Short-range air defense missile system

The Avenger air defense system is armed with 8 Stinger missiles

Country of origin United States

Entered service 1990
The Avenger is a mobile short-range air

defense missile system. It provides mobile
Dimensions and weight protection for ground units against low-flying
Weight 4.3 t aircraft, helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles
Length 4.95 m and cruise missiles. It was developed by Boeing
Width 2.49 m Aerospace as a private venture. Development
Height 2.64 m commenced in the early 1980s. It was
Missile successfully trialed by the US Army in 1984. First
Missile length 1.52 m production systems entered service with the US
Missile diameter 0.07 m Army in 1990 and replaced the M163 Vulcan and
Missile weight 10.1 kg M167 anti-aircraft guns. It was also in adopted by

the US Marine Corps. Export operators are

the M998, M1026 or M1097 weapon carrier. All

of these vehicles are members of the HMMWV

tactical vehicle family. The Avenger is equipped
Maneuverability

with a PMS platform (Pedestal Mounted Stinger),
Side slope 30%
which has two quadruple launchers with eight
Vertical step 0.5 m FIM-92 Stinger short-range surface-to-air
Trench 0.5 m missiles. Also this system is compatible with all
Fording 0.75 - 1.5 m models of the Stinger missile. The Avenger air
defense system can operate in day/night and all
weather conditions.
The FIM-92 Stinger is a two-stage solid fuel self-homing missile with infra-red guidance. It is a
fire-and-forget type weapon. It has a maximum speed of Mach 2.2 and is fitted with HE-FRAG
warhead. Range of fire and altitude depends on the missile model. Maximum range of fire is from
4 to 8 km and maximum altitude is 3.5 to 3.8 km.
The Avenger can launch its missiles stationary or on the move, with a maximum speed of 35
km/h. This system has a high degree of hip probability with a single missile. During trials the
Avenger managed to hit 171 targets out of 178. A full set of 8 reload missiles is carried inside the
vehicle. Missiles are reloaded manually within 3 minutes.
This combat vehicle is also fitted with a 12.7 mm machine gun which is used against air and
ground targets. A total of 200 rounds of ammunition are carried.
The Avenger has a highly automated fire control system. Vehicle is equipped with an optical
tracker and forward-looking infra-red system. These are used to acquire targets. A friend-or-foe
identification system is also fitted. Alternatively targeting data is provided by forward area air
defense radar.

This air defense system has a crew of two, including driver and operator.
Vehicle is powered by a Detroit Diesel 6.2-liter diesel engine, developing 135 hp. Engine is
coupled with an automatic transmission. The Avenger can be used over all types of roads. All
wheel drive, high power-to-weight ratio combining with high ground clearance give it good cross-
country mobility. A wide track was designed to drive in tracks left by the main battle tanks. Vehicle
is fitted with a central tyre inflation system. Avenger can be airlifted by C-130 Hercules military
transport aircraft, or carried underslung by UH-60, CH-46, CH-47 and CH-53 helicopters.
If necessary the PMS platform can be removed from the vehicle and launch its missiles up to 50
m away from the combat vehicle. Also the PMS platform was proposed to be fitted on other
chassis, such as the Bv206, M548 and M113. It can be also used as a stand alone stationary
module.
Some variants of the Avenger were proposed, fitted with Starstreak, Mistral, RBS 70 or Javelin
missiles.
It is worth noting, that the US Army used another mobile air defense system, armed with Stinger
missiles. The M6 Linebacker used chassis of the M2 Bradley infantry fighting vehicle and
equipped with a quadruple launcher. This air defense system was adopted in 1997. This vehicle
was retired in 2006 due to the lack of airborne threat.
