CHAPTER 7: RIZAL'S SECOND HOMECOMING

A. RIZAL'S REASON FOR COMING BACK TO THE PHILIPPINES

1) To have discussions with Governor General Eulogio Despujol regarding his Borneo
colonization project.
2) To establish the La Liga Filipina in Manila.
3) To prove that Eduardo de Lete was wrong in attacking him in Madrid (that he's being
comfortable and safe in Hong Kong and had abandoned the country’s cause, which was
printed in La Solidaridad, on which it portrayed Rizal as cowardly, egoistic, opportunistic—
a patriot in words only).
B. ARRIVAL IN MANILA WITH HIS SISTER LUCIA
 Rizal successfully came back to the Philippines with his sister Lucia on the 26th of
June 1892.
 They went to Malacañang Palace to seek an audience with the Spanish Governor
General Eulogio Despujol but were told to come back.
 Upon his return to Manila by train, he was closely monitored by government spies.
C. FOUNDLING OF THE LA LIGA FILIPINA
 On July 3, 1892, Rizal met with patriots at Doroteo Ongjunco's home to discuss the
objectives of the Liga Filipina, a civic league for Filipinos that he desired to establish,
and its role in the socio-economic life of the people.
 The governing body of the league was the Supreme Council, which had jurisdiction over
the whole country.
 The duties of the Liga members are as follows:
Obey the orders of the Supreme Council.
Help in recruiting new members.
Keep in strictest secrecy the decisions of the Liga authorities.
Have a symbolic name that he cannot change until he becomes president of his
council.
Report to the fiscal anything that he may hear that affects the Liga.
Behave well as befits a good Filipino.
Help fellow members in all ways.
D. RIZAL'S ARREST THAT LED TO BEING JAILED IN FORT SANTIAGO AND EXILED IN
DAPITAN
 On July 6, 1892, Rizal went to Malacañang to resume his series of interviews with
Governor General Eulogio Despujol. The governor showed some printed leaflets
entitled "Pobres Frailes" or "Poor Friars."
 Rizal was placed under arrest and escorted to Fort Santiago by Ramon Despujol, the
nephew and aide of Governor General Eulogio Despujol, where he was kept
incommunicado.
 Gaceta de Manila published the story of Rizal's arrest, which produced indigent
commotion among the Filipino people, particularly the members of the newly
organized La Liga Filipina.
 On July 15, 1892, Rizal was brought under heavy guard to the steamer Cebu, which
was sailing for Dapitan.

❖ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION!
 BORNEO COLONIZATION PROJECT: Rizal's plan to relocate landless Filipinos to
British-owned Island Sabah and name it New Calamba, which was approved by British
authorities but declined by Gov. Despujol due to labor shortages and patriotic concerns.
 UNUS INSTAR OMNIUM OR “ONE LIKE ALL”: Motto of the La Liga Filipina.
 POBRES FRAILES OR “POOR FRIARS”: Incriminatory leaflets that were allegedly
found in Lucia's pillowcases, which were under the authorship of Father Jacinto
and printed by the Imprenta de los Amigos del Pais, Manila.
