voice or effective voice. As a teacher, we have to control these features
while speaking. If we talk about something very exciting, the rate is speedy. If we want to
share something very tragic, the speed of voice should be slow. In fact, these vocal variations
change according to the meaning that we want to convey. So, poem activity was extremely
useful for showing these vocal variation. For, we read the poems without taking care of pitch,
volume, rate and quality one by one. It was enjoyable and funny. We could discriminate the
vocal feature that we have to emphasize. If one of your students sleep in your lesson, you will
use high pitch, volume or you can choose to speak in speedy tone of the voice. It will draw
attention. Sometimes, you can use in order to emphasize the meaning you consider as
important. However, there is no need to exaggerate these variations.

The second activity, happening activity, is an enjoyable and creative one. We imitiated the
picture that our teacher showed us. We tried to be one of the characters like sea, bridge,
towers. It is related with the creativity, encouraging cooperation. Also, it is a kind of from
interdependence to independence principle in learner autonomy. For, you learn something in a
group. After a while, you are also responsible for your learning too. May-might, asking for in
about what they are, practising that is\ this is\ these\ those, prepositions, adjectives, present
continious, writing a story about what they see, how many-how much, asking some wh
questions and also in creating context, this activity has a great importance and use in ELT.

Mirroring activity is another activity which can be used in ELT department. You have to
do same things with your partner. For example, he\ she is raising his\ her hands, you have to
raise it. It is a kind of harmony in the classroom atmosphere between students and teacher.
There should be a mutual intelligibility between the student and the teacher. Both of them
should understand each other and both of them should be understood by each other. This is
one of the basic rule in the classroom management and good communication between the
teacher and students. We should speak the same language with the student. It is a kind of
harmony and correlation between the teacher and the student. Sometimes, we can understand
some teachers’ lessons better. We have a better communication with some of them. I think,
this is related with speaking the same language.
