The document discusses the debate on whether management is an art or a science. It presents arguments for both perspectives, highlighting that management requires practical knowledge, personal skill, creativity, and goal orientation, which align with the characteristics of art. ACHATOH BENADETTE

PRINCIPLE OF MANAGEMENT
25 OCTOBER 2024
Mr OTANG DESMOND

ASSIGNMENT
1. Is management and art or science discuss
SOLUSION
A. Many scholars had debate on the fact that management
is an art while others said it’s a science. Below are the
point to prove that management is an art
 Practical knowledge: Every artist requires practical
application as learning theories are not enough for them to
be efficient. As a good manager you must apply
management principles in real life situation to be efficient
in your job.
 Personal skill: Every artist uses his personal style and
approach in performing his art, this is obvious in
management as managers with the same training may
adopt different management style to achieve objectives.
 Creativity: Artist use their intelligence and imaginations to
bring forth a unique idea never seen before. Similarly,
managers are required to be creative and constantly
improve on their management styles to achieved
objectives.
 Perfection through practice: constant practice makes every
artist perfect, similarly managers get better with
experiences as they learn from their previous mistake
through constant practice to make better decision in the
future.
 Goal oriented: Goal oriented artist are results artist that is
they set target for themselves band endeavor to achieve
them. This is obvious as managers are evaluated based on
the targets and objective they set and their ability to
achieved them.
B. Not will standing the point above some scholars stood
firmly to say management a science and use the following
point bellow to backup their clams
 General accepted principles: Principles and laws is science
are generally accepted and considered to be true all over
the world. Similarly, principles in management are
universally accepted for example Fayol 14 principles of
management.
 Experimentation and observation: Scientific law and
principles are abstained from research based on logic.
Management principles are also obtained from scientific
experiment for example the Hawthorne experiment or
effect
 Cause effect relationship: Scientific principles establish a
cause effect relationship between variables. For example,
motivation and productivity. Such as motivated employees
are more productive.
 Validity and productivity: Once a science principle is
accepted, it can be tested several times to give the same
result. Again, this similar to management principles which
can withstand the test of time under the same conditions
