Sunday sees the biggest football game of the year with the Super Bowl. Between some exciting plays, we get a heap of inventive and expensive ads that tend to rely a little more on celebrity appearances than your average game day commercials. One of the upcoming spots (30-second spots said to cost $7-8 million) for Uber Eats called “A Century of Cravings” sees Oscar-winning actor Matthew McConaughey (“Dallas Buyers Club”) trying to pitch a movie idea to “Barbie” director Greta Gerwig, however, that idea is a conspiracy-theory film set in the world of football.
Unsurprisingly, Gerwig is skeptical about it.
This ad isn’t McConaughey’s first rodeo with Uber Eats as he’s made a few other ads for the company, which also had him waxing on how football exists to sell viewers food, and we assume this was all meant to lead up to his big movie pitch to Gerwig.
Honestly, it’s tough not to get excited by the idea of McConaughey and Gerwig getting together for a project, even if it’s just for a Super Bowl spot. For her part, Gerwig is currently gearing up to help Netflix reboot the “Narnia” franchise as her untitled feature project has entered the casting phase. We’ll keep our fingers crossed that she can convince McConaughey to get involved, perhaps as the stoic voice of Aslan The Lion.
Other celebs in the ad to help with the pitch include Kevin Bacon, “Hot Ones” host Sean Evans tackling a batch of Buffalo Wings, Martha Stewart, and singer Charli XCX. For last year’s Super Bowl ad for the company, he teamed up with Stewart, so it’s nice to see her return.
