What I Need to Know
vi
Texts are written for a variety of purposes, using different forms and standards of
composition. These forms of writing are known as text types. Beyond the challenges of
grammar, punctuation, and spelling, you need to understand the conventions and structures
of the many different text types or genres. Each time you put pen to paper, you set off with
the intention of completing a specific task. That is, you begin with a purpose you wish to
accomplish with your writing.

In this module, we will look at some of the main text types (Narrative in Literature,
Expository, Explanatory, Factual and Personal Recount, Persuasive) on Developing
Paragraphs. We will examine the purpose of each of these specific text types through
naming and explaining each structure to navigate your way through writing that serves a
broad range of purposes. It will also help you in understanding the various underlying text
structures to provide you with an effective means of organizing your own work, providing
opportunities to explore how these text types operate. This will go a long way to develop
you into adaptive and organized readers and writers in the future.

The Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC) covered in this module is

developing paragraphs that illustrate each text type (Narrative in Literature, Expository,
Explanatory, Factual and Personal Recount, and Persuasive).

Objectives:
At the end of the module, you should be able to:

1. Name and explain the structure of different text types.

2. Develop paragraphs that illustrate each text type (narrative in literature, expository,
explanatory, factual and personal recount, persuasive).

Before starting your

journey in this module, let
us check what you already
know about the lesson to
take. What are you waiting
for? Prepare your answer
sheet and do What I Know
Pre-test.

4
What Is It
What are Text Types?
Text types are any pieces of writing that you read or create. This can be anything from
novels, newspaper reports and textbooks to recipes, movie reviews, and game instructions. A
text type scaffold is a simple framework that helps you to construct and create a piece of
writing. There are five types of text that you will learn in this module.

Types of Texts

1. Narrative text is a report of related events presented to listeners or readers in words which
are arranged in a logical sequence. A story is taken as a synonym of narrative. A narrative, or
story, is told by a narrator who may be a direct part of that experience, and he or she often
shares the experience as a first-person narrator. Sometimes, he or she may only observe the
events as a third-person narrator and gives his or her summation.

Example:

The Necklace and the Comb tells the story of Inday who adored her necklace and
comb. She was given these as family heirloom during her sixteenth birthday. She would
keep with her the necklace and comb even while working, so to avoid spoiling them; she put
those on the cloud. Her necklace and comb went up later with the sky. Time came, the comb
became the quarter moon, and then, the necklace turned into the stars.

2. Expository text is intended to give information by giving directions, showing how

something happens, or explaining a subject matter. In expository writing, linking words like first,
second, then, and finally are used to help readers follow the ideas. It is generally built around
three parts. The topic sentence allows the reader to understand what you are writing about.
The supporting sentences explain the topic and follow one another in a logical sequence.
The concluding sentence closes your subject with an emphasis on the final product.

5
It is important to remember that all paragraphs should contain a topic sentence. It may
be even more important in the expository paragraph because this is where the main idea of
the paragraph is expressed. This topic sentence lets the reader know what the rest of the
paragraph will discuss.
Example:

Chrissy is my best friend for many reasons. First, she is always helpful. After
I had a baby, I was really tired, so she came over to hold Cameron while I took a
nap. Also, she is a good listener. Whenever I have a problem, she hears my
worries and helps me decide what to do. Finally, she is funny! Chrissy always tells
the most hilarious jokes that make me laugh. All in all, I couldn’t ask for a better
friend than Chrissy.

ry_Paragrahphs.html

3. Explanatory text is a type of non-fiction text that explains a process (for example, how
something works or why something happens). This requires supportive materials like facts,
findings, data, and quotes.

Example:

What is COVID-19?  COVID-19 is a disease caused by a new strain of

coronavirus. ‘CO’ stands for corona, ‘VI’ for virus, and ‘D’ for disease. Formerly, this
disease was referred to as ‘2019 novel coronavirus’ or ‘2019-nCoV.’ The COVID-19
virus is a new virus linked to the same family of viruses as Severe Acute Respiratory
Syndrome (SARS), and some types of common cold.
[Link]
[Link]?sfvrsn=baf81d52_4

4. Factual and Personal Recount texts are written or spoken narrations that retell past
events in the order in which they happened. There are two main kinds of recount.

a) Factual recounts: These are used to record details and facts of a particular event
which the speaker or writer has not necessarily been involved in.
Examples:

Thunderstorms happen when warm, moist air quickly moves upwards. This
causes clouds to form and it creates gusty winds. During a thunderstorm, there is
usually very heavy rain. Sometimes, hail will fall. These weather events can last
for just a few minutes, or they may last for much longer.

[Link]

6
Stations of the Cross, also called Way of the Cross, is a series of 14
pictures or carvings portraying events in the Passion of Christ, from his
condemnation by Pontius Pilate to his entombment. The images are usually
mounted on the inside walls of a church or chapel, but may also be erected in
such places as cemeteries, corridors of hospitals, and religious houses, or on
mountainsides.
[Link]

b) Personal recounts: These describe events that the speaker/writer was or is personally
involved in. In written form, this is usually autobiographical.

Example:

Last week, our class planted some bean seeds in ice-cream cups. We
watered the seeds. After that, we placed the cups on the windowsill in the sun.
About five days later, we observed that some of the seeds were beginning to
germinate. A few days later, the plants had started to sprout leaves. By the end of
the week, they were about seven centimeters tall.

[Link]

All recounts need to have a problem which is resolved, so each recount type should
have a beginning (exposition), a middle (the problem of the story), and resolution (solution to
the problem posed).

Persuasive text is organized to include a statement of position, arguments, and a

reinforcement of position statement. The statement of position gives an overview of the
argument, and reveals the position to be argued. After you have put forth your arguments, you
then, need to sum up. In this section, you will strongly repeat what you believe in with a
summary of your argument points.
Emotive is a descriptive word that appeals to the emotions. For example - wonderful, horrible,
cruel, amazing, frightening, and perfect.
Repetition of words or phrases and concepts is needed to push your point of view
Connectives will help sequence your argument. For example – Firstly, Secondly, etc.

7
Example:

Why Students Should Eat Breakfast Everyday

A lot of people, especially young people, go through the day without having
breakfast. Many people believe that it is not necessary, or they say that they do not
have time for that, and begin their day with no meal. I believe that everyone should
eat breakfast before going to their activities. The purpose of this statement is to show
the importance of breakfast, especially for students.

What’s More
Activity 2: Guess Me Right!

Directions: Identify the following text types. Write Narrative, Expository, Explanatory,
Factual, and Personal Recount or Persuasive on your answer sheets.

Why You Should Communicate Effectively

The purpose of this essay is to discuss four important skills that will help you
communicate effectively. Such skills are not to be afraid of speaking, always defend
what you want to say, express exactly what you mean to say, and listen while you are
not speaking.

Fishing
Fishing is an ancient practice that has been an essential part of human life for
over 40,000 years. In many parts of the world, fish was the primary food source, so

The Monkey and the Turtle

This is a folktale written by Philippine national hero Jose Rizal. The story
focuses on the monkey and turtle who started as friends. They both saw a floating
banana plant on the water. They thought of splitting it, so they could plant it. The
monkey chose the upper part of the plant for he thought it was better. Meanwhile, the
turtle got the bottom part with the roots, so he grew an abundant plant. Since the turtle
could not climb the tree to get the fruits, he asked the monkey to get it for him. Instead,
the monkey betrayed the turtle and ate every fruit. The turtle planned a revenge against
him which ended up to the monkey’s death. The friends of the monkey also planned a
revenge, but they did not win over the turtle

Drive-in-net Fishing

The municipal drive-in-net is a minor fishing gear among small-scale fishermen. It is

very seldom used nowadays, and its contribution is less than 1% to the total municipal and
commercial fishing production. Small-scale drive-in-nets differ in design, methods of
operation, and materials used. They are commonly operated in Bogo, Cebu; Bolinao,
Pangasinan; and Guimbal, Iloilo.

The commercial drive-in-net in the 1980s, the “muro-ami”, had been banned together
with the smaller type “Kayakas”. The use of bubbles generated by compressors through
plastic hoses, to scare coral reef fishes without affecting the coral ecosystem, has been
introduced. It is presently operated by three fishing companies. The gear is called “Paaling”
which means to wait. It is used for catching the fusiliers and other coral reef fishes. Major
fishing grounds are the western and eastern waters of Palawan.

Why Do we Yawn?

Yawning is contagious, it is said. However, how much do we know about it? It is

obviously a curiosity among millions of people, as one of the most searched-for queries on
Google is “Why do we yawn?” There are multiple theories about why we yawn: to bring
more oxygen into the blood and move more carbon dioxide out of the blood when our
breathing slows (from being tired or bored), to stretch the lungs and lung tissue (to flex our
muscles and joints, raise our heart rate, and be more awake), to redistribute surfactant to
lubricate the lungs and to make sure they do not collapse, to react to someone else yawning
as part of a contagious act, and to cool the brain.

My Best Friend
My name is Jose. Three years ago, when I was in junior high school, I met two
people that later became my best friends. The first one was Pedro. He was an athlete in our
school. He was tall and muscular. The other one was Juan. He was a very diligent student.
He liked to read the encyclopedia and he ranked first in my class. I liked them both because
they were very friendly to other people. Even though Eric and Ricky were very famous in our
school, they were not arrogant. They made friends with anybody including me.
