PM Narendra Modi extended his “best wishes” to Karki “on assuming office as the Prime Minister of the Interim Government of Nepal.” In a post on X, he wrote that India remains “firmly committed to the peace, progress and prosperity of the people of Nepal. Karki, 73, is the only woman to have served as Chief Justice of Nepal’s Supreme Court.
Resuming normal operations: Karki taking charge follows violent anti-corruption protests that led to Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s resignation on Sept 9. Nepal’s police force is gradually resuming operations in Kathmandu Valley, with police stations and posts that were vandalised during the protests earlier this week back in operation, officials said Friday. Nepal Police and Armed Police Force personnel have reappeared on streets and around posts across the Valley, the Kathmandu Valley Police Office said. The Supreme Court of Nepal and banks in Kathmandu will reopen in phases after suffering heavy damage during the Gen Z-led protests. Additionally, curfew relaxations allowed markets to reopen briefly, though public transport remains suspended as the army enforces fresh restrictions.

The protests: Leaders of the Gen Z protest groups and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah had already endorsed Karki as chief of the interim government. More than 50 people were killed in clashes with riot police during this week’s mass protests sparked by a ban on social media platforms, reported BBC. The ban was revoked on Monday, but by then demonstrations had already grown into a mass uprising.
