ENGLISH FROM ZERO

Preface
- Introduction to the studying of English as Foreign Language

English From Zero is a project created to benefit

undergraduate students at the Federal University of Amazonas.
The project concerns a free English course, parallel to the
regular classes. For those who have been enrolled at Project
SUPER and want to access original materials, get in
technological fields, participate in interchange programs,
international events or be in contact with people from other
countries, learning English is a way to break barriers oversea
and a great possibility of developing language skills while they
are in college. This is a textbook produced by a group of Letras
(English Language and Literature) students, under the
supervision of language teaching specialists from UFAM, with
the main purpose of involving a great number of pupils from
different fields to learn English in a short period of time, using a
specific book produced in UFAM to UFAM.

- Tatiana Bermond & Edith Corrêa

Book 1 in a series of four textbooks.

Welcome to English From Zero – SUPER!

verbs is in the 3rd person – for he, she or it. In most cases we just add “s” to the verb, in others:

2. If the verb ends in a consonant + Y, we remove the Y and add +IES.

Reading

Unusual to the world, useful to the Amazon

What is your favorite way to travel to another place? By plane? It is certainly faster.
By car? It is slower, but you can enjoy the view. By motorcycle? It can be really fun!
What if I told you that in the middle of the Amazon there are some places that you can
only travel by rabeta?
Rabeta is a type of transportation similar to a canoe but with an engineering motor
coupled. The rabeta is a fundamental part of the daily lives of the ribeirinhos, who are
the people that live in the banks of the river.
Even though the rabeta is an essential part of the ribeirinhos’ life, the engineering
motor can be expensive and not all the ribeirinhos are able to afford one. Even so, the
rabeta is extremely important so communities all over the Amazon can have access to
medications and vaccines. The rabeta can be frightening, but with an experient sailor
it’s a safe transportation. Would you be brave enough to travel by rabeta?

7. Mark T (true) or F (false) about the text.

a) ( ) Rabeta is the only way of transportation available in the Amazon.
b) ( ) Rabeta is an essential part of the ribeirinhos’ life.
c) ( ) All ribeirinhos have enough money to buy a rabeta.
d) ( ) Doctors and hospitals are not allowed to deliver medicines and vaccines to the ribeirinhos.
