Mrs. Russell and Mrs. Astor’s war for societal supremacy is far from over. HBO has renewed The Gilded Age for a third season, TVLine has learned. A release date is not yet known.
The Dec. 16 Season 2 finale saw the long-awaited first kiss between Marian Brook (Louisa Jacobson) and Larry (Harry Richardson), among other interesting developments.
“I think it was always in the background,” series creator Julian Fellowes tells TVLine of that lip lock. “Certainly when the actors were cast, they were cast as a couple who looked compatible on screen if we got there. You can never be too definite, because sometimes performances don’t happen, or things occur, or ideas come in and your original plan isn’t what’s adhered to. But in that instance, I think we always knew they were headed for each other.”
Set in 1880s New York City, The Gilded Age stars Carrie Coon and Morgan Spector as Bertha and George Russell, a “new money” couple battling for supremacy in society and business.
Other key players in their games include Christine Baranski as “old money” socialite Agnes van Rhijn, Cynthia Nixon as Agnes’ sister Ada Brook, Denée Benton as Agnes’ secretary Peggy Scott, Blake Ritson as Agnes’ closeted son Oscar van Rhijn, Taissa Farmiga as the Russells’ daughter Gladys, Kelli O’Hara as Agnes’ other niece Aurora Fane, and Donna Murphy as the all-powerful Caroline Astor.
Additional series regulars include Sullivan Jones as T. Thomas Fortune, Patrick Page as Richard Clay, Simon Jones as Mr. Bannister, Jack Gilpin as Mr. Church, Debra Monk as Mrs. Armstrong, Kristine Nielsen as Mrs. Bauer, Taylor Richardson as Bridget, Ben Ahlers as John “Jack” Treacher, Douglas Sills as Monsieur Baudin, Celia Keenan-Bolger as Mrs. Bruce, Michael Cerveris as Mr. Watson, Erin Wilhelmi as Adelheid and Kelley Curran as Miss Turner.
Now that we know The Gilded Age is returning for a third season, what are your hopes for the show’s future? Drop ’em all in a comment below.
Hooray! I adore this show!
So glad it’s returning!
The best news of the day!
Heck yeah, let’s go.
Literally said out loud, “yes!”
YEAH!!!!
I am very happy this got renewed!! One of my favorite shows!! The actors & actrearthann sses play their parts so very well!
SWEET!!!! Best Christmas news ever!!!
Oh that’s so exciting. We’re just getting to the good parts! I would absolutely love to see Gladys & Jack fall in love. Agnes & Bertha’s heads would explode! Lol!
Noooo, I want to see her marry Billy Carlton and Jack marries Bridget.
I think that’s where they are heading….. to parallel the other rags to riches story of Mrs Winterton.
I just cannot wait to see the new dynamic between Agnes and Ada play out!
When does season three start
Merry Christmas from HBO!
HUZZAH! This is the best series on the TV. It would be a crime if they didn’t renew it. Bring on the predictions:
.
Larry and Marian want to get married against the wishes of Bertha and Agnes. Bertha objects because she has no money of her own and Agnes objects because the Russells’ money is too new.
.
Enid Turner will embarrass her husband in her efforts to pay Bertha back and he will dump her like a hot potato.
.
Jack and Larry will go into business. Jack gets rich and Larry gets richer.
.
Oscar hires the Pinkerton detectives to go after Maude and get his money back.
.
Berth tries to force Gladys to marry the Duke, Gladys says no, Bertha tries to get George to disinherit Gladys if she doesn’t marry the Duke, Gladys reminds George that he promised to only let her to marry a man she loves, George refuses to make Bertha marry the Duke, and all hell breaks loose.
I actually hope Turners husband becomes more of a character and helps her with her schemes. He’s not as dumb as she thinks he is and could be quite an asset for her
Great news!!
I just want Marian to find love on her terms, see more Ada being in charge, and Jack getting hella rich off his clock. Oh and a new gay love for Oscar.
Wow, I was absolutely convinced–and said so here–that it was heading for the guillotine. So happy to have been proven wrong. Now let’s get Sutton Foster to drop in next year.
YES! More of Nathan Lane doing his best Foghorn Leghorn imitation.
Actually, he’s doing Colonel Shuffle. Even the mustache and stinger are the same.
Hahaha, that is so funny and so true!! 😅😅
BEST NEWS EVER!!!
Another ‘winner’ for creator Julian Fellowes. An updated Downton Abbey. I was so involved in the show this past week I actually got mad at Oscar van Rhijn for losing the family fortune. Now, I wonder who will really be the ‘head of the household’ in Season Three.
As for the lip-lock, I saw that coming many episodes ago. Clairvoyant? I think not.
Even if it was borderline, it won an Emmy it’s first year, and it’s Julian Fellowes – it had an edge.
Now how in the heck is Cynthia Nixon going to balance doing TWO SHOWS at the same time again! She had to do it for both first two seasons of THE GILDED AGE and …AND JUST LIKE THAT (Both overlapped) and it look like she’ll have to do it again with both shows likely to have late spring starts!
Oh hell yes! Merry Christmas to us!
YESSSSSS!!!!!!!!
So happy The Gilded Age is returning. The well written plot lines, the perfect cast, the beautiful settings, and the incredible costumes, make it one of the best series I have seen. Looking forward to Season 3. Thanks, HBO
I’m so here for Sir Timex McClocken to make his clock fortune and ride through society because of clocks.
I thought Jack’s last name was Trotter…….
It actually changed in the middle of the series. Was Treacher, now Trotter. I didn’t even notice the change or why it happened.
Excellent. One of my favorite shows of the last few years. Bridgerton, Gilded Age (both shocking because I normally don’t go for either of these), Foundation, Lessons in Chemistry, Wednesday, Strange New Worlds… all really great.
