EXCERPT (25 MARKS)
Mossi: Never say die, I always tell you. This world belongs to fighters!
Bembe: (Sinking heavily on the seat, placing his scepter and beret on the table)
I prefer to die than be an inmate or a homeless person.
Mossi: Tough choices, are they not? (Pauses) But don’t worry, as I always say,
it is the nature of war.
Bembe: Lord have mercy on me. I have no more doubt these are my last days.
My stomach has been running since The Samaritan came to town. And
you know I am diabetic. I can’t last a week in prison.
Mossi: There is still room for manoeuvre.

Bembe: I went to see the teacher last Friday after you told me she had refused
to comply. I tried talking to her, but she turned out to be very
stubborn, just as you said. I arrested her. I charged her with
disobeying authorities and stealing the school generator. You know
what? Word of her arrest apparently spread like bush fire. By the time
she was arraigned in court this morning, thousands of protesters –
touts, hawkers, students, women and men of all walks of life. – were all
gathered at the court’s precincts. I suspect people were mobilized
through The Samaritan App! Justice Jaden heard the case. He
dismissed it and set her free. Would you believe the fools I sent were
unable to steal the generator? I have been badly embarrassed!
Mossi: I am fully in the picture. (Pauses, nodding) I think from now on that
teacher will be a force to reckon with in this Municipality. I have never
seen the kind of solidarity that the people displayed today!
Bembe: That is true. My bosses have now summoned me at the headquarters
in the Capital on account of her arrest. My situation is out of hand;
and I have no more ideas left, except perhaps flee into the mountain.
Maybe I will dig a hole and live there. And you know what? I stepped
on one of my shoelaces this morning, got entangled and fell very badly.
My knees, elbows and head are aching. I know now I am ruined.
Mossi: They say when bad luck chooses you as a companion, even a ripe
banana can knock off your teeth. (After some silence and giving
Inspector Bembe a thumbs up) Thank you for making it impossible for
Ramdaye and his team to meet and discuss the vote of no confidence.
It was a job well done!
