Death toll of Bahrain tourist boat capsizing rises to 57
At least 57 people are now known to have died when a traditional wooden dhow capsized one mile of the coast of Bahrain in the Persian Gulf. At least 17 were Indian and a further 13 of the dead were British; people of another six nationalities are also known to have died.

NZ Sky TV customers to get refund for satellite failure
On Thursday night, a failure of the Optus B1 satellite affected the Sky Pay TV network and also caused a blackout of other satellite-based systems. Sky TV subscribers will get a refund for the inconvenience. The satellite was down from Thursday evening to Friday morning. It also covers international emergency service and air traffic coordination. However, thanks to backup services, no serious effects were caused.

Sewage spill fouls Waikiki Beach
More than 48 million gallons of untreated sewage that flowed into the ocean from a sewer spill on Friday, March 24, have forced Honolulu city officials to post signs warning tourists on Waikiki Beach to stay out of the water. A 42-inch pressurized sewer line in Waikiki cracked on Friday, March 24, sending untreated sewage into the Ala Wai Canal on the mountain side of Waikiki. Engineers believe that heavy rains since February 19 overwhelmed the sewer line, which was constructed in 1965.

Lethal earthquakes rock western Iran, 70 or more die
At least 51 people are dead and hundreds more injured after three earthquakes and several aftershocks rocked western Iran on Thursday. Some estimates of those injured currently range between 700-870 people.


Judge sentences Ali to 30 years for Bush assassination plot
Ahmed Omar Abu Ali, a 25-year-old U.S. citizen, was sentenced by a U.S. district court judge to 30 years in prison on Tuesday for plotting to assassinate United States President George W. Bush. Ali, a self-proclaimed member of Al Qaeda, was arrested by Saudi officials in 2003 at the Islamic University of Medina. Prosecutors had originally asked for a life sentence, but the judge said that the 30-year sentence was adequate, comparing the case to the "American Taliban" John Lindh.


Rainy weather in Hawaii enters sixth week
Heavy rains have hit the main Hawaiian Islands for nearly six weeks, contributing to flooding in many places in the islands. A series of upper-level storm systems have formed northwest of the island of Kauai, drawing tropical moisture from the south over Hawaii and forming areas of heavy rain and thunderstorms.
