THE USED OF ENGLISH ON THREE SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS TO
IMPROVE VOCABULARY
Introduction
Method of learning one language in cuurent trend has become easier. People do not
have to spend much times or money. Social media has become one important tool to
improve one’s language ability such as vocabulary. According to Fewkes & McCabe,
Fischer, Jarvis & Achilleos, “The English language is acknowledged as the lingua
franca of languages, and within the last decade, much attention has been paid to the
use of social media platforms in language learning, whether through computers or
mobile devices such as mobile phones or tablets” (92-98). However, as the concept
of social media has only been around for the last few decades, it can be viewed from
a historical perspective to be a relatively new form of communication and learning
process. The social media that most people use nowadays is google, instagram, and
youtube. Those three platforms are known as the most usefull apps compared to
others platforms.
Google comes as the first platform used by a lot of people. People will directly look
for articles, stories, vocabularies using google. There are a lot of options that they get
on google when searching for something. Google also helps its users in describing
the confused words or some unfamiliar words people have not heard before.
Instagram comes as the second app used by most people to increasing ones’
vocabularies. This app has been used by many people to chat with friends from many
countries that will be helpful in enriching vocabularies. People can also see some
posts shared by some english-teaching users. The most are mostly the new english
words that can relate study such as toefl, ielts and others.
The last one is youtube. Youtube has known as the app that most people use to watch
videos. However, it can helps the users in enchricing their vocabularies through the
videos they have watched. They can also use youtube to search for some facsinating
videos they want to watch to improve their English more specifically about
vocabularies.
To conclude, using the three apps above in increasing ones’s vocabularies are the
most usefull ways. The differences between these three platforms may be interesting
for some people to pick which one they can stick to it in increasing the vocabularies.
