What is Verb?
Verb का अथर्म है कोई भी ' क्रिया ' अथार्मत 'काम' जै से :
आना (to come), जाना (to go), उठना (to get up),: मरना
(to dic), होना (to be) पास रखना (to have) आ द।
इस प्रकार वाक्य में जो शब्द कसी क्रिया का होना प्रकट करे वह Verb
कहलाता है ।
Note: अंग्रेजी वाक्य का हन्दी अनु वाद करने पर Verb वाक्य के अन्त
में आता है ।
जैसे - I am bathing. (मैं नहा रहा हू ँ । ) अिन्तम भाग 'नहा रहा हू ँ '
क्रिया है ।

What is Verb?
A Verb denotes an action or being or possession.
For example:
1. The dancer danced well.
Action
2. The dog barks at strangers.
3. Rahul is tall.
Being
4. Rajesh Khanna was a superstar.
5. I have a nice dress.
Possession
6. The man has a strong body.

Kinds of Verbs ( क्रिया के प्रकार ):
There are 3 kinds of verbs:
1. Transitive Verb
2. Intransitive Verb
3. Incomplete Verb (Complements)

Kinds of Verbs ( क्रिया के प्रकार ):
1. Transitive Verb (सकमर्मक क्रिया )
िजस Verbs का काम कतार्म तक ही सी मत न रहकर कसी अन्य
व्यिक्त या व तु को भी प्रभा वत करता है अथार्मत िजनके साथ
object प्रयु क्त हो वे Transitive Verbs कहलाती हैं ।
e.g. Ram killed a snake.
उपरोक्त वाक्य में killed क्रिया का प्रभाव Ram तक ही सी मत
नहीं है बिल्क snake तक पहुं चता है । अतः killed क्रिया
Transitive verb है ।

Kinds of Verbs ( क्रिया के प्रकार ):
Note: Object होते हु ए भी नम्न दशाओं में Verb Transitive
नहीं होती है :
a. य द object cognate हो अथार्मत उस object और वाक्य में
प्रयु क्त verb की उत्प त्त , रूप, अथर्म एक समान हो, दोनों सजातीय
हो तब Verb Transitive नहीं होती है ।
e.g. I have fought a good fight.
I dreamt a strange dream.
He laughed a hearty laugh.
Let me die the death of a brave.

Kinds of Verbs ( क्रिया के प्रकार ):
b. य द Object Adverbial हो अथार्मत adverb (वह शब्द जो
कसी Verb, Adjective या कसी दूसरे Advert की वशेषता
बताता है । ) की तरह कायर्म करे तब वह Verb Transitive नहीं
होता है ।
e.g. He walked a mile.
They went home.
The watch cost fifty rupees.
I was running slowly.

Kinds of Verbs ( क्रिया के प्रकार ):
c. य द Object reflexive हो अथार्मत िजसमें कतार्म और कमर्म एक
ही व्यिक्त हो तब क्रिया Transitive नहीं होती है ।
e.g. The man killed himself.
I wrote myself.

Kinds of Verbs ( क्रिया के प्रकार ):
Transitive Verbs with Two Objects
Some Transitive verbs take two objects after them,
one of which is a person, and the other is a thing.
For example:
1. She gifted me a gold chain.
2. The teacher asked him a question.
3. Rahul gave you a cinema ticket.
4. He teaches us English.

Kinds of Verbs ( क्रिया के प्रकार ):
The above sentences can be written in this way
also:
1. She gifted a gold chain to me.
2. The teacher asked a question to him.
3. Rahul gave a cinema ticket to you.
4. He teaches English to us.

Kinds of Verbs ( क्रिया के प्रकार ):
Here gold chain, question, cinema ticket and
English are Direct objects and me, him, you and us
are Indirect objects.
Note:
● A Direct object is the name of a thing while an
Indirect object is the name of person.
● The Indirect object usually comes before the
Direct object.

Kinds of Verbs ( क्रिया के प्रकार ):
2. Intransitive Verb (अकमर्मक क्रिया )
िजन verb का काम कतार्म पर ही समाप्त हो जाता है अथार्मत
िजसके साथ Object (कमर्म ) प्रयु क्त न हो वे Intransitive
Verb कहलाती हैं या जो क्रियाएं Transitive नहीं होती है वे
Intransitive होती है ।
जैसे : We failed.
She was laughing.
She is sleeping.
They worked hard.

Kinds of Verbs ( क्रिया के प्रकार ):
3. Incomplete Verb, Complements:
Verbs like be (is, are, am, was, were, will be,
shall be, etc.), appear, seem and look are
incomplete verbs and they require
complements to complete their meaning.
For example:
1. The man is gentle.
2. She looks smart.
3. He appears strong.
4. The old man seems weak.

Kinds of Verbs ( क्रिया के प्रकार ):
In the above sentences, the italicised words are
incomplete verbs and they need complements like
'gentle', 'strong', 'smart', 'weak' to complete their
meaning.
