Together for diversity, freedom and science

More than 60 universities and research institutions concluded their activities on X last week under the motto “Together for diversity, freedom and science“. We follow the initiative and deactivate our X account. Instead, we will be posting on the Twitter successor Bluesky and the Instagram offshoot Threads, in addition to our existing channels. Architectural firm CODE UNIQUE wins contract for fifth extension building

The Dresden-based architectural firm CODE UNIQUE Architekten GmbH has won the contract for the realisation of the German National Library’s fifth annex in Leipzig following an international architecture competition which took place in 2024. The construction work is expected to start at the end of 2026.

Since January 1, 2000, it has been possible to process continuing resources of the Zeitschriftendatenbank (ZDB) online in the library system ILTIS (Integriertes Literatur- und Tonträger-Informationssystem) of the German National Library. Since then, the number of migrated title references has grown from 1 million to over 2.1 million and the 5.5 million holdings have increased almost six-fold. The ZDB is the world's largest database for the identification of serial resources of all kinds and makes its cooperatively created bibliographic data and most of the holdings data available free of charge and free of rights (CC0 1.0).

75 years of Exile Archive: Re-opening of the permanent exhibition

In 2024, the German Exile Archive 1933-1945 of the German National Library celebrates its 75th anniversary. These days it is committed more than ever to its educational founding impulse to counteract anti-Semitism, racism, nationalism and baiting, and to promote democratic values. To mark the anniversary, the expanded permanent exhibition“'Exile. Experience and Testimony“ will reopen in Frankfurt am Main on 5 December. The “exile experience” offered by the exhibition is now even more accessible and immediate, thanks to new content, new perspectives and new approaches.

Restitution of Stolberg-Wernigerode

In October 2024 the German Museum of Books and Writing returned three volumes from the Prince of Stolberg-Wernigerode Library to Prince Philipp of Stolberg-Wernigerode. The books have been on an interesting and exemplary journey over the past decades.

Preserving Cultural Heritage, Shaping the Future" - this is the motto of the "Strategic Compass 2035", published by the German National Library for the second time since 2016. The Compass is fleshed out by the "Strategic Priorities 2025-2027". The Strategic Compass 2035 sets out the broad strategic lines for the next decade. With 13 clearly defined strategic priorities, the German National Library sets specific priorities in order to organise its tasks in an efficient and focused manner.
