Wikinews use cc-by-2.5 and other wikiprojects generally use cc-by-sa-4.0. After a long discussion on Wikinews:Water_cooler/policy#Update_of_license and Wikinews talk:2024 Copyright license upgrade English Wikinews will upgrade to CC-BY-4.0 (without the SA) on December 16, 2024.

However, it has also been said that the best would be if all wikis upgrade. So we made this table of Wikinews so we can try coordinate an update for all Wikinews.

Results all Wikinews projects

Below are a list of all Wikinews with link to known discussions, final result and link to pages that are known to be changed if the Wikinews also upgrade their license.

Generally it will require a configuration change of 'wgRightsUrl' and 'wgRightsText' in phabricator and an edit to MediaWiki:Copyrightwarning, MediaWiki:Copyright-footer (and possible other pages) locally as listed below.

From English Wikinews we suggest that we coordinate the update of phabricator

Each Wikinews have to change all local pages but we will be happy to assist with information about which pages to change and Global Sysops and Stewards can also help.

English Wikinews will upgrade its license to CC-BY-4.0 - will you join us?

English Wikinews has finally completed the discussions about a license upgrade and will upgrade to CC-BY-4.0, effective for all edits made from December 16, 2024. You can read about it at en:Wikinews:2024 Copyright license upgrade.

All Wikinews projects manage their processes internally and independently of English Wikinews, but on English Wikinews, we hope that you will also change your license so we can continue to share articles across the different versions of Wikinews.

Arabic Wikinews already upgraded in August 2024, but they chose CC-BY-SA-4.0 (ShareAlike). We know that other Wikinews projects would also like to change.

To complete the change, each Wikinews project needs to file a request on Phabricator. We made one for English Wikinews at Phab:T381421.

If your wiki have already decided to change the license you can also make a request or we can try to add your wiki to the request so the changes can take place at the same time.

If your wiki have not yet decided it is still possible to change the license. But your wiki needs to have a discussion about it.

To coordinate the license change, we need to know if your wiki has already decided or has an existing vote, so please either leave a message here with a link to the vote/result (and ping me please) or add it directly at en:Wikinews:2024_Copyright_license_upgrade/other-Wikinews#Results_all_Wikinews_projects. Even if the result is that you will not upgrade, we would really appreciate knowing.

Info about suggestion on Meta about change of default license for Wikinews

As written earlier, English Wikinews and some other Wikinews have now changed their license.

I have made a suggestion at m:Requests for comment/Update standard license for Wikinews where I propose changing the default license for Wikinews to ensure all Wikinews have the same license (CC-BY-4.0) unless they actively choose a different license.

It will not affect your wiki because you have already chosen a license.

Vote about a change of license to CC-BY-4.0

As written earlier English Wikinews and some other Wikinews have now changed license. Your wiki have not responded so I hereby start a vote here suggesting that you also update the license to CC-BY-4.0. Please also see m:Requests for comment/Update standard license for Wikinews where I suggest to change the default license for Wikinews to make sure all Wikinews have the same license (CC-BY-4.0) unless they actively chose a different license.

The vote will end on January 20, 2025, with the date of change set for February 1, 2025. All users with more than 100 good edits can vote (talk pages excluded).

A lack of opposition or absence of comments during the polling period is not automatically considered support. Rather, it reflects that participants had their opportunity to express their views. If no objections are raised, the poll will default to a 'proceed' action, assuming no opposition was voiced (per m:Requesting wiki configuration changes).

I will appreciate any help to ensure this vote is announced in the correct places and the text is translated accurately. If there are any errors, please help correct them. If the local policy has different rules than the one I suggest, please correct it as soon as possible.

A little information about the licenses

  • Version 4.0 is more international, more compatible with other licenses and it is more readable compared to version 2.5.
  • It is possible to copy text licensed 2.5 to 4.0 but not the other way around.
  • It is possible to copy text licensed BY to BY-SA but not the other way around.
  • It is no longer possible to translate articles from English Wikinews unless you upgrade to 4.0.
