Subject: Christian Living 8 – The Beginning of Jesus Ministry Quarter: Third Grading
Learning Module #1: Lesson #.1
Topic: Jesus Calls the First Disciples Number of Days: 3

I. INTRODUCTION:

Simon and his brother Andrew were the first disciples Jesus chose. Next, Jesus called James and
John, then Philip, Nathaniel (also called Bartholomew), Matthew, Thomas, and James, son of Alphaeus,
and Simon the Zealot, and Judas, son of James and Judas Iscariot.
According to the Gospel of John, Andrew and one of the other apostles had first been disciples
of John the Baptist. The disciples were more interested in telling Jesus’ story than in telling their own,
but we do know a few things about some of them.
James and John were the sons of Zebedee. Andrew and Philip have Greek names and spoke
Greek to travellers who came from Greece to hear Jesus preach. They may have had Greek relatives or
Greek or Roman education. Matthew had been a tax collector, a disrespected way of earning a living in
those days. Tax collectors were not allowed to testify in court because everyone believed they were
totally dishonest. Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot may have been political activist, belonging to
some of the many groups that wanted to overthrow the Roman government. We only know Thomas’
nickname: both Thomas in Armaic and Didymus in Greek mean twin. What we know for all the
disciples is that they all left their livelihood and commitments to follow Jesus as He travelled around
the country, preaching, teaching, and healing.
When Jesus calls, “Follow Me and I will make you fishers of men,” no privilege so great as to be
called by name to follow Jesus. Jesus is generous to all who follow Him without reserve.

At the end of the lesson you should be able to:

1. Understand Jesus’ purpose in gathering more disciples.
2. Strive to change for God’s love.
3. Be inspired on how Jesus’ love grows.

II. CONCEPT SUMMARY:

It was Jesus who approached Peter and his future fellow travellers; this overturned the custom
of the time, since the rabbis of the period did not normally go to find their followers. This styles shows
the “totally new” announcement of the Kingdom of God that Christ is about to proclaim. Christ does
not oppress but liberates His disciples, soliciting a complete response to His invitation to follow Him.
Jesus gave the twelve men the power to heal. He told them to preach the Kingdom of God. These
twelve He called apostles which means, “those who are sent out.” And Jesus sends out the Twelve to
preach to others.
In the choice of the twelve apostles we see a characteristics feature of God’s work: Jesus chose
very ordinary people. They were non-professionals, had no wealth or position. They were chosen from
the common people who did ordinary things, had no special education, and no social advantages. Jesus
wanted ordinary people, who could take an assignment and do it extraordinarily well. He chose these
men, not for what they were, but for what they would be capable of becoming under His direction and
power. When the Lord calls us to serve, we must not think we have nothing to offer. The Lord takes
what ordinary people, like us, can offer and uses it for the spread of His Kingdom.

Jesus had many followers, but the Bible tells us that He had twelve who were specifically called to be
His closest friends. These twelve men spent a great deal of time with Jesus- they travelled with Him, ate
with Him, and left their homes and families to be with Him.

The Mission of the Twelve

He summoned the Twelve and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure
diseases, and He sent them to proclaim the Kingdom of God and to heal (the sick). He said to them,
“Take nothing for the journey, neither walking stick nor sack, nor food, nor money, nor let no one take
a second tunic. Whatever house you enter stay there and leave from there. And as for those who do
not welcome you, when you leave that town, shake the dust from your feet in testimony against them.
Then they set out and went from village to village proclaiming the good news and curing diseases
everywhere.
(Luke 9:1-6)

B. Church Teachings

The Man Named Peter

The Lord Jesus, after praying to the Father, calling to Himself those whom He desired, appointed
the twelve to be with Him, and whom He would send to preach the Kingdom of God; and these apostles
He formed after the manner of a college or a stable group, over which he placed Peter chosen from
among them. He sent them first to the children of Israel and then to all nations, so that as sharers in His
power they might make all peoples His disciples, and sanctify and govern them, and thus spread His Church,
and by ministering to it under the guidance of the Lord, direct it all days even to consummation of the world.
And in this mission they were fully confirmed on the day of Pentecost in accordance with the Lord’s promise:
“You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you shall be witnesses for me in
Jerusalem, and in all Judea and in Samaria, and even to the very end of the earth”. And the apostles, by
preaching the Gospel everywhere, and it being accepted by their hearers under the influence of the Holy
Spirit, gather together the Universal Church, which the Lord established on the apostles and built upon
blessed Peter, their chief, Christ Jesus Himself being the supreme cornerstone.

Broadening Horizons

The lord calls us, even in our weakness and sin, to love Him above else all. St. Augustine in his confession
wrote: “Late I have loved You, O Beauty so ancient and so new. Late I have loved You!... you shone Your Self
upon me to drive away my blindness. You breathed Your fragrance upon me… and in astonishment I drew my
breath … now I pant for You! I tasted You, and now I hunger and thirst for You. You touched me! - and I burn
to live within Your peace” (Confessions 10.27). Nothing but our sinful pride and wilfulness can keep us from
the love of God. It is a free gift unmerited and beyond payment. We can never outmatch God in love.

He loved us first and our love for Him is a response to His exceeding graciousness and mercy. Jesus calls all
Christians to help build a better world. He wants the world to be full of God’s goodness; Jesus wants us to love
one another. In John 13:34, Jesus says: “A new command I give you: Love one another as I have loved you, so
you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

3.2. Broadening of Concepts and Integration

 Faith/Prophetic Witness to Gospel Values - “Follow Me and I will make fishers of men,”
 Leadership/Corruption – How do leaders of today can manifest true authentic leadership?

“Rejoice and encourage them all to remain faithful to the Lord…” Acts 11:23
