I. ABSTRACT
Group 1 of 12 - L is an organization who is affiliated with De La Salle Santiago Zobel School
and was tasked to create a project that would help the people of Sitio Makabuhay. This
project aims to help families, specifically absent parent families, with their family dynamics.
The researchers have decided to focus on three main points for this project: roles,
responsibilities, and relationships. The project will be called “Mahal(aga)” and will be a
workshop consisting of three activities which are Educational Games, Scrapbook Making &
Chore Chart Making to address the three issues found in our research which are forced
maturity, compensation for the absent parent and withdrawal of education. The total cost of
the project will be around PHP 2,595 and the money will be earned through a bake sale done
by members of the organization. Mahal(aga) will help the families residing in Sitio Makabuhay
with their family bonding, chore distribution, and importance of education and relationships.
II. CONTEXT
Economical
This project, Mahal(aga), will connect to the Economical factors that we have in our country
today and will cover the financial needs of the residents in Sitio Makabuhay. A byproduct of
Mahal(aga) will include the promotion of job opportunities that will assist the families in
achieving a more stable lifestyle. With all of this in mind, the families involved will, in turn, be
able to more effectively contribute and do their part for the growth of our society. Those that
are involved in the project will learn different organization techniques that will enforce wise
money spending, saving habits, and proper time management with regards to household
chores and other time-consuming factors within a family.
Political
The project’s political implications will help bring awareness on absent parents present in the
community and how to better handle the situation. This will shed light on the sacrifice,
responsibility, and compensation the families undergo for development and financial stability.
Awareness within the community will motivate their community leaders to provide help. This
help could come in the form of job opportunities and activities within the community for the
family members to participate in. Educating both the youth and adults of absent parent
families will allow for them to realize the implications of their situation on their mental, physical,
and spiritual development - important factors in shaping future catalysts of social change.
Cultural
This project aims to eradicate this belief and prove that every family works in its own unique
way, and absent parent families are “complete” or “traditional” families too. Filipino families
are more often than not very close-knit, therefore instilling the belief that children of Filipino
families are more dependent and are hardly exposed to “the real world.” Due to this, and the
fact that Filipino families do enjoy being so close-knit, it is easy for parents to believe that their
children are not capable of being on their own. This project will show children that they are in
fact capable of being independent, and simultaneously bring a more trustful relationship
between the child and parent. Once all family members create healthy and strong bonds
with one another, all other issues that may arise will be tackled in a more peaceful and
organized manner.
III. PROJECT JUSTIFICATION
Time demands are indicative of stress faced by individuals and the consequences are often
felt by families (Sanik & Mauldin, 1986). Based on the information gathered during the
interview-survey process, it was concluded that absent-parent families experienced difficulty
with delegating roles, responsibilities and chores amongst family members due to the lack of
a parental figure. Creating a project that would help them with their schedules would
actually help the relationships and the chemistry between each family member to grow
rapidly.
Work-family research emphasizes the importance of mechanisms that link work and family
(Edwards & Rothbard, 2000). The children of absent-parent families in Sitio Makabuhay
shoulder the weight of an extremely important parental role: the absent parent. This causes
the children to go through forced maturity, withdrawal from education and personal
aspirations, and compensation for the absent parent role.
Children of absent-parent families are forced to mature more rapidly than those of traditional
parent families because they require having to get a job to support their family financially
(Anderson, 2014). Most older siblings are left to sacrifice their education and personal
aspirations and opportunities for development in order to spend more time at home taking
care of their younger siblings. Every member of the family has their own roles and
responsibilities, which implies that if there is an absent parent, the children are left with a
surplus of responsibilities and chores which calls for them to leave school and start working, all
whilst attempting to fulfill the role of the missing parental figure.
The two sustainable goals that the researchers’ hope to solve with their project, Mahalaga,
would be SDG #1, “No poverty” and SDG #8, “Decent work and Economic growth”. This
project, a seminar and workshop for the absent parent families in Sitio Makabuhay, will be
able to solve no poverty, a sustainable development goal created by the United Nations
because the seminar will teach the children and parents proper load management and
balancing household chores. This will help them improve and then eventually grow bringing
them one step closer to prosperity and success. Mahalaga could also be a solution to decent
work and economic growth because family dynamics is the foundation of every persons
habits and routine. If the children and parents are taught to properly manage their time, this
will influence the following generations giving an improvement to the economy and realising
the importance of time management and work.
IV. PROJECT AIMS
The project aims to provide insight on the core problem being the negative effects of absent
parenthood on the children of Sitio Makabuhay. The project goal aims to strengthen the
bond of the absent parent families in the community.
Objective 1: To help develop better relationships between the family members in Sitio
Makabuhay
This objective is important in that it gives importance to family bonding. Members of Sitio
Makabuhay families experience a hindrance in their relationships due to numerous factors
that arise due to their family and living situations such as low income, improper distribution of
roles and responsibilities, and neglect. Because of the absent parent in the family, either the
parent or the eldest child are tasked with the biggest responsibilities which cater to the
family’s financial needs. The need for a job leaves members to spend less time with one
another. A life of poverty results into a life lived with constant stress, fear, and responsibility,
which is unhealthy for the people experiencing it. The “Scrapbook Making” activity will help
remind families of their shared love. Conducted surveys and interviews from the visits to Sitio
Makabuhay found that either the families were closer due to their circumstances, or not as
close as they would like due to the lack of time to spend with one another due to their jobs.
The pictures will provide sentimental value and inspiration and will allow the families to have
something to remember one another by.
Objective 2: To encourage organization in family chores and responsibilities in the household
in Sitio Makabuhay
The objective of organization in Sitio Makabuhay households is imperative because it
encourages responsibility and allows for the easier distribution of chores within the family. A
“Chore Chart Making” activity will help the family members learn better time management
and communication. It will remind them of their day-to-day responsibilities, activities, and
schedules which will also cater to a variable present in the first objective: making time for one
another. Responsibilities that touch on subjects of education, career, and finance will be
highlighted in the activity. This activity will result in a more effective, organized, and
goal-driven household.
Objective 3: To educate the children of Sitio Makabuhay on increasing their academic and
personal desires and aspirations in reaching realistic goals
Children of Sitio Makabuhay rarely accomplish their academic goals due to their low income.
At an early age, they are forced to leave school and find jobs in order to support their families
financially. The lack of education breeds a lack of desire that hinders them from realizing their
goals, passions, and aspirations in life. They are left to live within their boundaries as set by
their limited education. This disallows them to achieve greater knowledge and foster new
relationships and experiences. The activity will call for educational games that will help instill
inspiration for the kids in teaching them the importance of education and relationships whilst
exploring their creativity and passions.
IV. PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION
This project aims to help families with bonding, distribution of chores, and education. A child
psychologist will be contacted beforehand to ensure that the activities prepared are suitable
for the children regarding their age and activity itself. Along with the child psychologist, the
Family Life and Wellness Institute of De La Salle Zobel and the Center of Family Ministries of
Ateneo de Manila University will be consulted in order to help this project. Prepared are three
activities for these categories. The first activity is scrapbook making which falls under family
bonding. In this activity, the project head will take two pictures of each family and together,
they will be creating the back page of the chore chart. The next activity is chore chart
making which falls under distribution of chores. Together the parents and children will specify
which chores the children do and create a chart for their tasks. The next and final activity will
be educational games. The children will play games together to not only have fun but also
learn with each other. The child psychologist, mentioned before, will be invited to this event
to oversee the project and to discuss with the parents during the games.
a. TARGET GROUP
The project was originally made to focus on the target group of absent families residing in
Sitio makabuhay. After creating the activities for the workshop it was concluded by the group
that even normal families can be considered as a target audience for Mahal(aga).

Using the Cost-Benefit Analysis, the researchers decided to spend the least amount of
money possible while still having the same amount of benefits from these products
such as: effectiveness, quality, and physical look of products. To achieve this, our
resources will come from a local and easily accessible online store called Shopee. All
materials will be ordered off of Shopee to keep our project on a low budget. To
ensure the quality of these different products, the reviews on the different products
ordered such as comments and stars will be checked on the Shopee website.

VII. MONITORING AND EVALUATION
Indicators for project success:
Success of the project can be seen through 3 main concepts. The first would be in the level of
participation/interaction of the audience. This is when the audience, members, and
speaker/s are engaged in the topic of conversation, participative, and interactive amongst
one another in each activity. The second would be the efficient fulfilment of activities. This is
achieved through the activities are compliant with their schedules, team members have a
firm grasp on flow of activity & team members remain in contact at all times and provide
progress updates. The third and final would be survey on project success. This is observed
through the audience who will be asked to answer a detailed survey at the end of the
discussion and the evaluation of team members to one another.
Progress will be evaluated every checkpoint. Checkpoints will be held on the start of, during,
and end of every activity. Progress will be detailed and outlined in the members’ google
drive by uploading necessary updates visible to every member. The project evaluation will be
overseen by the workshop master yet all team members will input their evaluations.
