Powerful. Brutal. Creative and what every so-called "colonial" or "academia" fantasy ought to be judged by. Pulls very few punches and yet...not nearly so didactic as some more famous books I could name.
Sometimes not an easy read, but worthwhile - it

Not so much mystery as a crime novel.
Was looking forward to it, nominated as it was for an Edgar for best new mystery...
But not the book for me. Bleak, nasty, and sad, and I really, really disliked the ending.

“It isn't always enough, to be right."
Wolf's Cub
Mackay Wood, Wolf's Cub: A Fantasy

“Art is the lie that enables us to realize the truth.”
Pablo Picasso

“Deserves it! I daresay he does. Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. For even the very wise cannot see all ends.”
J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

“The reason that fiction is more interesting than any other form of literature, to those who really like to study people, is that in fiction the author can really tell the truth without humiliating himself.”
Eleanor Roosevelt

“One always has a better book in one's mind than one can manage to get onto paper.”
Michael Cunningham

“People love a happy ending. So every episode, I will explain once again that I don't like people. And then Mal will shoot someone. Someone we like. And their puppy.”
Joss Whedon
