Disney has revealed its plans to launch new Star Wars and Marvel live-action TV series to air on the company's dedicated streaming service.

As part of its plans to create a new streaming platform to rival the likes of Netflix and Amazon Prime, Disney previously confirmed it would be launching original movies and TV shows exclusively for the service.

And today (November 9), the company announced it would be making full use of everything in its arsenal to make the service all the more appealing by confirming new Star Wars and new Marvel content (via Variety).

Yes, alongside today's announcement that Star Wars will be getting another trilogy series and a live-action TV spin-off, Disney also confirmed that it's working on TV spin-offs for its Marvel properties and other big films, including Monsters, Inc. and High School Musical.

Disney chairman and CEO Bob Iger made the announcements during the company's quarterly earnings call and, in order to convince audiences to add a new streamer to their subscriptions list, Iger added that the company will be producing four to five original movies a year exclusively for the service.

The streaming platform is expected to launch in 2019, and the current plan is for all Disney and Pixar-branded films from 2019 onwards (including Toy Story 4, the Lion King remake and Frozen 2) to appear on this currently-unnamed service.

Iger also confirmed the platform won't have traditional advertising, and said he expects the launch price of the service to be "substantially below" Netflix's to start with because it will have less content.

"The price will reflect that," he said. "Our goal is to attract as many subs as possible starting out."

Alongside its new streaming content, Disney and Lucasfilm also confirmed that Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson has been tapped to make three all-new adventures that move away from the established Skywalker Saga.

"We had the time of our lives collaborating with Lucasfilm and Disney on The Last Jedi," Rian Johnson and his producer Ram Bergman said. "Star Wars is the greatest modern mythology and we feel very lucky to have contributed to it. We can't wait to continue with this new series of films."

Before director Rian Johnson starts his new Star Wars feature film mythology, The Last Jedi is released in UK cinemas on December 14 and US cinemas on December 15.
