Verbs in the present tense follow very simple rules. The only change that is made to these
verbs is in the 3rd person – for he, she or it. In most cases we just add “s” to the verb, in others:
1. If the verb ends in SS, X, CH, SH or the letter O, we add + ES .
2. If the verb ends in a consonant + Y, we remove the Y and add +IES.

Zé Carlos loves playing sports, and his favorite is running. He can run faster than anyone at
UFAM. Every day, he swims and runs at Vila Olímpica to train and become a professional
runner one day. The young athlete also enjoys going to Ponta Negra beach, where he can
swim and play volleyball. Zé often visits Presidente Figueiredo, where he can climb waterfalls
and run through the forest. Zé Carlos loves to dance! He dances all night long at the All Night
Pub. One day, Zé injured his knee while climbing. He told the doctor, “Ouch! I can’t even
walk!” The doctor replied, “You can’t run or climb anymore; it’s too dangerous. You need to
choose: You can run or you can climb”.
After a few months, his coach told him: “You can’t dance
all night and run the next morning. You’ll have to choose:
either you dance, or you run”. It was a tough decision for
Zé, but it paid off. Today, Zé Carlos is one of the greatest
runners in Manaus. He can win every competition, and no
one can defeat him. Zé Carlos trains Every day to show the

What is your favorite way to travel to another place? By plane? It is certainly faster.
By car? It is slower, but you can enjoy the view. By motorcycle? It can be really fun!
What if I told you that in the middle of the Amazon there are some places that you can
only travel by rabeta?
Rabeta is a type of transportation similar to a canoe but with an engineering motor
coupled. The rabeta is a fundamental part of the daily lives of the ribeirinhos, who are
the people that live in the banks of the river.
Even though the rabeta is an essential part of the ribeirinhos’ life, the engineering
motor can be expensive and not all the ribeirinhos are able to afford one. Even so, the
rabeta is extremely important so communities all over the Amazon can have access to
medications and vaccines. The rabeta can be frightening, but with an experient sailor
it’s a safe transportation. Would you be brave enough to travel by rabeta?

I’m going to my friend Pedro’s graduation party this weekend, and I’m excited to celebrate
his achievement. He’s going to receive his diploma at the ceremony, which will be followed
by a reception with food, music, and speeches. I’m looking forward to joining everyone to
congratulate Pedro on this major step in his life!
After graduation, Pedro is going to begin his career as a software engineer at a tech
company he’s thrilled about. He’s going to apply the skills he has learned during his degree
to develop new apps, which he’s really passionate about. In the future, Pedro is considering
advancing his studies with a master’s degree, which would help him specialize even further.
With his hard-earned diploma and strong ambition, I’m sure he’s going to achieve great
success in his field!
