Pile Load Test Methodology Guide

The document describes the methodology for conducting a pile load test to determine the load capacity of piles. The pile will be loaded incrementally up to 600 metric tons and settlements will be measured to determine the safe load capacity based on settlement thresholds. The load will be applied and removed incrementally and settlements measured at each step to evaluate the pile's performance.

METHODOLOGY FOR PILE LOAD TEST

Vertical load capacity of pile shall be not less than 240MT. As such the pile will be tested
for a load up to (240 x 2.5) = 600 MT (safe load) (Ref. IS: 2911, Part-1, sec-2, clause
5.8.3)

Top of pile at the cut off level will be cut smooth and plastered in true level.

Kent ledge platform & other loading arrangement etc. Will be placed as per approved
design & drawing which will be approved by I.E. The C.G. of Kent ledge will be kept
along the axis of pile & the load applied by the jack will also be coaxial with the pile (IS:
2911, Part-4, clause 6.1.3-a)

Dial gauges & pressure jack meters will be duly calibrated & approved well in advance.

A bearing plate with a hole at the center will be placed on the head of the pile for the
central jack to rest.

Min. 2 nos dial gauges of 0.01 mm least count, shall be fixed at the opposite sides of the
pile, which will be held by datum bars resting on immovable supports at a distance of
minimum-1500mm from the edge of pile (IS: 2911, part-4, clause 6.1.4).

The test will be carried out by applying a series of vertical drawn ward incremental load
about 20% of safe load of pile in each increment (120MT each).

Each increment of load shall be applied as smooth as possible.

The safe load capacity of the pile will be least of the following:

a) 2/3rd of the final load at which total settlement becomes 12mm

b) 50% of the final load at which total settlement equals 10% of the pile dia i.e.
120mm.

Application of each increment of load (120MT) will be maintained till rate of settlement
of the pile top is either.

a) mm in first 30 minutes, or

b) mm in first 60 minutes, or

c) till 120 minutes, whichever occurs first.

The final load (600MT) will be maintained for 24 hrs. & the settlement will be recorded
at 6 hrs. Interval during this period.

If the limit of permissible settlement (12mm) is not exceeded, testing of pile will not be
continued further.

Unloading shall be carried out in the same steps as loading. A minimum period of 30
minutes shall be allowed to elapse between two successive stages of load decrement. The
final rebound shall be recorded 6 hours after the entire test load has been removed.

4 nos of jacks will be placed in a proper pattern putting one at the center & three on the
sides of the pile-circle. All jacks will be operated simultaneously to avoid unbalanced
situation.

Adequate arrangement of safety will be made both at the time of loading & testing.
