OK, i386 now has ELF, for our W^X work.

The W^X on i386 is not perfect, but it does what we need. 

You *cannot* do a source upgrade.  You must do a binary upgrade.
There might be a source upgrade path later, but for now, there won't
be.

I'd recommend that if you are not very skilled at doing upgrades,
everyone tracking -current hold off for a week or so.
