AZIMUTH
 Horizontal angles observed clockwise from any
reference meridian
 In plane surveying, azimuths are generally
observed from north

 Astronomers and the military have used south as

the reference direction

 National Geodetic Survey (NGS) also used south

as its reference for azimuths for NAD27 (North
American Datum 1927), but north has been
adopted for NAD83

MINE SURVEYING
Vein, in geology, ore body that is disseminated
within definite boundaries in unwanted rock or
minerals.

Veins occur when cracks form within an existing

rock. Within these fractures, fluid in or around the
existing rock allows for the release of minerals.
As the rock temperature cools these fluids
precipitate and mineralize, forming veins.

STRIKE is the direction of the line formed by the

intersection of a rock surface(vein) with a horizontal

What is drift in underground mining?

All horizontal or subhorizontal

development openings made in a mine
have the generic name of drift. These
DRIFT are simply tunnels made in the rock,
with a size and shape depending on
their use—for example, haulage,
ventilation, or exploration.
