ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Lois Lowry (born Lois Ann
Hammersberg; March 20, 1937) is
an American writer credited with
more than thirty children's books
and an autobiography. She has
won two Newbery Medals,
for Number the Stars in 1989
and The Giver in 1993.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

For her contribution as a children's
writer, she was a finalist in 2000 (and
U.S. nominee again in 2004) for the
biennial, international Hans Christian
Andersen
Award,
the
highest
recognition available to creators of
children's books. In 2007 she received
the Margaret Edwards Award from
the American Library Association for
her contribution in writing for teens.

As

an author, Lowry is known for

writing about difficult subject matters
within her works for children. She has
explored such complex issues as
racism, terminal illness, murder,
andthe Holocaust among other
challenging topics. She has also
explored very controversial issues of
questioning authority such as in The
Giver quartet.

Her

writing on such matters has

brought her both praise and criticism.
In particular, her work The Giver has
been met with a diversity of reactions
from schools in America, some of
which have adopted her book as a
part of the mandatory curriculum,
while others have prohibited the
book's inclusion in classroom studies.

SETTING
The story happened
in the perfect
community of Jonas.

MAJOR CHARACTERS

Jonas The Receiver, the main

subject in the story. A brave and
smart boy with the skill of seeing
beyond, thats why he was
chosen to be the next Giver
The Giver An old man who has
the responsibility of holding the
peoples memories. Hes the one
who gave Jonas memories from
the past to be the next Giver.

MINOR CHARACTERS
Jonas Father - Nurturer
Jonas Mother - Judge
Asher Jonas best friend
Fiona Jonas best friend
Lily Jonas sister

PLOT
A perfect community,
limited
emotions
and
everythings under control
and order- this is where
Jonas lives and where the
bud of his identity continues
to bloom.

PLOT
Selection day is already
near and Jonas had the feeling
of being nervous which was
the similar of what he had a
year ago when an unidentified
aircraft had over flown the
community twice.

PLOT
Jonas has his family
which are consisted of his
mother and father and
lily, her little sister; and
his best friend, Asher.

As his normal days pass, he

has been experiencing what the
Giver perceived as seeing
beyond. He cannot explain why
he sees something indistinctive
on the apple or on the cheeks of
the people during the Selection
day and also on Fionas hair
seemingly changing.

As the selection day

came, most were anxious
regarding
what
their
assignments would be. As
the speaker announced
every name belonged to the
group of 12, Jonas was
terrified waiting for his
name.

To
his
shock,
the
announcer
skipped
his
number. All of the members
of the Group of 12 was
called hence making them
conclude that the ceremony
was through.

When suddenly, the announcer

explained that Jonas wasnt called
for he wasnt assigned. He was
selected as the Receiver.
Everyone was in a state of
shock, remembering that the last
Receiver selected failed her duty
by ordering a release for herself,
being
incapable
for
the
responsibility of a Receiver.

Before his training started he

was given a paper encompassing
the receivers rule stating a
privilege to lie. As Jonass training
goes on, he encounters different
emotions.
First was the snow and sleigh;
then followed by pain, love,
Christmas, death, and other
feelings, which he had never met
on his time.

Every memory the Giver

grants,
Jonass
surroundings
gradually
change. This memory was
given to him and thus will
forever be onto him unless
he passes it onto someone.

One night, Jonass father,

a nurturer told them there
was a twin born that day.
Between them, only one
was required to live and the
other one must be released.

The next day, Jonas

asked the Giver what
happens to people who are
released so he showed it to
him. He was flabbergasted
for they werent really
releasing them but killing.

Jonass father brought one of

the twins, Gabriel, whose healths
quite unwell onto their house.
Jonas was then attached onto
him.
When his father along with the
other nurturers decided that
Gabriel would be the one to
release, Jonas took Gabriel with
him

He and the Giver planned

for Jonass escape so that
they would discharge the
feelings the Giver had passed
onto Jonas, breaking the
principle of their community,
along with Gabriel.

They sneaked off the night and

escaped
the
community,
expecting for them to reach the
Elsewhere a place where the
released
members
of
their
community were expected to go.
When they reach the forests,
Jonas gives Gabrielle some of his
memories like cold, heat, and the
feeling of being exhausted.

By day, they would sleep

and hide themselves from the
search airplanes. And by night,
they would travel. As the
landscapes change, he was
more
certain
that
their
destination lay ahead of them.

On their way to the

Elsewhere, Jonas recalled the
substance was: a snow.
Starving, shaking with the cold,
he managed to warm Gabrielle
and slide through the sled
which he saw on top of the hill
with his final strength.

As
he
slided
downward, he started to
recognize the lights, joy,
warmth, and music. But
before they could reach
their
destination,
he
collapsed.

THEME

Life.

IN THE STORY WE LEARNED THAT

In the story we learned that
people always depend on
someone, they cant handle
the pain themselves without
sharing it with others. We also
learned that people are always
looking for a better life though
they cant really find.

AS WE WERE READING IT, WE WERE REMINDED OF

Toms
midnight
Garden

____ REMINDS US OF___ COZ

Jonas reminds me of the

people who died trying to
present innovations, new
inventions and new ideas
for living like our own Dr.
Jose Rizal who died trying
to give us a taste of
freedom.

I LIKE _ CAUSE _

We
like
Jonas
because he dared to
change the old ways
of their community
even if his life will be
at risk .

I DONT LIKE _ CAUSE _

We dont like their

lifestyle because they
have no choices, all
are limited, and they
cant enjoy what life
can really give.

I THINK_ SHOULD HAVE_ WHEN__

We think the giver

should have done
earlier what Jonas
had done when he
became the receiver.

I LIKE THE PART WHEN __ __ __

I like the part

when Jonas gave
Gabriel
the
memories from the
giver
to
save
Gabriel.

THIS IS SIMILAR TO THE STORY THAT I READ_

COZ_

This is similar to the

story
Toms
Midnight
Garden because Tom also
receives the memories
from Hatty just like Jonas
receives the memories
from the giver.

IF I WOULD CHANGE THE TITLE IT WOULD BE___ COZ

If we would change the

title of the story it
would be Freedom
from Pain is Death
because

TO CHANGE THE ENDING IT WOULD BE LIKE

THIS..

To change the ending it

would be like this that after a
journey that seems endless,
they had finally set foot on
Elsewhere, a community
where the memories passed
onto him was a reality.

TO CHANGE THE ENDING IT WOULD BE

LIKE THIS..

Jonas was really happy but

the picture of his former
community which is now in
confusion and chaos flashed
upon his mind. The state of
happiness
was
instantaneously replaced by
anxiety.

Someone from Elsewhere

finds them and took care of them.
Jonas told them about his
community and asked help from
the people of Elsewhere if they
can accompany him to Jonass
community
and
help
them
overcome the shock of the
emotions.

Without any hesitations, they

agreed. Together with Jonas and
Gab, they went to Jonass
community.
Upon their arrival, they all
sensed something is wrong. The
atmosphere is conquered by
silence and emptiness. They
proceed to the auditorium where
an unexpected scene welcomed
them.

Dead
bodies
were
everywhere.
Sadness,
confusion and shock can still
be depicted in their faces. In
the middle of the stage, The
Giver is sitting there, looking
in nowhere.

Jonas rushed to The Giver and

have things explained. The
Giver was so disappointed and
frustration was all in head
because of his failure in guiding
the people. The Giver said to
Jonas that he was really sorry
and all he wants now is to be
released and to be with
Rosemarie.
